Jannik Sinner gets Stan Wawrinka in R1.
Andy Murray drawn in same section as Sinner/Wawrinka. Murray gets Duckworth in R1.
Murray could face Sinner in R3 and Alcaraz is a potential R4 opponent.

Rafael Nadal Wimbledon:
2006-2011: Winner x 2, Runner up x 2, absent x 1
2012-2017: 4R x 2, 2R x 2, 1R x 1, absent x 1
2018-2019: SF x 2:  lost in marathon 5 setter to Djokovic & lost to Federer (who narrowly lost to Djokovic in the final).
2020 .......: No Wimbledon
2021 .......: absent

If Nadal plays like he did in 2018 and 2019 then he must have a chance for the title assuming his body doesn't fall apart.

Seems like I missed it at the time but Andy Murray could face big John Isner in R2. I highly doubt anyone enjoys facing the serve bot on grass.

Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the final of ATP 250 grass event in Mallorca. He will face Spanish Roberto Bautista-Agut in the final. I use the term grass court very loosely, the court looks terrible and almost like dirt.

Tsitsipas beats RBA 6-4 3-6 7-6. Tsitsipas’ first title on grass. The Greek made hard work off it. He was a break up in the second set. He served for the title in the third. Eventually taking the tie break easily.

Kvitova overcame defending champ Ostapenko in Eastbourne and must be considered a contender for Wimbledon.

Saw some of the final and Petra looked something like back to her best.

Difficult to know what to make of Wimbledon this year as it's a "pointless" tournament. Plenty of money at stake, of course, as well as glory.

You can't help feeling sorry in advance for, say, the finalists and the semi finalists who will have got nearly all the way and will have nothing to show for it in terms of improved rankings.

Yeah I really don't like the "no points" decision. I know opinions may differ over the Wimbledon Russia ban - and sure , it is rough on some individuals ; though not as rough as the damn war is on the poor Ukraine people : but surely it is the right of the hosts to make a rule just as they all did over vaccinations ?
Taking points out of the event penalises all players ; and to what end ? Didn't change anything ; just makes the rankings basically nonsense until it all washes out...

This has been explained and discussed previously.   The tournament goes ahead but will not form part of the ATP nor WTA tours for this year because the tournament did not satisfy the ATP and WTA rulings on the Ukraine issue - individuals able to compete as individuals but not representing Russia nor Bellarussia - hence all Russian and Bellarussian flags have been removed from the ATP and WTA website and in all draws in which the tournament forms part of the ATP & WTA tours.  Once sport is politicized then there will be arguments such as banning NATO countries for the destruction and impoverishment of civilians in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan etc.

Both Murray and Emma R will be in action on the first day of Wimbledon.

Murray has the early-evening slot which suits the BBC who can endlessly annoy viewers, particularly those recording matches, by constantly switching from BBC1 to BBC2.

I think this is the best chance for Rafael Nadal to win at Wimbledon for a long time. Not sure about Djokovic nor Alcaraz but expect them to meet in the QF. Tsitsipas is poor on grass but won his first grass tournament yesterday - the ATP250 in Mallorca. Berrettini should go through the draw fairly comfortably until he meets someone with a good return and variation. It would be quite a story if at the end of two weeks Nadal is holding three current grand slam trophies.

Can’t see Nadal winning Wimbledon tbh. His key weakness on grass, since his prime when he made those 5 finals, is the defensive back hand slice just isn’t as good on grass as it is on clay or HC.
FAA somewhat exposed this in the exhibition match the played a few days ago.

I forgot above FAA. Since Toni Nadal was added to his coaching team he has been quite impressive and consistent. It will be interesting to see how far he gets at Wimbledon. Last year he reached the QF (beaten by Berrettini in 4 sets) and this year he is drawn to meet Nadal in the QF.

Not sure Andy would mind that draw too much - he's still one of the finest returners in the game and it is likely to be a match dominated by short points. The battle playing against the likes of Isner is more mental than physical, in taking the rare opportunities to break serve or win the tie breaks. Murray has an 8-0 H2H advantage and has only lost 5 sets to Isner in his career, 4 in tie breaks, so suggests it's a match up that Andy doesn't have that many difficulties with historically (although noting they haven't played since 2016).

Well, they managed around 30-40 mins at Wimbledon before the forecast rain arrived.

Time for Norrie to bagel Andujar in the first set, although the veteran Spaniard has got an early break in the second.

At least once we get to 1.30pm we're guaranteed tennis thanks to Centre and No 1's roofs.

Carlitos Alcaraz beats Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6 7-5 4-6 7-6 6-4 in a marathon 4hr+ opening round contest. Alcaraz did well to recover from 2 sets to 1 down as the German was really playing well.

Alcaraz looked down and out at 2-0 down in the 4th set tiebreak but a terrific shot got it back on serve and he went on to win the set and then the match.

Don't know if anyone's kept the stats for thiis, but I reckon Andy must have played more under the Centre Court roof than pretty much anyone else.

I wonder if Andy can keep going long enough to get to 200 wins in Grand Slam tournament matches. Yesterday saw him chalk up win 194 with 50 losses.

An improving sort of a performance for Andy and next up is big John Isner.

Six more now would give him the title Smile Wouldn't that be nice ?

I do hope he can go deep this week. But Isner will be tough next up. Andy has had problems stringing wins together - naturally enough given his age and injury issues ; but hopefully that hip continues to be easier to manage and he can get a few more successes in front of his home crowd.

When are you going to pop back on to the cricket board , Craig ? Have missed you on there for a while - we don't bite , really...

Well Berrettini's challenge is over very early : Covid sees him withdrawn ; which is rotten luck - whatever one thought of his chances - in a season in which he's been in such good form.

I am sure he can get those six to reach the 200 mark but that won't be this fortnight. It may be that it comes about at the Australian Open 2023.

As for cricket board I enjoyed posting projected scores for the day etc but it was clear those posts were not welcomed by the masses. Best let you all discuss the tests in the way they want it discussed.

While not his biggest fan, that's definitely bad news for the tournament, as he's one of the very few players whose game really suits the grass.
