Best golf course names
Hi! Blue monster is a stupid name for a golf course, so what's your favourite?
Mine's whistling straits, i feel it really captures the essence of that course.
Also love quail hollow, spyglass hill and putterham meadows(a municipal course in boston).

Matelot - great call, Cape Kidnappers is incredible! Looking over the cliff edges, or as close as I was brave enough to get is stunning. Amazing course!
How about Titirangi, superb course in NZ, architect Dr A Mackenzie.

Bernard Darwin used to call Royal Worlington and Newmarket "the sacred nine". I always thought that sounded pretty good.

The London Golf Club. Makes it sound like the only course for 7M people.

Re: Best golf course names
My claim to fame about mahogany run. Tiger was in St Thomas and I was on the course the same time as he was, al be it I was on about hole 2 and he was on about 16 or 17. Weird, as he was totally left on his own. Must have been great release for him not being hassled I suppose. It has a Bermuda triangle of 3 holes, 15,16 and 17 that if you parred you won a box of balls I think. No balls for me, tiger probably picked up 3 sleeves!!!

Not a course but the 11th hole on Gullane No 1 used to be called Thucket Knowe. That always amused me especially as it was a semi blind drive.

Simon's Golf Club - probably named after the owner? I wonder when Trump will build one called The Donald?
Valderama - always reminds me of the Colombian footballer.
Winged Foot - Isn't that just what a golf course looks like?

I reckon he'll re-name "the one of many arguments" the Auld Don to get his first name in and to trick Americans as to it's authenticity and heritage.

Re: Best golf course names
What's in a name?
Apparently quite a lot. I know of several clubs in my neck of the woods which have "rebranded" themselves.
Hatfield is now Essendon
Elstree is now Radlett Park
Stockley Park is now Stockly Pines
Do the new names sound better? Does it make a difference as long as the course is any good?

I'm sorry but that doesn't sound like a great name to me. Be honest, you only mentioned it so you could slip in your Tiger story later on

Somebody should name a course "The Office". Then when your boss / wife / partner rings you to ask where you are you could give them an honest answer

Be fair Dyna, they probably imported two, six foot, baby pine trees to make the name accuarate.

Re: Best golf course names
Maybe it was the juxtaposition between Mahogany (a wood) Nine Chins Surname (Woods) Wooden personality and where he often drives the ball (Woods)
That's a lot of wood in there, and we've not even started on the black book yet

No actually, let's stop.
The Old Course must have been a bit of a silly name when there were no others or was it "the Course"?

Lumber..jack it in. I pine for the good old days of a Two Ronnies sketch.
Anyway, to spruce this thread up, I've always liked the names Skibo Castle, Watson's Glen and Druid's Glen - don't know why but they seem so more evocative of golf to me than Bethpage or even Pebble Beach.

When you visit a newly opened burger joint or diner in the US they'll always have "the world famous this" or a "their signature that". And people buy it.Roller_Coaster wrote:I reckon he'll re-name "the one of many arguments" the Auld Don to get his first name in and to trick Americans as to it's authenticity and heritage.

Wonder if the black book beauties/beasts ever get a splinter when Tiger's at the 'elm of his boat, or acorn perhaps?
Edit: As reports suggest he was at the 'elm getting a woody with Lindsey Vonn all week during the Cadillac on his yacht moored ten miles from the course. Branching out . . . .
