Performance related pay - a solution to Scotland's problems?
Having gone off on one earlier today on the Scottish 7's feeble attempt at world domination, I was wondering what could make the players try hard/harder (* = delete as appropriate)? The answer is fairly obvious in that for all our pro/7s players plus the coaches and administrators, performance related pay should be introduced. Call it the old "carrot and stick" approach.
But would it work or would it cause a drain of the all too few decent players to England or France? Can you imagine the soul searching that would go on as players look round the dressing room and ask themselves if they trust the guys in front of them enough to let them be responsible for the level of their own monthly pay-cheque. It would certainly be a massive display or confidence/lack of confidence (agains delete as appropriate) in your team-mates. My hope would be that it would lead to stronger characters dragging the best out of their team mates and eradicate that under-performance which has become the hallmark of all Scottish representative sides recently.
On the down-side, would it lead to a "win at all costs" approach?

Graham Morrison would have starved to death years ago based on this approach.

Most research shows that bonus schemes actually lead to lower quality work if the work is more than a basic manual task. It's counter intuitive but scientifically sound.
You're not going to get "stronger characters" dragging others forward. Those who care will try as hard with or without "bonuses". You will end up reducing the wage for most players and the greedy ones will simply sign for other clubs.
