First topic message reminder :

Mac started a really good thread today and while I'm not as fussy about things going off topic as some people, it does seem a shame to drown out Mac's thread with music chat - so I think we'll have a music corner for us golfers (in addition to the forum-wide music section)

I know Kwini is keen on his music, often throwing musical references into his ballwasher topics (I remember one of his last efforts on the old site being entitled The Boys Are Back In Town, and the conversation going off into Thin Lizzy territory!

S_R (on the other thread) made a reference to "hating the Beatles" - discuss! Whistle

Just chilling out after enjoying a nice perky bottle of red, reading about my erstwhile playing partner chunking his long irons. laughing

Listening to the irreplaceable Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the holding company tearing the guts out of Summertime! zen

Every time I listen to Janis Joplin, which I have done on and off now for probably 30+ years and a criminally small back catalogue it is, I am sharply reminded just how emotive she was. I never got the chance to see her live and am very envious of anyone who has.

However, heresy I know, but I actually prefer Kris Kristoffersons version of me and Bobby Mcgee.

Apparently chest issues brought on by a lifetime of smoking - I saw them live at the NEC on their comeback tour - had the voices of angels then and when they sang 'Let it be me', not a dry eye in the house and everyone on their feet.  Crying or Very sad

I've also just heard that Eusebio has gone as well. This is getting to be a bad habit for the 60+ isn't it Kwini!!

Happy New Year shanks,
Completely agree! I subscribe to the on-line Independent to read their obits!! Hope Terry Biddlecombe's has a few good stories.

Don't know if you're familiar with John Prine's music, but he has a (famous if that's what you like) song called "Paradise" about mining scumbags taking the tops off mountains in "Meulenberg County", in Kentucky. Where Don Everly was born!
Well worth a youtube visit.

And the seasons greeting right back to you Kwini - I watched the John Prine you tube thingamajig, he seemed to be somewhat pi55ed at the time, but it was obviously heartfelt and I got the feeling that there were a lot of verses cut out, maybe I'll hunt out a longer version. It reminded me of John McGovern's 'in my Liverpool home' that now has a rumoured 100+ verses - we speak with an accent exceedingly rare, meet under a statue exceedingly bare and if you want a cathedral we have one to spare........

Musical secret you want no-one to know...........on occasions I have been known to listen to Toby Keith!.....Ah'll get ma coat, yup!  Tumbleweed

I'll check that out shanks!

Funny (strange, not haha) story - we went to see Prine (who always appears p1ssed but maybe that's his persona as well) and there was an older gent sitting next to my wife who got up when the encore started. Next thing we know he's up on stage strumming away to his heart's content to "Paradise"! Still don't know who it was . . . . .

Enjoyed a somewhat unexpected pleasure last weekend when got the chance to see John Hiatt in concert for the first time.
Knew some of his music and, it turned out, many of his tracks which were recorded by others, but his part of a two-man show (with Lyle Lovett the only other on stage) was magnificent.

Some live shows are such a disappointment, but this was a revelation.

PS: They had the guy in my previous post up on stage again!!!! Turns out he's a highly respected record producer who lives part-time in Vermont . . . . . . and part-time in Co.Galway!

shanker,
Sad to say that I recall when Seeger's songs were thought in America to be subversive!
Many years later I saw him with Arlo Guthrie.
But loved the fact that he performed at Obama's "Inaugural" festivities.

A little plug for you all who are near a computer with speakers at the moment. If you like 60s music, take a listen to an internet show my mate does every week

Wednesdays at 2pm (UK) the Beastie 60s show, available to stream for free on 5townsfm.com (also available on TuneIn app for PC and smart phones)

Great 60s music and a terrific presenter (purely a hobby DJ as I was a few years ago - not a regular job for him). He also does a rock show on Sundays at 4pm (UK)

Maybe a bit short notice for today but one to listen out for

Somewhat apt quote from the Arctic Monkeys frontman at the Brits relating to that Davie (as reproduced on the BBC today)?

