Post by Colan (niner) Sun 11 Aug 2013, 12:12 pm

First topic message reminder :

Quite looking forward to this game, anyone know what sort of attendance is expected? I reckon could be closer than people think. A few of my English mates reckon 4-0 or 5-0 wins but just don't think that'll happen tbh, hopefully I'm not wrong! Wish game culd have been at Hampden so there would have been cracking atmosphere but I'm hoping Wembley surprises me although I'm not expecting it. I hope to see Bridcutt play, not seen too much of him but impressed by limited amount I've seen. And I hope Rooney plays too.

Ashley Cole, JT, Rio, Lampard, Joe Cole and Gerrard all in their prime, Rooney would have been great but got injured in an accident with Paolo Ferreira. Beckham still had it. The subs bench wasn't so inspiring (17 year old Theo, 19 year old Lennon, and 21 year old Downing, also had Jenas) but the team we had from 2003 to 2007 was fantastic.

Without a dodgy ref in Euro 2004 we would have won it. Fully fit Rooney in 2006? Who knows? We had the chance to be what Spain are now and all of those players are old/didn't fulfil their potential. It'll probably be another 3 years until the current crop reach that quality.

Or was I just a naïve teenager like you are???
Laugh

10 dear boy, 10. And the depth to that English team was rather poor, coupled with the fact that it wasn't a cohesive unit. As soon as Owen injured himself against Sweden, you knew it wasn't going to be our year, simply because we were reliant on a half-fit Rooney and Crouch. We were rubbish that tournament, and I always expected us to be.

2004 though I agree. Yes we should have won in 2004. And we probably would have done if Rooney hadn't broken his foot against Portugal.

I'll always remember the Lampard goal in that Portugal game. The way he swivelled on the spot. Gorgeous. notworthy

Ah, memories. Will never understand how England didn't win that game, and the tournament.

We didn't win because Sol Campbell climbed over JT to win the game and the ref mistook JT's white England shirt for a red Portugal one.

England need to win tonight to boost their chances of getting a kinder group at next summer's carnival in Brazil.

Mind you, I wouldn't mind if England did have a tough group, as they seem to do better at tournaments with a harder group than with an easier group.

That wasn't Scotland fans, that was rangers fans;) I'm one myself but many weren't Scottish if you catch my drift. Ironically Rangers fans always in trouble whereas Celtic and Scotland fans win worldwide awards for their fandom. Rangers fans in large don't support scotland, like England better half the time. Though an EPL club wouldn't bring as many fans in their wildest dreams for a match

England 4-1 Scotland.

England's perfect shape, and lovely to see Wilshere starting, even if it is only for 45 minutes. Possibly Welbeck down the left, with Rooney down the middle.

Wonder how many games it will take Roy to realise how dreadful Cleverley is. If Cleverley can't even make an impact tonight, against this dire opposition, and then still gets picked for the qualifiers, then there's really no hope.

Expecting a dire game but who knows what will unfold. 3-1 England, surely they can't **** this one up.

But Cleverley has the most important criteria when selecting a player for the England squad. His club is Man United. The same reason Welbeck gets in and now Zaha got in.

Shocking performance so far, seeing as they keep banging on about this basically is England`s best team.

Reminds me of an FA cup game. Underdogs score first through a plucky goal, then try and hang on. Unfortunately for Scotland, they haven't hung on. England would be 2-1 up if it wasn't for a rubbish offside call. If this friendly does anything, it reminds me of how crucial Wilshere is for next summer.

Wouldn't be surprised if it remained 1-1 now - the substitutions do tend to break up the flow of a game. Otherwise, England would cruise this.

Haven't heard the Scottish fans since Walcott scored. Whistle

England would cruise this.......?????? Must be watching a different game. Yeah, Wilshere is important but its like he's on a different wavelength completely to anyone else. He plays this short tippy-tap football but it goes nowhere because Rooney has such dire first touch. Yeah he penetrates but Scotland have coped pretty easily.

Sub's will mix it up, expect england will just snatch it & Roy to claim we are in great shape.....the usual rubbish.

The next goal (if there is one) will be key I'd imagine. England get it and they'll see it out.

Been an okay game so far.

Wise.

Anyway to me tonight is all about (for me) our performance (Scotland's) and I have seen a lot to be pleased about. Result is secondary for me - however this is the second match on the bounce where we have shown better organisation and composure and spirit.

Nah. I'm just having a pop at Liverpool. As much as Scotland's performance has been good to see it's as much down to England haven't got a player whose season has started yet. The majority of Scotland's squad have been back for two weeks now and Kenny Miller has been playing regular competitive football since March.
