Barker vs Chavez this summer.. Empty Barker vs Chavez this summer..

Post by Pedro147 Wed 03 Apr 2013, 1:43 pm

Eddie Hearn on Twitter stating that preliminary talks taking place about this fight happening.

Anyone think Barker got a chance or will JCC be too big at the weight?

Is it just me or is Barker rushing things with his injuries? I have a feeling that Barker's body doesn't have too long left in boxing and he knows it so he's trying to get a shot asap before it's too late. I think Barker needs another 2 fights or so and then go for a world title again but maybe his body won't allow it.

I like Barker and I think he has great skills, if Chavez was a middleweight then I would have no problems picking him.

However Chavez looks more like a Cruiserweight and will be far too big...

Chavez by KO.

He'd be 31 when (if) they meet so I think you have to strike when the irons hot, and JCC Jr is the biggest money spinner out of the middleweights. Hopefully its at 160 and not a catch weight that will enable JCC to have an even bigger weight advantage

Barker is solid, but doesn't have the attributes to pull of the victory. He is a good boxer but still gets hit and Chavez can hit

Whether its his lack of speed, size or power you'd imagine that Chavez will he thin into a war and bully him. Barker fades late and Chavez is a good finisher

Chavez does struggle to make 160 though and should he drain himself like he did against Zbik, Rubio, Martinez etc than Barker may just make it interesting. Chavez of late doesn't seem to be able to mount much of a offence and seems to get tired very easily. His punch output seems to be declining with every fight and Barker can outwork him

That's wishful thinking though so I'd go with Chavez KO rounds 7-9

Interesting that chavez gets pulled up for being huge and rehydrating a couple of divisions up but Maythysse gets a pass for doing just that.

Do you mean Rios or Ortiz?

Matthysse regularly between 151-153 lbs which is less than a stone over his weight division which is the norm for pro's these days

Nice attempt at stirring there, Az!

Anyway, Chavez-Barker is an interesting one. Julio Jr doesn't like pure boxers and Barker is a technician not to be sniffed at. However, he doesn't hit hard enough to discourage or really hurt Chavez, and is going to have to be on his bike all night, I think. Barker does, to me at least, seem a little 'lightweight' at 160 and, though I think he'll bag a lot of the early rounds, I see Chavez getting hold of him more and more as the fight wears on and I think Barker will run out of steam.

Chavez doesn't throw all that much in comparison to a lot of Middleweights, but non-stop pressure isn't really Barker's game either and I doubt he's going to reinvent himself in that regard now.

Chavez by stoppage in the final quarter of the fight.

Chavez is still a monster at the weight, and if the Martinez beating hasn't taken too much out of him I see him being a lot for Barker to take. That said, Barker is a far classier boxer and would win several rounds before possibly being worn down late

See this one being very similar to the Andy Lee fight.

I was thinking that too, but Lee is too easy to drag into a tear up whereas Barker is more likely to tie up or try to slide away instead of trade. The body shots will wear him down though like he did lee although it'll take longer

Lee's jab was a real nuisance for Chavez and Barker will need to do the same and make sure he throws the right hard enough to at least halt Chavez for him to have may chance

Maybe not Mathysse, but several boxers rehydrate to ridiculous levels making them a division above their opponent. The don't get the flack JCC seems to cop. Hatton was one of them if memory serves me right.

Broner seemed to get a free pass too. He walks around about 155lb.

Yet going down t0 130/135 to fight the likes of Gavin Rees.

Hope Chavez Jr gets shown up AGAIN

Eddie Hearn sending another fighter abroad to take a beating.

I suppose Matchroom have to have some way of culling their growing stable.

Barker just isn't tough enough in my view. I think he is a pretty tough guy, but to survive the onslaught that would start to happen midrounds to him the pressure of Chavez Jr. would get to him in my view. doesn't hold enough power to keep him off him. think he would have a bright start against him, but fade off and tire in the same kind of way Andy Lee did like someone else said. Perhaps do a bit better than Lee though, slightly more elusive.

Think he has a slight chance against Chavez to be honest, don't think it would be a "beating" he's the underdog for sure though. If not now, when with Barker, don't think his body can last a couple more years to be honest.

this is not a case of sending a sheep to the slaughter, barker is towards the end of his career, he has recently lost a title shot, and due to injuries hasnt really been active enough to really create a big following, and this fight is probably undeserved as he doesnt really have a great CV either. however he does possess decent boxing skill, and chavez's only real advantage is size/power. this to me a perfect match making, and will be a real boost to barkers retirement fund, espeically if he wins and gets another 2-3 big fights of the back of it.

losing isn't the be all and end all for every fighter, and rapping up boxers in cotton wool wins nobody any fans

I actually agree Eddy, he's proven he belongs at world level against Martinez and that he isn't a mug that can't fight there. Still think he may just not quite be strong enough to compete with Chavez going down the stretch but I don't see this quite as like chucking rees in with Broner, to which he had no chance, he has some form of a chance of winning this one.

especially as chavez can take 5-6 rounds to get going sometimes, and where else would barker go for a shot a the big time?

Its a pay day nothing else.

Why send a fighter abroad as the big underdog when there is no belt on the line?

Hearn wants a pay day. Barker is the cannon fodder.

A win over Chavez means a guarenteed world title shot pretty much, it's a good payday for Barker and a massive opportunity to fight on HBO again if he does well but loses. He had that opportunity after he lost to Martinez was it not for injuries.

You do know that Chavez Jr wants the fight in Mexico?

The only way Barker walks out of there with a win is if he gets Carl Froch to impersonate him.

I think its good fight for Barker. Sure he will start as underdog but its a great opportunity for him to mark himself as one of the top guys in the division. I dont think its a sacrificial lamb fight at all. I expect Barker to be competitive even if he does lose.

In fairness to Sergio, he's the reigning champ coming off an exciting, high profile win. Nothing wrong with a homecoming.

I don't see anything wrong with the Chavez fight being in Mexico. That's where the tickets are.

that would set him up with another big money rematch, if barker was to miss out on this oppertunity i fail to see where he would be able to push his career, ive always though barker managed to get far on limited skill, he has shown a little more than i though he had but still has a fragile, accident waiting to happen air about him, in my humble opinion

He might be Mexican but I've got no time for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

I like Darren Barker. He has a good boxing brain and a good skill set.

I can't see Barker winning but would love it if he did.

Chavez Jr is just living off Julio Snr's name.

Chavez to win by a late stoppage for me. I'd imagine a similar fight to the martinez one.

Barker's a funny one, above european level but not quite world class. His best options would be fighting either murray or macklin but for all three of them there is more money in fighting for a world strap even if they are not quite there.
