Anyone on any news or current affairs program right now who thinks it's either cool, or in some way projecting how intellectual they are, to be on Zoom/Teams while in front of their book shelves/library.
Sod off - no-one is impressed.

Yes, it's even worse when you see multiple copies of their own book seemingly randomly placed behind them. Oh, the self assured hubris!
One journalist-type here has the worst bookshelf I've ever seen. It's sort of on an angle and tapered towards the top so he can only fit one or two books up there. To me his political views are about as uneasy on the ear as his taste for bookshelves is uneasy on the eye.
I wish the whole damn thing would collapse on his puffy pseudo-intellectual head. That would make great viewing.

Just for laughs, someone should be on a televised Zoom meeting in front of, say, ten years worth of Penthouse, or something similar.Pal Joey wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:Anyone on any news or current affairs program right now who thinks it's either cool, or in some way projecting how intellectual they are, to be on Zoom/Teams while in front of their book shelves/library.

Now, this is going to pee some of you off and I don't wish the guy himself any additional ill at all, but:
Is it cuz he is special?
- Why did anyone think it reasonable for centenarian Captain Sir Tom Moore to have a holiday in Barbados in December as the pandemic was ramping up again?; and
- Why are his family allowed to visit him in hospital, when for the majority of relatives who have hospitalised family members suffering from Covid just now, that's verboten?
Is it cuz he is special?

It's been fairly clear that his family have been monetizing him for the past few months. Suspect the holiday to Barbados wasn't his idea but it would have been bad form for them not to take him.

Is it just me, or does anyone else thing the continual headlines re. this private venture deep water submersible that's missing near the wreck of the Titanic is just a teeny bit annoying?
Apologies, but it's four insanely wealthy individuals, going on a glory/vanity ride (to, let's not forget, a grave site), that's known to be risky, plus one expert ex-military French diver.
I don't wish them ill, per se, but aren't there more important things going on?

My grandmother said pretty much the same thing.
I think the media like it because rich people are interesting (in their eyes), and the whole 'x hours of oxygen left' gives it some film-type drama, as though James Bond is going to swoop down with 20 minutes left to save them.

I recall the coverage of when the Russian submarine Kursk sank, and that certainly generated plenty of headlines for a few days, although probably less than this.
It does feel a bit over the top to me that it's been basically the main story for 3 days, vying with the equally unimportant BoJo sanctioning vote (he quit, so it's all a bit irrelevant)

I don't disagree I have some interest, but continual headlines? Come on. I get the "will they make it?!?!?" interest (they won't), but IMO this does not merit the attention being spaffed on it.Soul Requiem wrote:I find such events to be quite compelling and I don't see why aside from envy it matters that they're rich.
My point about them being rich is that this is a vanity jaunt - can't take a joke, shouldn't have joined. That sort of thing. It's not some essential submarine pipeline maintenance that's gone awry, or Thai kids trapped in a cave system, or even the Kursk whose submariners were doing their jobs.

Re: That really grinds my gears thread
This morning on the news homepage of the BBC international website there were no fewer than 12 separate articles on this incident, including a rolling live news page, with BBC reporters having been flown out especially to report from the coast of Newfoundland where the submarine went missing. Now it seems to me that this reporting, like the submarine, has gone just a bit overboard.

Well yes , media coverage is a bit OTT ; but it really doesn't bother me. That's the way newspapers and their modern replacements work , isn't it ?
Suppose it depends a bit on what else is happening around the world too. If there had been a major development in Ukraine it mightn't be getting quite such focus.
Happens at all levels doesn't it ? On a really quiet day an old village newspaper might have made a fuss about a cat stuck up a tree ...

Moving onto something else, what gets me is the ridiculous coverage and seeming influence the pro trans agenda gets.
I'll state for record I'm a male, hetrosexual and I'm married to a woman. Not sure if I'm required to define the term but hopefully most know anyway.
I'll also say everyone is free to do what they want, if you want to identify as a man or woman or piece of garden furniture carry on.
What I do object to is the kowtowing by companies, govt, media etc to a tiny tiny percentage of population who this affects.
Add in the utterly ridiculous "no platforming" the trans lobby adopt to prevent anyone even discussing subjects such as keeping single sex changing areas and toilets etc.
The horrendous personal attacks and threats to likes of Kathleen Stock are crazy and it appears anyone with a public voice is afraid to say anything in case they get similar.
Free speech? That's gone by the wayside even in the most reserved of forms by them.
Right, flame away!

24 hour nes broadcasts and the web probably contribute significantly - can't just report the sub beng missing, there being a search and whatever the resolution - has to be updated regularly so that people keep coming back and looking.alfie wrote:Well yes , media coverage is a bit OTT ; but it really doesn't bother me. A lot of people see any attempt at a discussion on trans rights as an attack on trans people as a whole and somehow challenging their existence. Don't get me wrong there are a whole lot of bigots out there, but there are also some reasonable discussions to be had, particularly around trans athletes in womens sports. Also the whole "gender vs sex" thing needs to be explained a lot more to a lot of people.

