Argh isn't he nice..
Been talking to truss earlier about Prizefighters egglington and it got me thinking...
(this is lame BTW)
I was a massive Steve Robinson fan in the 90's for no other reason that he tried hard in the ring and seemed a nice fella. Has any one else became a fan of an unlikely boxer for the same reasons? (Or is it just me)?

Billy Hardy...Nearly caused one of the biggest upsets of the 90's when he lost narrowly against Orlando....I gave it to Hardy......
Got battered in the rematch though.....Hardy was another Naz victim I believe..

Can't open that Steffan so will assume it was playful banter, you know I have nothing but love for our resident Welsh nationalist and honourary Dane (for the next few months anyway)

Bellew, I used to really dislike him, but after hearing him outside of the ring, he is one of my favourite fighters.

Same Before the Fight with cleverly i was a huge cleverly fan, now seeing more and more of Bellew in and out the ring, and that fact cleverly is becoming known as a gimmick champ as he not getting big fights, i now rate Bellew as my favourite fighter.

Matt Skelton for me. Just seemed like a nice bloke ... then he went to prison! Oh hum. Mind you, I'm happy to take that as a misunderstanding, such is my irrational liking of the man.

Gary Mason.....I know people say about a lot of boxers he's just a big cuddly teddy bear really, but I always reckon most of them would be fairly scary like say Frank Bruno who always looks like he might kill you. Not Gary Mason though, just seemed like a lovely bloke. RIP.

Re: Argh isn't he nice..
Actually just looked at Masons record, forgot he only lost once to all time great.
Anyhow he actually fought the same guy in his first 2 fights, Al Malcolm...first fight KO 1 second KO 2...odd. Not like the first fights result could have been in doubt. Then same gain in his 5th and 6th fights with Steve Gee. both TKO's in the 5th.
I thought it was interesting anyway...

Re: Argh isn't he nice..
Mason did seem a very nice man. Tried to hit on the ex mrs milky on a fairly regular basis, but apparently did so in a gentlemanly fashion and never once threatened to beat up her boyfriend.
My nomination is sylvester mittee. Seemed like a nice guy and decent fighter. Tough to decide who to support when he fought honeyghan... A domestic showdown, where one was the better prospect who you had high hopes for, the other was a nicer guy.

Re: Argh isn't he nice..
I might be a little biased as he's from my neck of the woods, but to me Jason Booth has always been one of British boxing's real nice guys.
A rough (though not dirty) handful in the ring, but always gentle as a lamb outside of it whenever I've come across him. I've never seen him bad mouth an opponent or be anything less than extremely humble and gracious regardless of whether he's won or lost, and whatever he's lacking in technical skill he's more than made up for it with an iron will (let's not forget his crippling personal problems out of the ring a few years back) and hard work.
As Milky alluded to something similar, I'd say I felt the same for the Quigg-Booth fight a few months back. I knew that Quigg would win it deep down, of course, and from a British boxing perspective it was the 'right' result, but in my heart I would have loved to have seen Jason pull out one last big career moment. Ditto the Galahad fight.

Don't know if it's unlikely or not, but Alexis Arguello always appeared to be the perfect gentleman, both inside and outside the ring. When I had the good fortune to bump into him and chat for a while, I was delighted to find that appearances were not deceptive. A gem of a person and one of my great heroes, old Alexis.

Re: Argh isn't he nice..
Arguello certainly seemed one of the guys that no-one had a bad word to say about. Even his friendship to pryor, the guy who bumped him a few places on the atg lists and did so with the 'bottle incident'... something his supporters used as an excuse but i don;t believe arguello ever did.
Of course with all these nice guys of boxing... they earn their living punching people, so i'm not sure any are destined for sainthood, but in the relative terms of such a discussion, arguello is a good choice.
Don't know enough of Booth Chris (didn't make many local news headlines round here!).

Got to put Earnie Shavers up for a shout here, have had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and could not be more friendly approachable or willing to take a few minute to chat with you. On the occasions this subject has cropped up it does appear my experience with Shavers is very much the norm.

did you find yourself quiveringly reverential, knowing you're talking to one of the biggest punchers in the history of boxing? "Hello mr shaver's, would you mind terribly if i asked you a few boxing related questions...only if you don't mind, i wouldn't want to put you out, are you sure, really."

Re: Argh isn't he nice..
Was a bit embarrassing to be honest milky, met him on the way out to Vegas for the Hatton Mayweather fight and got chatting about the fight and he was saying how hard it is to fight such good defensive fighters and we were discussing Floyd’s defensive style and I found myself mimicking Floyd’s defence. Even as I was doing it I realised a fat idiot from Rotherham trying to emulate the finest defensive boxer of his generation was a pretty dumb thing to do but to be doing it to a guy who has shared a ring with the likes of Ali and Holmes was just plain wrong but I could not seem to help myself. I believe TSMR walked off at that point.

Earnie against Rowley, the biggest hitter in the history of the Heavyweight division against the biggest hitter in the history of 606. Epic stuff.

Probably by lying him gently on the floor and getting the ref to count to ten as he tries to get back to his feet. Then he gets disqualified after 1000 seconds for being helped up by help the aged.
Re: Argh isn't he nice..
I think you're underestimating me, obviously am reading between the lines a little but think it is safe to say Earnie looked impressed with the skills.
