Surreys Player of the Season???
Thought I would start this thread even though we have one more huge match tomorrow, below are a few candidates
1. Tom Maynard - A young batsman who was in his debut season for the club, thrown straight into the first team he averaged over 40 in both forms of the game digging us out of many holes in the T20 and also producing the 123 that gained the bonus points needed for promotion in the last game, ontop of all that a great fielder who chipped in a few run outs as well.
2. Tim Linely - Have we at last found Martin Bicknell mark 2?? took wickets consistantly all season long, 73 of them in fact at an average of just over 18. Did not play to much in the one day stuff but still managed a few wickets at an average of just 19. Always took the new ball and nearly always delivered.
3. Zander De Bruyn - Took some stick from fans for a slow strike rate in the T20 but averaged 55 in the championship the highest out of all the regular players, this was often coming in when the top 3 or 4 had failed with some important knocks. Lets not forget another man in his debut season for the club
4. Jason Roy - A young batsman who forced his way into the first team, this was he first full season as a regular and although needs to continue to develop in the long form of the game he averaged just a touch under 50 in the one day stuff and no matter what score he gets or what format he is playing in he is exciting to watch. Has made it impossible for the top brass to leave him out of the team.
5. Stuart Meaker - Another youngster given his chance in the first team, the first time he has been given a regular run and he showed he has progressed well taking 44 wickets at an average of 22.57.
6. Pragyan Ojha - I know how can somebody who only played a quarter of the season have a shout for player of the season??? But can anyone of had a greater impact? Can anyone say we would have won those last four games to secure promotion with Arafat instead of him. 24 wickets at an average of 12.96 including a best of 6 for 8 speaks for itself.
7. Matt Spriegal - Some may be surprised to find him listed as he has only really featured in the one day stuff, but Linely only really featured in the four day stuff and he is strong favourite for this award. Solid bowling performances at an average of 28 was backed up by being our strongest one day batsman with an average of over 56. A younger squad member who was having questions asked by fans but has shown he does have a future with the club when the pressure was on and he really needed to.

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
Linley definitely for me, with The Brain a close second.
I would also suggest RHB as a candidate as he has captained us to promotion and a one-day final and has also done fine with the bat despite bring moved into an unfamiliar position.

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
JBD... I did consider H-B as he has done well for a young captain but he just hasn't done enough with the bat in any of the competitions to justify player of the season imo. While 37 in the championship is decent its not enough to take this award and his runs in the CB40 and T20 have been poor.
Not having a go at him as I think he has had a solid season and has taken us up, just not done quite enough to get on the short list.

Hi Surreyfan (you're so upbeat I can't call you Depressed!),
Good and interesting post.
Like jbd, for me it has to be the Viscount with the Brain a close second. I suspect the Club may judge it the other way round or even give a joint award.
Again like jbd, I think Hyphen should also be in the mix. Second Surrey player to a thousand Championship runs plus leading us to promotion and our first Lords' final in ten years can't be overlooked.
I like all the other players you put forward; one especially . However, I don't think any get near to the Viscount's or the Brain's achievements this year.

Guildford
Linley gets my vote as well though interested to hear what others think!
I am no longer depressed though am struggling to edit my user name, I'm sure by the start of next summer I will have worked it all out.

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
I think Linley has to be player of the season for his outstanding haul of wickets, great consistency and first rate contribution to team spirit. With the Brain a good second
When it comes to Surrey's young player of the season there are a few candidates, including Meaker, Hyphen, and Wine gums. Not sure who I would go for out of that lot.
Award for player who was considerably better than most of us feared. Short list is Batty and Schofield - with the award going to Batty I would suggest.
Award for best selection against the wishes of 606v2 posters would have to go to River Jordan at the end of the season .
Agree Spriegel should be up for some sort of award. Possibly the most specialised player of the season. Not up to much in T20. Completely ignored for CC, but excellent in CB40

The Brain gets a special cardiac services award for his suicidal running between the wickets towards the end of today's match.

After yesterdays innings and his overall performances I think RHB should be on that list.

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
Taking nothing away from Dernbach's performance on Saturday, Gareth Batty also bowled very well at difficult and vital times.
Surrey regulars will appreciate that is praise indeed coming from me after some of my comments about Batty last season ....

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
A very hard call. The stats suggest either The Brian with bat in hand, or the Viscount with ball in hand. But you could make a case for any of up to half a dozen others, which just goes to show what a great season we had.

i agree that it has to be either, the brain or viscount.

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
As mentioned previously for me it has to be the Viscount. Two other factors in his favour are that we have struggled for years to bowl sides out at all, let alone for modest scores. And his performance this season was way above anything he had achieved before.

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
like i said before though, was it the tiflex ball, that helped linley, masters etc, or was it pure skill?
we will find out next year.

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
Linley has to be player of the season, with De Bruyn a close second. Wine Gums for me would get the young player award due to his very good record in all forms of the game despite it being his first full season at this level really being involved in all types of cricket. Biggest disappointment would have to be Ramps, I really hope he finds some form again next season as it would be sad for him to bow out on such a low note after a fantastic career. At the end of the day everyone has played their part in a superb season.

is this the start of another period of success for surrey?

Re: Surreys Player of the Season???
The Viscount and others will have to wait a few more weeks for their awards.
Awards are normally given in late September. However, this year - to celebrate the club's success - it's a £25 a head dinner and awards evening on Thursday 10th November.
Due to the recession now impacting the salt mining industry, I won't be there!

Guildford - hope this doesn't lead to production consolidating eastwards and your transfer to old Soviet territory!

Thanks for the concern, Corporal. I should still be able to eke out an existence on the edges of the Woking salt mines for a little while yet!

I managed to obtain this extract article written by MuchHappier (seems a totally inappropriate name today) from the Surrey vaults. It was first posted in September last year as the Surrey boys on 606 v2 began to consider their player of the season.
Rather than dwell on the cause and circumstances of Tom Maynard's death, I prefer today to remember his talent and impact at Surrey as well as thinking of the promise that never had time to mature. From a cricketing perspective, his abilities and our loss are neatly summed up in MuchHappier's post. I appreciate that is as nothing compared to the loss being experienced by his family and friends.

Brilliant post guildford. Today is such a sad day, it matters not how it happened, only that it is a tragic day for his friends, family and the cricket world in general.
