Rafa's Defense Looms Empty Rafa's Defense Looms

A week from now, the first day's play of the 2011 US Open will be drawing to a close. As the defending champion, Nadal's form and fitness at this point looks rather dubious. However, as we know, he is the quality of player who is going to give his best each and every time. Hopefully his burned fingers will not be an issue, however the damage to his psyche will not so easily be dislodged. He's going to need some luck on the draw, and probably in a match or two - though this is a fact for most Major winners, at one time or another.

Djokovic seems at this point to be the continuing "Man," though much will depend on how serious the shoulder is. Federer could just as easily continue his downwards trend, as play the tennis of his "life," and come to the good to lift the title.

Murray, well, as always in with a good chance, but one wonders how much longer he can go without winning a Major singles title, but still "really believe" in his heart of hearts, that he "belongs," and can do so.

For different reasons, the Men's singles seems to be as ponderous at the Women's at this point. Going to be some interesting tennis over that fortnight, and it's just as likely to bring up some new questions, as likely answer some of those already being posed.

"Have to put my hard earned money" picks, at this stage: Serena & Nadal!
