The Portugal midfielder was Manchester City’s player of the year in 2019 but only started 23 Premier League games last term and now appears behind Phil Foden in the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.

Barca have made him one of their summer targets and will make an offer including players in a swap deal, with City long-term admirers of right-back Nelson Semedo among those available for trading.

AC Milan are plotting another move for Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira, who could be allowed to leave the club as part of their summer rebuild under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey and also want to keep Dani Ceballos, on loan from Real Madrid last season, at the club.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been told by Arsenal that he will be made available for transfer this summer. Maitland-Niles, 22, has been the subject of enquiries from Everton and Brighton and Hove Albion and is valued at upwards of £20 million.

In addition, the club would like to move on a number of squad players, Sokratis, Lucas Torreira, Sead Kolasinac and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who has been on loan this season. Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding are also available. Ideally Arsenal would sell Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi – both excluded by Arteta – although those deals present problems.

If Chilwell is £50m it seems fine, if he is Maguire pricing then it is more dubious. Given how much has been spent on Luis, Rahman, Emerson, Alonso trying to replace Cole then £50m for 8-10 years of Chilwell would be fine.

Sarr will probably never play a minute for Chelsea, which is classic Chelsea really - see Matt Miazaga and Papy Djliboudi. And a 36 year old defender who has never played in the PL being asked to play in Chelsea’s wide open defence...
