US Open Day 4 Thread
Slowly and steadily the Open is warming up, and we have some stunning matches and box office player representation on Thursday.
@Arthur Ashe
Vika and Serena in action 1 after another followed by
1]Nole vs Paul Henry Mathieu
2]Murray vs Matthias Bachinger [A Britain vs German match]
3]Eugenie Bouchard vs Sorana Cirstea [ A tough match for Genie, come on Genie show your powers]
@ Armstrong
Ivanovic followed by Isner in action, night session is dawn by Milos Raonic.
but no interesting match here.
@ Grandstand
4]Kei Nishikori vs Pablo Andujar [ this could be a banana skin match for Kei]
followed by Tsonga match followed by Kvitova match.
@ Court 17 we have
5] Sam Querry vs Garcia-Lopez [50-50 match in my view, but Sam might make it given his serve and home support].
Other good matches
6]Simone Bolelli vs Tommy Robredo [ could be a good match]
7]Philipp Kohlschreiber vs Michael Llodra
8]Marina Erakovic vs Elena Vesnina
9]Samantha Stosur vs Kaia Kanepi
10]Nick Kyrgios vs Andreas Seppi
[- Certainly the match of the day]
11]Fernando Verdasco vs Andrey Kuznetsov
May not be a great day for matchups but many stars in action, and we got Nick underlying the day against a veteran in Seppi, a very tricky opponent for Nick, can he continue the golden run which he left off in Wimbledon, I certainly would love to see him go deep into the tournament.

If coric can win today am I correct in thinking he will be the first 17 year old to make r3 at a slam since Rafa?

Re: US Open Day 4 Thread
Since Rafa, you also had the talented but slacking Latvian - Gulbis.
2007: Losing USO R4 at 18 (days away from 19) against Moya. 5-7, 2-6, 7-6(5), 4-6
2008: Tight 3 sets RG QF against Djoko at 19. 7-5, 7-6, 7-5
(In total he won 10 slam matches before 20 and only 16 since, and he's 25)
After that RG QF it took him 5 years to reach R32 again and 6 to reach a QF! A promising teen in 2007-2008, he's showing that talent and money still requires lots of work and dedication to perform consistently! (view biaised of course as I looked only at the slams - or has been injured for some time?)

Djokovic and Murray both made Wimbledon 3R a couple of weeks or so after their 18th birthdays. Tomic was 18 when he made the QF at Wimbledon but I can't think of anyone else who has come close.

Get the feeling Bachinger will be so happy that he got to 2nd round eh won't play so well today. Coric can certainly win and make the 3rd.
Surely Mauresmo won't last if Andy can't beat the Bach.

Look at the last para.
On the other hand there are some good matchups
Nick vs Seppi
Genie vs Christiea
Kols vs Llodra.
Yes otherwise not great matchups but its only the 2nd round bro.

This post is about nothing but there are too many double-barrelled Spainards about now.
Bautista-Agut
Riba-Madrid
Carreno-Busta
Granollers-Pujol (both of them)
Nadal-Parera (I semi-made that one up
)
Was Carreno-Busta the one who won all those Challengers last year? He's giving Paire a tonking at the moment.

That's Britain out of the men's doubles in the 1st round. Bad losses for Murray/Peers & Inglot/Huey considering they made the QF last year.

Yep, way beyond the age limit. 29, or 30 max. Same as clubbing in Ibiza.

Whatever was wrong with Novak in Canada and Cincy appears to have been remedied. He's timing the ball well again and looks much more light-footed.
Must he keep being asked to dance though?

Channelling his inner Ricky Gervais it appears... Djokovic is a different beast in the majors as are all the big 4.

I agree. He looks far better tuned in and better mentally, physically and technically. For once I'd agree with Greg and would say he must be favourite for the title.

For me he was favourite all along, even before the draw. Couldn't see how anyone else would be put ahead of him. His wonky Masters form was just a blip and he means business here.

I'll be impressed if Kyrgios dispatches Seppi in straight sets, he's not an easy opponent to wipe out. Currently 6-4, 7-6.
Robredo going life and death with Bolelli, back from two sets down and now a break up in the decider. He likes the comebacks these days, doesn't he?

I was reading something about Tommy and 5 sets a couple of days ago but can't remember what it was. Has he come back from 2 down more than anyone else in history?
Kyrgios.... What's the difference between him and Raonic (at that age)? Both have (had?) good serves, decent forehands, clunky movement and average backhands.

Re: US Open Day 4 Thread
What's funny about Murray's 2nd serve is that it's so bad it does it's job. I think some players are surprised at its lack of speed and placement and try to do too much on it. Murray leads 4-3 in a fairly "meh" match so far. Bachinger hit a worldie of a shot - a ridiculous cross court winner off a great Murray 1st serve.

Re: US Open Day 4 Thread
Krygios' movement and backhand are far superior to Raonic now, let alone when Raonic was ranked at about 300 at the same age as NK is now. He is a genuinely exciting tennis player. Raonic isn't.
Looks like Coric is going out. Led 3-0in the 3rd but looks like Estrella now has him beat.

Verdasco's departed - beaten in 5 by Andrey Kuznetsov (neither the brother of Alex Kuznetsov nor the brother of Kuznetsova).
This match is great fun. Exhibition tennis. Bachinger easily playing like a top 100 player, Murray using every shot in the book.

Probably about the FO last year, he came from 2 sets down to win in three consecutive matches. Only the second man to ever do it, first in the Open Era I think. And he did it again today

Janowicz was routed by Anderson - after winning the 1st set on a TB he lost the next 3 6-2 6-1 6-3. Goffin's a set and a break up against Sousa, Gulbis took the first set 6-4 v Thiem.
Venus v Errani is obviously in a 3rd set TB. Lucic is a set and a break up against Halep. Bencic has taken the first set v Kerber but the German will, at the very least, serve for the 2nd.
