Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
First topic message reminder :
I mean are we even sure Gordon isn't a one year wonder who never stuck around for his drop off season.
A lot of hype for a guy who's had more near comebacks than games played in years

A 10 year contract is rather bold in a league where injuries are so common. However, if there is one player that merits the big money and being tied to your team for that long, it's Mahomes - two seasons as a starter and already league MVP in one and a Superbowl win in the other.

Reports that today will be the last day for the Washington Redskins. Momentum seems to be behind Redwolves as the new name, but nothing confirmed yet.

It’s no more ridiculous than Texans or Browns - they’d be ridiculed if they were suggested on Twitter these days.

Jags have traded away Ngakoue and released Fournette. Remember when they nearly went to the Superbowl and looked set to be a top team?

If you thought backup QB was a sweet job before; thanks to the COVID rules Josh McCown is now theoretically on the Eagles' practice squad, but is actually geting paid a five-figure sum every week to sit at home unless a QB gets injured.

Can’t think of a worse weekend for injuries in a long, long time. Absolutely brutal.
Bosa, Barkley, Sutton all done for the year.
CMC out for 6 weeks. Jimmy G and Drew Lock injured too. Carnage.

So the first match has been postponed... interesting to see how this goes, if the Vikes also have any issues, given the small size of the NFL season

Texans have cleared house: GM, HC and the just recently appointed offensive play caller all gone. Yes; Bill O'Brien has somehow been fired.

I don’t think he’s a terrible coach to be fair. And the schedule was brutal this year for them. But when you make the huge calls like he did, you are putting your head on the chopping block.

Re: Ongoing NFL Discussion Thread V
Obviously he was a horrible GM, one of the worst we’ve seen, but agree with JDizzle in that I don’t think he’s a bad coach. Like an offensive equivalent of Marvin Lewis, not really good enough to get you over the hump in the playoffs but will have you there or thereabouts
From a wider organisation standpoint - absolutely barmy they gave him all this power, allowed him to do what he’s done as a GM in the last 12 months, and then fire him so soon after the offseason. If he was on a short leash, why on earth are you allowing him to decide to trade away all your picks and your best player?

Pats vs Broncos has been postponed, Bills vs Titans has provisionally been moved to Tuesday. Wheels haven't come off the season quite yet, but they're looking pretty loose...

I think it's a matter of time before the NFL season gets stopped. Covid is far from being under control in the US and they just don't have the control that the NBA has.

Falcons get in on the HC/GM search. Quinn had to go, but it seems a little harsh on Dimitroff to me.

Lacking what? There's plenty of talent there. Maybe they didn't trust him with the new hire, maybe they just wanted a complete fresh start, but I think it's going to be harder for them to find a clear upgrade than it will be for another franchise to clearly upgrade by bringing him in.

Do they have any defensive players outside of Grady Jarrett who are actually good? I tend to agree with GSC, Dimitroff did stellar work half a decade ago but he’s struggled as much as Quinn since the super bowl

Watched the WFT v Cowboys game and couldn't help thinking if the D, OL and RB's had been playing like that since week 1, we'd be a damn sight better than 4-7! Still need a QB though (Smith has done a good job overall but he's not the future, though neither is Haskins).

Lions have fired Patricia and their GM Bob Quinn. What's Jim Caldwell up to these days?
Also, what exactly is the point of teams firing their coaches mid-season if none of them ever seem to start interviewing people until everyone else does?

Research and gauging interest. You can't interview coaches in work until the season finishes

Not sure you need to have an opening to research, and I'm not really sure what gauging interest means in practice. The only difference going early makes is that the interim might win a few games and get the job.GSC wrote:Research and gauging interest. You can't interview coaches in work until the season finishes
And are there no potential candidates out there that aren't currently employed by NFL franchises?
In more COVID news, the 49ers are looking for somewhere else to play and practice because of a new local lockdown.

Some notable weird net points teams after 13 games:
- 10-3 Bills +38
- 6-7 WFT +12
- 4-9 Falcons +6
- 9-4 Browns -20
- 7-6 Raiders -41
Jets are -210, and the only team not to score 200 points yet.

Gase, Lynn and Marrone fired on Black Monday. John Elway has somehow craftily promoted himself out of the GM role in Denver.

I'm guessing Rivers and Roethlisberger will retire, although I could see Big Ben changing his mind before training camp. Would be weird without them.

Big Ben has the highest cap hit in the entire league next season ($41m, $22m dead cap even if he retires) - kind of think Pittsburgh are stuck with him for another year.
Know I'm a Brady #fan, but it really is ridiculous what he's doing and how good his arm is, at the age of 43 when Brees and Ben can barely get the ball 10 yards downfield with velocity anymore

Brady is playing out of his skin right now. Saturday night was Godwin's worst game so far as a Buccaneer and Evans was injured. Just watch some of the throws he makes in that game.
I honestly used to wonder whether his titles were down to Trump's favourite coach, but it's looking more like it was the other way around.

Was a good weekend of action I thought, bar the Bears and Trubisky still being in our lives. Think Green Bay had to be delighted sitting at home watching their NFC counterparts though...Rams look dangerous but if Donald is hurt and Goff clearly nowhere near 100%, they've only really got a punchers chance. Bucs *could* do it, but they seem to have declined on D the second half of the season, would you say Pr4wn?

Devin White being out for us over the last two games has been massive. Kevin Minter is nowhere near as good. White will be back for the Saints game.
With that being said, New Orleans has completely owned us this season, so I think they should win handily.

Browns could beat KC if the running backs have another game like that. The score at the end of the first quarter could be key, if KC start fast then I don’t think the Browns have the game to catch them, if the Browns get a lead and can start controlling the clock they have a chance
