Sonny Bill Williams (again) Empty Sonny Bill Williams (again)

Post by Adam D Wed 08 Feb 2012, 9:32 am

Just to let anyone who wants to know, that Sonny Bill Williams just won the NZ Heavyweight Belt by knocking out Clarence Tillman in the first round.

}The fight had some bad blood in the build up, after Clarence had hit Sonny at the weigh in, leading to a brawl.

Sonny steam rolled Clarence in the first with a brutal knockout - Sonny looked good but Clarence looked awful.

World Champ in Rugby and National Champ in boxing.

Haha so glad he knocked him out, especially in the first round! That Tillman guy is an idiot, especially from what I saw at the weigh-in.

Excellent stuff for him, he's a hell of a sportsman. Seems like a top quality guy too

When Tillman took the swipe at SBW in the weigh-in Sonny Bill said:

"I'm going to f--- you up, bro" and later on:

"I didn't feel nuffin', man..." Laugh

Not really a boxing fan so have no idea of the quality of fighter he fights.

Just climbing on the band wagon.

If George North and SBW had to run into each other it could create a black hole! Shocked

The lowlife bums he fights are the "elite" boxers in NZ. Its not his fault the quality of Australian and New Zealand boxing is terrible.

Seems to pick up key titles easily.

An NRL finals winner, Rugby World cup winner without doing a lot and now a national pro heavyweight boxing champ by beating a fat nobody.

Seems they're just throwing titles at him....

Some of us are a little more clued up though, the end of the golden weather is near...

National titles barely register in this day and age, nowadays if you want a title you can create your own. The fact that a 5-fight part-timer in Williams has just won the NZ version by barely lifting a finger says it all.

He should fight David Tua next.

ChequeredJersey wrote:So is SBW unpopular in the Antipodes then? My cousins in Canberra used to love him before he left the NRL

He was a big name in the NRL prior to walking out on his contract with the club he had played for. When he walked, and particularly the way he went, he was slammed by all and sundry in the league community especially, but there was a general frustration and consternation over how a sportsman could be allowed to break a contract. The reality was that he couldnt and was still in breach, but like anything the consequences of that breach took a lot longer to settle than it took for the sh*tstorm to explode.

The storm that erupted was also fueled by the fact League and Union can't stand each other. Even though the games themselves have more in common in my opinion than any other two I can think of, there has always been a social class divide in oz concerning which one you play and follow, and a natural competition for players. The fact Sonny Bill fled to play union meant there was an additional sting to the percieved betrayal. The Union community in Oz didn't exactly lay silent at the time either, so it created a lot of bad blood and he was the centre of it.

A third issue was the way his management are viewed. Nasser Hussein and Anthony Mundine are high profile, widely disliked, not trusted, and couldnt give a sh*t about any of it.

If he returns to the NRL, most of it will be forgiven. Leaving League to play Union makes a player a pariah, but returning is viewed as the ultimate endorsement for the game. Sailor, Tuqiri, Rogers, Gasnier were all welcomed back warmly.

Personally I try to ignore the sideshow and when I manage that I find him easy enough to like. I think he comes across as a respectful enough bloke, and while he certainly hasnt chosen a standard path to follow, that of itself shouldnt be a crime. I'm not sure what happened to him in NZ. This time last year it was a love affair, but it changed at some point along the way.

That bad is it? I just seen the clip. I can't believe people are going down on Sonny Bill; the guy must be the pinnacle for athletes in rugby and he steps into the ring against some fat guy. Don't get me wrong he'd make a decent bouncer but boxing is not for him. I don't think it's for Sonny either.

Mundine is one heck of an annoying runt, highly opportunist and boastful considering he's never been close to top of his division. I swear I used to comb through his results hoping he'd lost and badly, sadly however he's a mismatch specialist so not often any such luck.

Spot on Knowsit. I dont know if you are aware of a bloke namedDanny Green, but he was decent enough and Mundine dodged him for years, all the while mouthing off about him. They eventually had their fights, but Green was on the down hill and Mundine had learnt enough to get over him. I could see them managing SBW the same way which means he may well do something someday, but it will take a while before he fights real boxers. The real mugs are us for paying any attention until that day comes!

Well aware indeed of Green, did not know those particular details however. Were you in turn aware that Mundine once called out Jeff Fenech, long retired and 11 years his senior, to fight him? Talk about wanting to fight the best! Every time he's stepped up he's been soundly beaten. Also been quoted as saying he'll never let a Christian beat him...

Very Happy I didnt know that mate. Pretty much fits his normal approach though doesnt it.

I've never been able to work out if he's actually pretty smart, or has just been lucky. He apparently picked up the $750k tab on Sonny's settlement, so he's made some money along the way. Not many of our domestic based sportspeople (Ponting, Warne, Thorpe types probably the exceptions) make the sort of money that would allow them to do that. Someone in his corner is smart I think, I just dont know which one. Might be Nasser.

At this point I should suggest that any jokes about George North coming out of said closet are probably going to be inappropriate, and will probably be deleted.
