How did Martinez get his shot?

Just looking at the undercard for this weekends fights from Atlantic City between Barker and Geale, and I note that Kiko Martinez is fighting Johnathon Romero for the IBF World Bantamweight title?

Is it a case that Carl Frampton isnt ready for a world title tilt? Or has all this switching promotional teams had an adverse effect. I know Carl has a re-ocurring injury but no attempt made from their camp to challenge Romero for his belt?

Scott Quigg on the other hand is going for the interim WBA, a step in the right direction if you ask me, and a hard test if records and reviews are to be believed, but again should the Hearns not have been attempting to challenge Romero for the IBF title??

Pretty weak oppostion in Martinez for Romero, especially when there are two great talents like Quigg and Frampton, hungry, dedicated and in my eyes ready for that shot...

Have the promoters on this side of the pond slept in? Are Quigg/Frampton not ready for this type fight? Or have other circumstances played a part in either fighter having a dig at Romero?

Have to remember that Frampton has Mcguigan managing him and If you ever wanted to see the sequel to TITANIC..then watch Frampton's career over the next few years...

Mcguigan is the biggest jerk in boxing..

Isn't Frampton promoted by Frank Warren now so not a lot the Hearns' could do about it, typical Warren matchup really in taking somebody backwards.

Scott Quigg is with the Hearns though - and they took an interim WBA shot instead of the actually IBF...

STC - Nope what I mean is they never even tried to persue this bout...that s the astounding thing.

Kiko Martinez loses to the Jackal but Kiko gets the shot at the IBF? Get the finger out Warren and Hearn...

It is stupid Martinez getting the shot first. But I agree with Truss to a point as with Frampton having been out for a good lot of months, they wouldnt have put him forward to fight for the title just yet.

Another few milkings in Belfast first. Would be funny if Martinez won the belt and he ended up having to face Frampton again. Would he be the same fighter that faced him first? After all, Frampton was the first to ko him. Bit of mental advantage there. Their last fight was a good one so I wouldnt mind seeing another repeat

Can we all please calm down a bit. Sheng has come back onto the boards and has said he wants to talk about boxing and behave himself. Until he proves otherwise can we take him on his word on this and give him a chance. None of the moderation team want nob sacks on the board so if someone starts acting like one action will be taken, but no action will be taken because en masse the rest of you get all pitchfork wielding and start hounding him like a bunch of News of the World readers attacking their local paediatrician.

Just annoyed that Kiko Martinez gets his cahnce at a legitimate world title and Quigg and Frampton are left dragging their heels over this side of the pond, seems unfair!

Would prefer Quigg or Framps as world champion so we can see more top class fights as I think the last 6 months of boxing has had very few highlights thus far....

Would love to have seen Geale v Barker with Quigg/Frampton v Romero on the undercard....

Suppose we dont always get what we want, but just frustrating, could see Frampton taking a few steps back now a la Brook....

Quigg is fighting for the (pretend) WBA title on the Haye/Fury bill, isn't he?

And Frampton is fighting an IBF eliminator so would imagine he'll fight for the title in his next fight.

Both fighters should have 'titles' soon. Don't see the problem.

Yeah STC suppose on down the line the guys will be amongst the honours.

Just cant see how the "pretend WBA" (as you say) and we all know the merry-go-roung of "title eliminators" is the place to be right now.

Framptons last win over Kiko Martinez was a great performance, and to se the defeated man get his shot first is just a little dis-heartening.

Havent heard much about it tbh mate. Frampton has always been headed towards the IBF route thanks to Hearn sitting on the head of the IBF's face, ala Warren: WBO.

It could be true about the ear, but he has had plenty of recovery time since his last fight. He cant be wasting anymore time with long spells between fights. He is the European Champion after a handful of fights so he needs to keep plugging down the road. I think he wont be long moving up to Feather when/if he wins any form of world strap. He is massive for a super bantam in terms of sheer size. The more I see Quigg these days too the more I am crawling up the fence with who I think wins. Good luck to both of them I say!

Automatically we are expected to be routing for our homeown fighter, but I can not deny that Quigg is a hungry determined wee boxing unit, and I think Frampton v Quigg would be one hell of a showdown!

Agreed good luck to both of them, and lets hope we all get that unification bout on down the road, perhaps even some barnstorming trilogies to tell the grandchildren about!

Quigg would murder Frampton right now IMO - in a year if Frampton is matched tough, he'll be ready but as it stands Quigg is the classier operator.

In relation to the OP, I guess they were looking for an easy defense? Martinez shouldn't trouble Romero. Maybe then it'll be Quiggs turn when Romero looks good.

Does happen though, even Floyd did it with Judah, despite Baldy turning him over. Is a tricky one though because after losing two on the spin to Taylor Hopkins moved up and took Tarver's light heavy belt off him in a very decent performance and win.

Quigg has a draw on his record and got put on his face by a powder puncher when he tried to fight on his back foot.

Frampton's record is picture perfect and you could argue that he has the better names even though he has fought about half the number Quigg has. I'm not saying Quigg wouldn't beat Carl, but to say hes a classier operater when he has shown so far that he can only fight one way is ridiculous. Frampton has fought aggressive, defensive and fought agressively off his back foot and is yet to go down.

Its all about whether Frampton has the strength and fitness to keep Quigg off, bit he has shown he can be just as strong going forward and has 1 punch KO power, even late in a fight. The way Quigg went down against Jamie Arthur is still a factor. If that punch can put him down and has him using the full 8 to recover then how would he get on with a full blown shot to the chin off Frampton.

Both guys have had their chins checked and so far Framptons looks the sturdier. Martinez caught him plenty and he didnt go down. Quigg got dropped by a feather fist.