If adults and companies find the trans issue confusing imagine what it is like for the growing child. Many are led to believe they are something that they are not and with the medical profession getting involved with hormone therapy and surgery many of the decisions a child / young adult makes will affect them for the rest of their lives.

Dont think any are opposed to trans rights but all get themselves tied up in knots trying to not offend anyone by for example defining what a woman is (an adult human female).
It's ridiculous, likes of Starmer knows what the answer is but he wouldn't say it. That's the sort of nonsense that annoys me.

A bunch a trans folk stormed the NSW Parliament today trying to interrupt a Women's Forum being held there.
The topic of discussion was "Why can't women talk about sex?"
Not sure what all the anger was about - it's all a bit beyond me - but it was quite a pathetic protest.
A more burly female security guard frog-marched them all out (about 3 of them) and got squealed at.
Honestly, don't we all need a break from this nonsense?

Regarding the missing sub story: apart from seeing all the headlines and images on the BBC website I have not read or listened to anything. However, elsewhere the following youtube video was recommended and it very quickly explains what is known and describes the nature of the submarine ("experimental") and the company*** that gives an idea of what very likely happened. The tourists had to sign a waiver before going that included they could die and the company would not be responsible for their deaths.
***Cost cutting and "modern" that includes the CEO saying he didn't want to hire any ex-military 50 year old white guys.
ps: Recent findings indicate the carbon-fibre structure failed on descent.

Doesn't matter what the waiver said, you can't contract out of liability for death and injury caused by your negligence.

Yeah those waivers are barely worth the paper they’re written on.
On the plus side for the 5 folk, they would have been dead before the realised something was wrong. Wouldnt have been pretty, but definitely quick and painless. Thats definitely better than freezing or suffocating.

Imagine 99.9% of Trans people must have felt terrible alienation.....and most I imagine want to be left alone to get on with the rest of their lives and good luck to them......But Bigots are determined to not let them.....Citing a few demonstrators or maybe a couple who have made the transition to Women that want to play in female sport...
Disgusting and JK Rowling who has 800m she could use to promote good things spends her time on a war with a minority of people who just want some happiness for once in their lives...
It's pathetic..

Wrong.
All Rowling did was say that people who menstruate are women which is entirely correct.
I've seen to see any evidence that a man who identifies as a women can actually do that but if you know different say so.

She didn't start any war, the nutty trans lot did.
Rowling is a rabble rouser.......Most of the Harry Potter cast hate her over her stance and rightly so..
Don't be a bigot like Rowling.....Find something more positive to believe in.....Like Manchester City..
That's either some elite-level ignorance or some entry-level wumming.
It's just one tweet as I outlined..and if it was directed at Jews or Muslims it would be a problem..
Now sling it you one line bore..

You mean belittling stuff like..."There used to be a name for these "kind of People"....Woomuds, Wumbens....Wimp-unds"....Pretty poor stuff and as it is directed at a certain minority can be and should be construed as bigotry.....
There is more but I will let you tell me what it was that Diane Abbott said that was antisemitic first..
Wow, that's pretty dim, Truss. She was literally referring to women in general. Not trans people.
Rowling commented: “’People who menstruate’. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
To break it down simply for you, Rowling didn't like the turn of phrase 'people who menstruate'. She feels a person should just write 'women' as opposed to 'people who menstruate'.
It has been answered multiple times what Diane Abbott said that was anti-Semitic. You can't answer what JK Rowling said that was bigoted; this is unsurprising as no one can.

There is more evidence of bigotry in my JK post than in the Diane Abbott letter...
Unless you're a right wing hypocrite....
I'd never call anyone that..

I fail to see how it's bigotry to prefer the term 'women' to 'people who menstruate'.
Judging by your initial post, you didn't even understand Rowling's point. Which minority is it directed at, out of interest?

No there isn't. There'a zero evidence and you're doing your usual of not engaging with the detail when it's presented to you.

All Rowling did was say that people who menstruate are women which is entirely correct.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Rowling said in the slightest, if you're offended by a woman referring to women as women then there really is no hope for you. So what if the cast of the films want nothing to do with her, are they arbiters of society now?

Likes of Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson just sh*t scared they'll get cancelled or be subject to a social media pile on.
There's so much utter utter sh*te about this. Of course transgender people(am I allowed to say they are people or is that wrong term these days?) deserve respect and space etc but it appears some of the more radical transgender lobby want everything at exclusion of the vast majority of rest of population and when anyone questions them in even the most respectful way they blow a fuse.
