How vintage was your year?
First topic message reminder :
Inspired by Truss's 1982 year of the invincibles thread and in the absence of Union who loves this kind of thing, here is a bit of fun that may, or may not, take off. It does involve a wee bit of work and disclosing how old you are, but who were the champions of the 8 original weight classes as of your date of birth. The WBC/WBA split in the early 1960's can cause a bit of grief depending on how old you are, so in that instance, and where there isn't a unified champion, just pick which of the champions you feel is the best.
We can see who was born in the best year.....
Here goes for me (5.11.1977)
Heavyweight: Muhammad Ali
Light Heavyweight: Victor Galindez
Middleweight: Rodrigo Valdez
Welterweight: Carlos Palomino
Lightweight: Roberto Duran
Featherweight: Danny Lopez
Bantamweight: Carlos Zarate
Flyweight: Miguel Canto
Not too shabby a list, and considering I missed out on Monzon at Middleweight by only a couple of months, I am definitely a contender.
Over to you.....

These things are sent to try us Tina, it also means you're allowed to do a shamelessly populist one without anyone judging you too harshly. I had my Lennox Lewis - Convince me thread, you can do a Mike Tyson is the Greatest ever FACT or Froch>Calzaghe discuss thread whenever you want.

Truss has got Locche, I think, Tino, if his gerrymandering hasn't already brought about an immediate DQ for him.

I tried that with my Mayweather and Pacquiao thread just before Christmas Jeff. It still barely scraped into double figures.
It's alright though, the Eugene Bullard story is gonna drop like a bomb when it hits the forum.

Now isn't that a fight you'd love to see? Can you imagine Pryor's face when Locche started with the Chaplin routine? Watch the steam rise from The Hawk's feathers. Locche WDQ 10 is my best guess.

Aye, I can see Locche fiddling him around till him implodes. UD for Nicolino. Especially if he can get Pryor over to Buenos Aires.

A moot point, captain, as McGirt would have rolled over both of them on the same night. As a side note, I've always fancied Starling against Leonard and Fenech over Sanchez.
Not that I'm desperately trying to make my year look stronger than it was or anything, of course!

I think it's more just to do with the fact that I've got a craggy, weathered old face of someone much older and a Melrewesque dislike of all that rubbish music in the charts these days, Milky. Born after my time!

Re: How vintage was your year?
Not sure, Milky. You know how in every school year there's always 'that guy' with a beard, a chest prematurely hairy enough to pass for a doormat who looks years older than he is and, hence, is always the one who has to go in to the local shop at the request of his mates to try and con the shopkeeper in to thinking they're eighteen, so that he'll sell him a bottle of Vodka (usually thrown away after about five sips between us once we all realised we couldn't hold a pint of lager between us at fourteen)? Well, I was 'that guy.'
When I was sixteen someone told me I looked like Father Ted. I kid you not. Pretty hurtful!

If its any consolation Chris, in our group of mates, the old looking balding one is the only one who hasn't changed much. Don't suppose it's much consolation.
Truss I bought a ski/golf apartment in tremblant a few years back. First days skiing, - 25, dropped to - 35 overnight. I know what cold is. Sold the apartment at the first opportunity.

Thanks Sir. And thanks for the umpiring services. I genuinely expected only a few replies but it has thrown up some excellent debate and cracking lists.
Good stuff and thanks to all who contributed.
I am off to bed myself, no doubt to woken up shortly by any one of the kids who has either wet the bed, needs a drink or has had a bad dream.

Less of the balding talk, Milky - I've still got a lush forest of jet black to boast, thank you very much. Not too badly placed to keep it if my dad and graddad are anything to go by.

Particularly strange behaviour given that its almost impossible not to get served in a Dundee pub. I was a fairly fresh faced 15 year old and regularly managed to get served in three different pubs (Deacon Brodies, the Balcony Bar, and MacDaniels). Terrible pubs, but hey, I felt like Rod Stewart!

Re: How vintage was your year?
Not many British fighters in people's lists, but I'am about to change that with this fantastic line up :
Heavyweight: Muhammad Ali
Light Heavyweight: John Conteh
Middleweight: Carlos Monzon
Welterweight: John H Stracey
Lightweight: Roberto Duran
Featherweight: Alexis Arguello
Bantamweight: Rodolfo Martinez / Alfonso Zamora
Flyweight: Miguel Canto / Alfonso Lopez
As we are only using the original eight classes, has there ever been a stronger British contingent?

No, certainly no-one has declared a better British list yet, Union. Still doesn't come close to toppling Boxtthis but a good effort.
I have a signed boxing glove from John H Stracey at home. I met him at the York Hall. Lovely man.

1980 would have been good for the British contingent, in that you could have had Minter and Watt in your list, with Maurice Hope in light-middleweight support.

1999 would be slightly above average. You could have Lennox Lewis and Naseem Hamed. Not sure how many 14 year old posters we have though.
