Ireland Women 6 Nations GRAND SLAM

The Irish women won the Women's 6N Grand Slam today with a win over Italy 6-3 in horrific conditions in Milan.

Lynne Cantwell led her might women to victory over a stubborn Italian team with a defensive effort that any team would be proud of. Their superior conditioning and some smart substitutions paid off and they claim the only Grand Slam in the 6N this year!

They also qualify for the World Cup in France in 2015

Old style rugby on an old style field. Muck, steam, sweat, all jerseys going grey and brown.... a tough tough game to withstand yet another Italian onslaught of some serious intent and not a little in the way of dirt conditions skills.

Ireland looked a little too nervous at times (which is obviously to be understood given that a first Grand Slam was on the cards (hello England!! ) and rode their luck on defence a few times (especially a blatant knock forward that was not penalised by the ref.)

But a great win to hold out in a sea of muck. Great Slam and absolutely delighted for them...and US. We needed something to give us a lift and, true to form in recent years, it's our women that are giving us those moments more than the guys. Do I want men to take back the honours. No bloody way. I just want them to join the women in gaining them a little more often
