Very well done to the Baron and Punter.
Clearly our day but still extremely unlikely to be our first win due to failings on day one. Stating the bl**dy obvious, we have to be at or near our best throughout the entirety of a match not just some parts of it.
Matters further hindered by Solanki and especially de Bruyn who appears totally unaware of match requirements.

Have we actually got an overseas player who will help!? Great to see him and Arun get runs today. Another draw looming though.

Re: surrey vs derbyshire county championship
Surrey doing their best to try anf force something today, approaching 150 put on this morning, can't see anything happening though. To be fair as much as we're annoyed this must have been a bit of a road of a pitch looking at our current score of 510/5

By all accounts we bowled poorly on day one. We' would have been in with a shout if we had bowled them out for under 350.

Punter run out for 191. Derbys using Gary Pratt as 12th man?

Ok, 65 ahead at lunch on the last day: we're not going to lose from here. So... maybe declare and see how it goes?? Only 3 of their players got beyond 21 in their 1st innings. If we make inroads and, especially, get Chanderpaul cheaply, you never know...

Re: surrey vs derbyshire county championship
If our tail allows, bat on for another 7 or 8 overs and try to get our lead up to around 120. Then declare in the hope of getting some early wickets and panic setting in for the rest of the Derbys batsmen.
All rather fanciful I fear but we might as well give it a go ....

Could do with a 3 wicket maiden from Tremlett or Meaker.....

Re: surrey vs derbyshire county championship
Seems odd to have declared 101 ahead. Neither here nor there. Surely better to have thrown the bat and tried to get another 20-30 ahead and put the pressure on. All rather academic now as they're 38-0.

kingdaveeagle re your 'neither here nor there' comment, the wonderful John Arlott got away years ago with the following:
"A change in bowling now for NZ. Coming on is Cunis (nb: for those too young to remember, first syllable of that name rhymes with 'fun'). Funny name 'Cunis' - neither one thing nor the other" !!!
Totally irrelevant to this game, but more amusing.

Re: surrey vs derbyshire county championship
Draw.
Some good to excellent individual performances but too much to do and not enough time after the disappointing showing on day one.
I take Carrot's point that the pitch "must have been a bit of a road" (well over 1,600 runs for 21 wickets) but after having both openers back in the hutch before 30 had been scored on the first day feel we should have done better than allow Derbys to kick on and exceed 450.

Heard Mark Steel do that anecdote on his tour, with a passable imitation of JA's voice. It was rather lost on good folk of Tunbridge Wells.
