England v Australia 5th ODI
The series deciding ODI between England and Australia has just got underway. Steven Finn and Jonathan Trott are out with mild injury concerns, and Chris Jordan is making his England debut, and Luke Wright also gets an opportunity. For Australia, skipper Michael Clarke is fit and playing, and leggy Fawad Ahmed is also back.
Australia won the toss and are batting.

Australia are without the injured Shaun Marsh, and Phil Hughes gets a game.

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
First wicket for Jordan! Well done to him! Phil Hughes looking as comfortable as ever against the bouncing ball. Both Rankin and then Jordan with the wicket had him hopping about, admittedly he hasn't had much cricket but his weaknesses are still so apparent.
Finch is the man England need though. Looking dangerous.

Agreed. Can't see him not going to Aus with the Ashes squad tbh. Above Tremlett now I would imagine.Olly wrote:Been impressed from what I've seen of Rankin

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
Thanks for the thread, msp. I've already made the odd doubting comment about Jordan on an old thread. Very early days but justified at this stage with CJ going for 2 boundaries in his opening over.
I haven't seen very much of this series but - from what I have - Rankin has surprised and impressed me. He should be ahead of Tremlett (who had a shocker for Surrey in last week's CC match at Somerset) in the England pecking order.
And with that - Jordan has a wicket!!

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
Think England see Jordan as a bit of a project. Still only 24, nice pace and a nice strong action with the ability to bat a bit down the order; you'd think he looks the perfect cricketer for England in ODI's. Probably a bit too early for him as he's only had one good season, but worth a look in the final match.

Rankin did impress as an Ireland bowler. Don't really like his switch, nevertheless a good start to his England career.

Jordan - 2 overs, 2 boundaries, 2 wides and a wicket. The only thing missing from his old Surrey repertoire is a no ball!
JD - I'm sure you're right about Jordan. It was always thought at the Oval that there was a lot of potential with him. Unfortunately, the frustrations got too much for all.

I can certainly see why Jordan was dispensed with by Surrey. Into his third over and already a few loose balls that have been dispatched mercilessly. Like his upside though.

The initial look of Jordan suggests that he's worth a bit of investment. Has some fire in his bowling, though his sense of direction isn't finetuned as of now.

Jordan should look to pitch it up a bit more. Too much of the short stuff at the moment from him.

Australia again going after Tredwell and it again paying off. 17 from his second over. Looks like Wright will have to be entrusted with a few overs ....

I've never really understood why teams don't attack Tredwell more. I mean to me he only seems to have a change of flight/pace and that's it, doesn't turn it or anything. He's there to be taken to the cleaners if you're good enough

The Australians continue to target Tredwell, and he hasn't been able to find a way back in as yet.

Watson and Clarke are ripping into the England bowling. England need a wicket and need it soon.

something needs to be done about those bats they use nowadays, way too many mishits are going for six, surely time to regulate a little?

Hmm. Appeared that Tredwell had come back well - just 2 singles off the first 5 balls of his third over, then Watson wallops the last one for six!

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
trouble with England's team today is they only have one good bowler in Rankin, and one decent one in Stokes, the rest aren't really good enough for this level, and when they come up against good players it's showing...

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
point remains though, call me old-fashioned but I think players should have to hit the ball near the middle to go for 6... Watson's gotten hold of one properly (the first off Tredwell). Root on now, probably England's third best bowler today...Olly wrote:MFC language pleaseMad for Chelsea wrote:something needs to be done about those bats they use nowadays, way too many mishits are going for six, surely time to regulate a little?

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
Michael Clarke not rotating the strike all that well. A bit of relief that for England. But Morgan needs to change things around a bit, as of now its all too easy for the 2 Australian batsmen.
And here is Root replacing Tredwell.

Australia are never too far away from a massive collapse, otherwise 350 looks sureshot here.

Aus should get 400 here, think Morgan needs to gamble and bring back Rankin. Rubbish from Bops, taken for a couple more boundaries.

Clarke isn't scoring too many singles, but he has been picking up enough boundaries so that the lack of singles doesn't affect the tempo of the innings.

Think Morgan should give Wright a go. Bopara, Tredwell and Root have combined figures of 0-92 in 12 overs.

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
with each passing game englands selections suggest they're desperate to give aussie something to take home.
what a shambles.
maybe their view is that looking at the fringe players is learning something and getting more than the practice knock oz are getting.

Rankin has been excellent so far. Only 23 of his 8 overs. Jordan expensive, but he has added the wicket of Clarke as well.

Jordon now going at less than a run a ball which is bl**dy fantastic compared to most of his team mates (admittedly not Rankin who has really surprised and impressed me in this series).msp83 wrote:Rankin has been excellent so far. Very worrying though that with Australia 220-4, 11 of the final 15 overs need to be bowled by a combo of Stokes / Bopara / Tredwell / Root / Wright.

Just the 28 off Root's sixth and - I would presume - final over.

bbc score just showed an over going for 28.
blimey.
root was it? poor lad got exposed there.
if England picked some quality bowling he wouldn't have had to.
poor poor poor from the selectors.

Watson out at last.
he has come into form nicely and England have certainly helped him there with their choices. well played Watson.
this is probably 50 over what England can get now given their fragile state.

Very good point made by Trebs. Root shouldn't be having to fill in for as many as 6 overs.trebellbobaggins wrote:bbc score just showed an over going for 28.

Re: England v Australia 5th ODI
definitely not gf. eng were a first choice bowler short and they know it.
root for a few definitely but not 6.
looking at the wickets now he has probably given them the 30 extra that guarantees victory and it shouldn't have been that way. If the usual bbc muppets make Root the villain they can get lost.

Australia 284-8 as Stokes gets Watson and Johnson in the 45th over. We might get them all out a few overs short and yet still get hammered!

stokes the high point for England for sure. well him and rankin are genuine finds.
add them to what we have and it's stronger in all but spin where we are in trouble.
and yeah the score is way too high now.

5 now for Stokes.
Him and Jordan have impressed in patches, but Rankin has been the stand out all series. Tredwell's bubble has also been burst a little after a fantastic CT. The main lesson is we need 5 proper bowlers, can't afford to muddle through with 3/4.

So if we had to pick our 4 seamers for ODI's who would they be?
Anderson and Broad deffo's?
Finn/Rankin for one slot, and then Bresnan/Stokes/Bopara for the other, more all rounder slot?