"That rock and roll - it just won't go away. It might hibernate from time to time and sink back into the swamp.

"I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands it adheres to some of its rules, but it's always waiting there just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever.

"Yeah, that rock and roll, it seems like its fading away sometimes, but it will never die.

"And there's nothing you can do about it."

Just a matter of time before your comeback as a DJ then!

Musicians with opinions are really annoying or rather the timing, place and opportunistic method by which they express them are.

Davie,
I fear I'm at the stage of life where I'm (re)discovering artists of the past who I've neglected rather than new singers/bands these days.
But have tix for The Head and the Heart in a couple of months tho' not sure I can go. Quite polished, if not especially original.

Have enjoyed a couple of John Prine concerts recently, and saw John Hiatt for the first time last month. All our Yesterdays that I somehow missed! Hoping to see Leo Kottke next week, and he's older than me!

A little update on this one .. his 60s show is still Wednesday afternoon but the rock show has moved to 8pm Thursday night now (UK Time)

Every few weeks he throws his playlist over to regular listeners and has 8 or 9 categories where he asks listeners to pick songs to fit certain slots - these categories are things like ...

Show Opener - a good one to kick off
Educating Slash - he has a running joke where he thinks Slash is an overrated guitarist so invites people to nominate songs with great guitar in it to educate the top hatted one
Is it Rock - something a little more off the wall - does it fit into the "rock" genre?
Punk corner - some classic British or American New Wave
Prog Pair - a couple of prog rock songs
Comfort Blanket - one of those songs you always turn to in times of need - like a rock onesie (his words not mine)
Cover version - what it says on the tin
Rock Ballad - ditto

Tonights show is going to feature my selections .. so though I don't get to broadcast anymore I do get my songs heard on the radio! Check it out of you get a chance and like some good old rock music .. 8pm UK www.5townsfm.com

Yesterday was Anzac day - I am not from the antipodes, but it is a bloody good reason to sit down late at night in absolute peace and quiet, with the drink of your choice and listen again to the heart wrenching, startlingly pure 'and the band played waltzing matilda' by June Tabor.
Treat yourselves to 6 minutes of perfect angst!  Sad

Mark Knopfler 65 today. Good lord I feel old.
One of my top five faves of all time.
Saw "Straits" once at Wembley (long time ago, obviously) and have seldom been so disappointed in a concert.
Time for MK to come to the North Country before it's too late for one of us!

Not a Dire Straits fan but Brothers in Arms is a good tune.
Concerts are generally a let down for me, massively looked forward to Elvis Costello about 20 years ago and was bored rigid.
In fact best ever was first, Smiths on their first big tour, Middlesbrough Town Hall, municipal gardens had every daffodil nicked from them. Happy oh so long ago days!! Sob.

Mr Knopfler is certainly a faded star these days. The rot started for me when he turned his eyes towards Nashville and the country scene. My biggest gripe with Dire Straits though was their insistance on making a concert arena as much like the studio recordings as possible. I saw DS 3 or 4 times in the 80/early 90s and every time they sounded the same - I may as well have sat at home and listened to the cd; at least then I wouldn't have had to suffer alcohol out or plastic containers. If they had thrown in a couple of cover versions and let their (admittedly receding) hair down a bit, it could have been so good

Davie, Spot on, exactly what I thought. Still some good efforts from MK amidst CD racks of boring dross.

Digs,
Had never seen Evvis and had front row seats for the 2013 version. Self-indulgent and disappointing. (Mrs C a few weeks earlier was not much better.)
I love concerts when the guys and gals have something different to offer, puts me off them for life when they just go through the motions.
Have seen some crackers over the past couple of years so can't complain too much.

I have a soft sport for dire straits. My dad was a big fan and used to play their records. So DS felt like one of the first proper bands I listened to. I used to love money for nothing banged out full volume when I was a kid.
