Surrey V Leics CC
First topic message reminder :
The full Surrey squad to play Leicestershire at Grace Road in the LV= County Championship is:
Rory Hamilton-Brown (Captain)
Steven Davies (Wicket Keeper)
Mark Ramprakash
Zander de Bruyn
Tom Maynard
Jason Roy
Zafar Ansari
Gareth Batty
Chris Jordan
Pragyan Ojha
Stuart Meaker
Tim Linley
Matthew Dunn
Dunn and the Gaffer miss out
New signing Ojha goes straight into the team (not that I even knew we'd signed him!)
Leics win the toss and bat first

Viscount 36.2-10-79-9
River 34-6-102-0
I suppose Dernbach (or even Tremlett!) will be back for the next CC match, but Clive has got to have moved up one rung on the ladder now!

Similarities with the game at Derbys.
A sixfer for the Viscount and Hyphen going like a train (or, should I say, JimBob) in the second innings for winning runs.
Hope to see all - including Mrs Gooner - in the officers' mess for celebratory drinks on the Corporal
Perhaps, Chichester, you could give a quick demonstration of Subbuteo Cricket and Owzat!

That said, the lead obtained and the second innings wickets taken by Viscount (54 and still counting) and Nora should be enough to get us a win tomorrow if only the weather holds ....
I'll put any self modesty aside to celebrate - for once - a correct prediction and another victory!

A second sixfer of the season for the Viscount (59 CC wickets and still counting) to set up victory. Tremendous!

Great batting by Davies and, in particular, Hyphen to get us over the line in double quick time tonight before Leicester is hit by monsoons tomorrow. So good to see Davies back in the runs - almost 150 for him in this match for once out.
A decent debut by Ojha - 4 match wickets at 12 each - if not particularly challenging given the poor opposition. He and the Viscount were in fact the only Surrey bowlers to take more than two wickets in the whole match. That could be concerning, particularly against better opposition. Jordan certainly appears some way off the required mark.
Anyway, we can only knock over who is in front of us and overall we certainly did that today. A fine win - if as much against the weather as Leics. Well done!
Now for a bit of

Re: Surrey V Leics CC
Fantastic win today, especially so as the Viscount had had absolutely no seam bowler back up in the match apart from Brain in the first morning! Ohja seemed very economical and picked up a few wickets but where would be without out Tim eh? Today also showed the benefit of having Hyphen open the innings, he's like our own Sehwag I suppose, don't think someone like Harinath would have got the runs in time!
Incidentally, the Hyphen now has over 900 runs at 41.00 this season which is certainly an improvement on his previous form. I think he will remain an opener for the long term at Surrey in all forms and I hope he will continue to improve and do a great job for us.

Evening all - take your pick.....
Realistically short of some highly selective weather intervention we - or Gloucs - can forget about overtaking Middlesex as they have to play Leics twice.
Pleased to see Jimbob sufficiently recovered to join us
Astonishing performance and consistency from the Viscount. I assume the bookies are already paying up on Surrey player of the season.
Well played Hyphen, too. Probably feels a lot better than he did after his horrendous run out against Warks (highlights on Surrey website)
I see the ads are now appearing on this site - appropriately including a door company in Croydon!

Not as much as one might think since they managed to find another Taylor for this match who both top scored in the Leics first innings and was joint top wicket taker for Leics.....

Rain dances for tomorrow for day 4 at Chelmsford (Essex v Derby) and Northampton (North v Middx) please.
Looks like there may be only half a day's play at each.

Excellent interview with the Viscount on Surrey website. Comes across as very modest - paying tribute to the other Surrey bowlers even though he took most wickets in both innings....

Now that KP is being rested for the International One-days... is he eligible to play for Surrey in the C40 semi? Any thoughts?

Re: Surrey V Leics CC
Chichester - yes, an excellent interview. Lovely mix of modesty and enthusiasm from the Viscount. Thanks for flagging, Corporal.
As the ECB have rested Pietersen ''to sensibly manage his workload'', it seems to me illogical that they would then allow him to play for us in a CB40 semi-final. There again, the ECB and logic do not always walk hand in hand!
As regards Pietersen, I fully admit I am a grumpy old man. Whilst he is tremendously talented, I feel that he wears county colours (latterly Hants and now Surrey) as no more than a flag of convenience. I see no evidence of any commitment to or interest in Surrey on his part. I therefore don't want him brought into the semi-final side (if, in fact, permitted by the ECB).
If the ECB were to allow him to play, I'm sure Adams would have none of my misgivings and suspect Pietersen might be selected ahead of Schofield. I amaze myself - given some of my comments last season - by saying that would disappoint me.
I've commented more about this possibility in a couple of posts on the Wallpaper site (Oval World on the Net).

Right 100% success for today. But think for Surrey - or Gloucs - to have any chance of promotion the rain dance will have to be deployed successfully on about 10 more day - and selectively as between different parts of the kingdom. And of course Surrey (or Gloucs) will have to beat some tougher teams and not just Leics.

Guildford - SWC is notable by his absence atm on the Wallpaper site

No doubt if/when we lose either the semi or the final he will reappear with version 21 of "Adams must go!"

What's your take on Pietersen and a possible semi-final place?

Re: Surrey V Leics CC
My two pence worth - I wouldn't want him in the team purely because the others haven't lost a game without him so why do we need him? The place he would take would be Spriegel's and he has averaged over 50 and been fantastic so far. Then again, The Brain has been very disappointing (and slow) in this competition so I wouldn't mind Pietersen instead of him! No way he'll be allowed to play though, imo.

Re: Surrey V Leics CC
Guildford - I am fully paid up member of the grumpy old men club. I would prefer to stick with those who have got us thus far. For all the limitations of players like Schofield or Spriegel they have been integral part of team that has had 10 straight wins....
If Adams picks the existing team and they don't win I will not criticise him for failing to pick Pieterson, Ramps or the new spinner....

the only problem with the brain missing out is with no jade for the semi final if we took him out as well our bowling line up will be very short as we all know arafat can be very expensive.

Re: Surrey V Leics CC
Have to agree with a lot of the above comments... having done so well in the CB40 without KP, it doesn't feel right to deselect someone in favour of him now.... Great player as KP is, he's not exactly going to feature heavily in the future of Surrey cricket is he?
As for Surrey this season, its amazing given the recent debacles against Middx & Kent that they are even still in with a tiniest sniff of promotion!
Away against Northants next week should decide things one way or the other.... I suspect it will be the exstinguishing of the tiniest sniff
