Is it home or away? Would love to watch it in Europe bout the thought of 30,000 sceptics singing 'hell yeah' and 'where's my howt dowg' makes me want to spend an evening with Davidemore.

Truss -
I'm intrigued...being as you are an American did you go to watch any relatively big fights whilst you lived there....and since you have moved to our fair old lands have you seen anything whilst here in Britain...
I would be intrigued to get a perspective on the difference in atmosphere.
I went to Hatton v Mayweather and it was electrifying....though im pretty certain that was down to the travelling fans more than anything. I have been to a fair few events here in the UK and they always seem to have cracking atmosphere...where as whenever I watch a show from America (on the tv) it doesn't seem to have the same buzz....

Re: Boxing Ryder Cup
Hardly a fair Ryder Cup, Az, if it's going to be the entire Americas! A zillion times the land mass, the population and the gyms, I expect. What next, the Americas against Antarctica?
I'd like to see a US versus Latin America contest - that might be real fun. I'd have enjoyed it even more in the 70s or 80s.

The Ryder cup used to be between UK and USA. Now its europe. The best of the Americas v the best of Europe.

Re: Boxing Ryder Cup
I know, but the golf tournament now features sides with roughly equal populations against each other. The whole of the Americas against the whole of Europe at boxing would be a catchweight contest of Pacquiaoesque proportions.

Re: Boxing Ryder Cup
Well the ryder cup is America vs Europe so a boxing equivalent would have to be the same otherwise it's the might of America, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Argentina against the UK and Wladimir.

Aha, a Presidents Cup, az, now you're talking. Americas still win it by miles - perhaps 12-5 or 13-4.

Re: Boxing Ryder Cup
Too true, 6oldenbhoy. If amateur boxing is still the cradle of future professional champions, perhaps we can look for a little European hegemony five years from now? Nice thought, but I doubt that life will be quite so simple.

Oh alright, then, az. The Americas are no match for the European-led Rest of the World, who coast to an easy triumph before the third day has even started.
Better?

Yeah, with this APB nonsense I doubt any of the top Eastern European/Asian fighters will fight 'professionally'.
Sorry to derail your thread even further Azania, but did you see GB are in talks to have a WSB franchise, Captain?

Noooooo! Take the best two from each division and discuss who wins! How why and when, plus the odd anti American jibe thrown in for good measure.

Re: Boxing Ryder Cup
I hadn't, 6oldenbhoy, but I've just looked briefly at a couple of articles after your prompt. Is this an idea that could catch on? Possibly one for another thread, or az will start steaming from the ears, but it could mean that the numbers of professional fighters in the future are drastically reduced even further.

The Ryder cup is USA v Europe though, you're not comparing like for like.
If it's 'The Americas' then it should be versus 'Eurasia' or something like that. In which case there're a fair few asians at the lower weights that come to our aid!

Re: Boxing Ryder Cup
This was one of my few articles on the old 606. I suggested calling it the Bob Fitzsimmons trophy, due to his duel nationality. In my format the top three from Europe would fight the top 3 from USA in each weight division, as picked by the captains (perhaps trainers?). A points system would be in place 1 point for a draw 2 for a points win, and 3 for a KO.
Complex and would never happen due to promotors and politics. But would be great.

this has happened before, there was a uk vs usa event in liverpool, it was quite big, the only 2 fighters i can remember are alan minters son and peter manfredo jr. it was fun though, think it may have had a few other contender fighters too.

I saw this last night, sean and it did make me laugh. Poor Truss! The article itself wasn't all that unreasonable and he made a lot of decent points but he really did put himself out on a limb.

Bless him.
I've recently taken up golf myself but wouldn't dream of posting on the golf board, the attitude of the regulars on there is not welcoming at all.

Re: Boxing Ryder Cup
It always amazes me that people on boards for other sports automatically assume that anyone posting on boxing has participated in the sport and make references to someone taking a few headshots.
I've been hit in the face once and that was when playing football and the only black eye I've ever had was when I accidently smacked myself in the face with a golf club (don't ask).

I think its just those kind of people - golf is more of a past-time in my eyes, so i'd be shocked if someone who watched golf avidly hadn't at least had a go, they might think the same of us.

He deserves it. He only went on there to antagonise. Statements like Europeans "overachieve" are patronising. Why he thinks America is above the rest of the world, I do not know, but moments like these are priceless. Truss was being an idiot.

Sorry JM, have to pull you up on that one. Golf is 100% a sport and not a pastime.
