Dunhill Cup
I see bidding on ebay for an amateur place has now reached £17,000.
My guess it's either Mav or SJ.

Not guilty your honour!
Though I'd love to play in it I would refuse pay anything as ridiculous as thousands for the priveldge. That said I notice that so called celeb and DJ Spoony has an invite for this year

I get the Old Course for free, Kingsbarns for £25 and Carnoustie for £25 with a mate so 17k is a bit rich for meDavie wrote:It sure won't be s_r

I think it's as high as £17K for the chance to play golf with Tim Henman . . .

Of course not Mac, but I'd rather spend £17k getting to a level where I could turn pro and not need to pay for entry.

Re: Dunhill Cup
That is an interesting concept super, I wonder how much it would cost to turn one of us 606v2'ers into a pro?

Well we'd need to spend a grand on you before we even began Mac to replace your hickories and guttee percee balls.
Intersting question though. If you took 3 years off work and lived your golfing life as a pro does in terms of practice/competitions play (minus the Shane Lowry excesses of course) how far do you think you could get?

Re: Dunhill Cup
Probably worth a fresh thread but contrast of 2 young club members this week both 18 yr old off 3/4 h cap
One gone off to US on golf scholarship much practise/play.
Other started as club assistant pro 100 hours a week in the shop and might get out to play 9 holes in the dark.
Both doing what they wanted/could afford, who will fare the better.Good luck to both.

Re: Dunhill Cup
Interesting thought that how long to get one of us to a level where could turn pro and have a crack at Q school. I reckon to have a decent chance you'd need to get to minimum level of +4/+5 handicap even though you only need to be scratch to apply to Q-school....
How much practise you reckon would be needed and playing time.... Hmm I think new thread in order to debate I'm currently using my phone to post so any volunteers

Re: Dunhill Cup
If the new thread starts there was a footballer who I think was called Roy Wegerley (not the right spelling). He was a decent low handicapper who turned pro. I think he got into a couple of events in South Africa but never did much at that level. I think he was born in SA, played for USA and his club was in England.
Didn't Ivan Lendl also have a go once retired from tennis.
In both cases they would have had the time and money to be able to give it a proper go. I suppose they show that getting to scratch is relatively obtainable for people with the time and money but earning money from golf is a different matter.
And back to the original posting. £17k is a lot given that I would then have to practice like a pro and not earn anything between winning the place and the competition so that I didn't embarrass myself.

Former coventry player i think twoeightnine
I was reading about the difference between pros and Scratch Players not that long ago, and butch harmon commented that if you cant regularly shoot 6/7 under on your home course were you know every putt, approach, danger exceptionally well, then you will struggle to become a decent level pro.
Though for 17K i would be looking to play 175 shots (not much change there then) for moneys worth except on last hole were i knock it closer than playing partners on second shot for tap in birdie

Damn, you found me out. NOT.
I will however take as a compliment the fact that you even considered I might be that loaded!
