Kell Brook to move to 154?

By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook’s time as a welterweight could be nearing the end. His next fight against Carson Jones (35-9-3, 25 KO’s) on July 13th will be taking place at a catch-weight of 150 lbs, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.
Brook had problems training because of his injured foot that he sustained while trying to get ready for a bout against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander. That fight never happened because of Brook’s foot injury.
Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn said to ESPN “I don’t want to put too much pressure on him to make the fight and he was restricted early in camp because of [his] foot; can see a move to 154 soon.”


Hearn tried to get the catch-weight of 150 changed to 152, but the Jones’ team said no to that. Jones isn’t a huge welterweight and it would have been asking a lot of him to fight at that weight.
Brook better enjoy his time at welterweight while he still can because if you put in with junior middleweights, I think he’s going to have problems. I can’t picture Brook being able to hang with the likes of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Austin Trout or even Sergiy Rabchenko.
Brook took a beating against the smallish Carson Jones last year in July. Can you imagine what would happen if Brook were fighting bigger, stronger and more talented fighters at 154? It would be a slaughter.
Brook dishes out the punishment okay, but when it came to him getting tagged back by these guys, it would be brutal and I couldn’t see him lasting more than five or six rounds tops.
Brook’s problem is he’s been matched so incredibly softly during his 9 years as a pro. It would be just too much for him if Hearn suddenly threw him in the ring with a good junior middleweight or even a good welterweight for that matter.
I’m not even sure if Brook’s feet or ankles would hold up under a training camp for a fight against someone at this point. I’m still wondering if Brook will be able to make it out of his training camp for Carson Jones without doing down with a fight-postponing foot or ankle injury.


What are peoples thoughts?

Canelo and Rabchenko both stop Brook late in my opinion. He isn't a huge Welterweight and hasn't proven he can mix it anywhere near the top level yet so a move up could be very damaging.

He hasn't even achieved anything at 147???!!

Excuses excuses excuses, bored of this under-achieving dullard now.

I wonder when the LMW super quarter final semi super IBF final eliminator will be held against a top 40 ranked opponent

Lots of winnable fights at 147, and lots of big money fights too. He must be really struggling at the weight. 

I hope he stays injury free for the next year or two, so we can finally see how far he can go. Hes spent a decade as a prospect.

Maybe they've offered him a crack at the winner of Ishe Smith/Carlos Molina.

Scott Gilfoid is a plank.

He's fought garbage so far in his career, he badly needs a run of credible opponents.

I know injury is partly to blame and there can be no one more frustrated than him, but he needs to kick on now and start boxing some names, and frankly, depending on severity he might have to just fight through a few injuries.

Just kidding. I haven't boxed in 3 months. I'm walking around at middle/super middle. He doesn't need to worry.

Whatever frustrations most of us have over brook's career, I wouldn't suggest that a move to 154 means he'll suddenly get overwhelmed by the bigger guys. If weights been a problem, he'll be stronger himself. I also thought he showed plenty of heart against jones when he gassed. And that's the big question mark over brook, will he have the staying power against a top operator at either welter or light middle. 

If he'd bothered fighting one, we'd know of course.

Disagree milky...........He doesn't have the greatest power at 147..should he move up he'll be disadvantaged greatly in my opinion.

Rumous have always abounded about Brook loving the beer a bit too much and not loving training enough, and though he has the excuse of injuries for now, you have to wonder if his weight troubles are down to those factors as much as anything else. He put his poor second half showing against Jones last summer down to the fact that he'd cut corners in the gym and left himself with a bit too much to do in getting down to 147, but vowed not to make those same mistakes again. After the Saldivia fight he chalked his improved performance and confidence down to harder training and improved weight making, saying he made the Welter limit a lot easier that time.

Which is why I find it a wee bit strange that he's apparently looking at moving up now. Saldivia was his last fight and in that space of time you shouldn't really be going from making the weight reasonably comfortably to completely outgrowing the division. Given his injuries, I can understand having the Jones rematch at 150, but surely that should only be a short-term solution before he returns to 147 full-time once he's got a clean bill of health? I mean, Brook's not a small Welterweight, but he shouldn't really be bursting at the seams weighing in at 147 lb either, you wouldn't think.

I've made no secret of how talented I think Brook is and that I feel he could still potentially go a long way, but I'd feel more optimistic about him proving me right at Welterweight rather than Light-Middle where his one-paced approach and lack of big knockout power may hinder him a bit more.

Despite the usual insightful commentary to the contrary, the saldivia fight proved nothing about brook's conditioning - it was over way too early.

His conditioning is the big question mark over him, and if weight problems are down to big time charlieness not natural age/growth then it's not a good sign.

baffling decision, i can't see him ever becoming a world champion I just don't think he wants it enough

I really thought Kell Brook was going to go a long way but the guy seems to be going backwards. 8 years he has been a pro now and I really thought he was going to mix it with the best as he had the talent to do it. I thought it was Warrens fault but since being at Matchroom either his ambition or lifestyle still seems to be holding him back

Ambition doesn't seem to be holding Cleverly back.....He's still a huge name on boxnation..

Brook has more boxing talent than Cleverly hence its more frustrating to watch him waste it away

But this thread isnt about Cleverly anyway so I dont see the relevance...

Brook ended up in court a few years ago after an altercation at a nightclub. He's attended a nightclub at least once.

His opponent there was probably better than half the guys on his record.

Have to say I have zero interest in Kell Brook. He always seems to be making an awful lot of noise about nothing.
