Dreadful Season for Yorkshire Empty Dreadful Season for Yorkshire

Post by LondonTiger Sat 10 Sep 2011, 4:16 pm

Well we won the first match of the season vs Worcestershire, and the last vs Somerset.

In between it has been dreadful - with the nadir out in the Netherlands getting just 130 in a 40 over game. (Though the defeat to Notts runs it close).

I just hope Moxon is not sacked, and next season we can play a little closer to potential.

Player of the Season - Ryan Sidebottom
Young Player of the Season - Gary Ballance

Farewell division 1, I hope we see you again soon.

I think Rashid and Shazhad having poor seasons has been your major downfall. Not having Bresnan to play either would of been disappointing. On the bright side Gary Ballance and Jonny Bairstow look very talented players.

We also had poor seasons from Lyth and McGrath (was this Mags final game?). Combine this with the loss of Jacques Rudolph's runs and the batting always looked fragile.

The biggest indictment of the bowling is that Rich Pyrah was our second best bowler.

LondonTiger - whilst it might not be right, it would be fairly understandable for people to be calling for Moxon's head after such a dreadful season. What's behind your continuing support? Cheers, Guildford [interested, not critical].

In developing the players Moxon has done a good job. He wanted to sign an experienced batsman, but the money was not available - the club were close to going bust. Allied to Mags car crash the batting line-up was young.

Rudolph and Lyth were the most successful opening partneship in CC1 last season, without their runs we struggled. However I see this as a blip. Far more worrying was the lack of form shown by Shahzad and Rashid (who bowled too flat with no real tweak all season), and the lack of progress from Hannon-Dolby and Patterson.

This time we were raving about how well Moxon had developed local talent. I would like him to be given a year to see if this was a blip.

Also not as if we have any other options - there were calls at Headingley for Lehman to be coach - but he is busy in Aus and IPL - with no interest in returning.

Thanks for that, Tiger. Giving Moxon another year seems fair and sensible in those circumstances. Do Yorks have a specialist bowling coach? Seems that could be an area to be looked into ....

The bowling coach is Steve Oldham, who has been in place for quite some time and in general has done an excellent job. He works mainly with the academy boys, concentrating on technique.

What the first team bowlers need is mentoring and learning how to build an over/spell. For the seamers this was meant to be one of teh benefits of Ryan coming back - but as he fields on the boundary little he can do during a game.

yorkshire arent helped by the fact that bresnan now plays test cricket as well, so they hardly have him at all...when he only played odi cricket yorkshire still had him, but now he is crucial in all forms for england, so he isnt really seen at yorkshire now.

We beat Worcestershire twice (not a difficult task I grant you) but I'm not sure a spell in division two will not be too bad for the youngsters to build some confidence by stringing a few wins together as a team.
Call me be old fashioned (or old git if you like) but I like the idea of a home grown Yorkshire team with no overseas players even if it means two or three seasons in the lower league.
As for player of the season/young player of the season I would have thought Jonny was up there for his championship form alone.

Sithee!

Playing Leics twice a season in Div 2 can do wonders for a team's confidence. Very Happy

I would be surprised if Yorks didn't come back up after one or two seasons. There's loads of potential...

I was perhaps guilty of considering Bairstow as an established player. With Wainwright and Patterson almost definitely moving on, Broph and Mags probably retiring and TimTom now on a full time England contract - I see next years line-up as:

Sayers
Root
Lyth
Gale
Bairstow
Ballance
Rashid
Pyrah
Shahzad
Sidebottom
Ashraf.

The young batsmen woudl learn a lot from having a top class international batsman in the side. However they are no longer available nor could we afford one.
