No excuses really.

He actually ought to be challenging for the title with the amount that was spent.

normally i would agree, but he's in his first year taking over a shambles left by moyes. top 4 in first year is more than enough, should look to challenge the year after.
Back to blaming Moyes already, has Uniteds start taught you nothing? Lest we forget Moyes got Fellaini as his only major signing in the whole of last summer.

Surely it's shambles left by Fergie, after all Moyes didn't buy/loan enough to be able to call the squad his own?

moyes was given a whole summer with funds to spend and spent nearly 70 mil on players that we didnt need. he also alienated senior players like vidic who decided to leave during his reign. fergie got the last out of the squad he needed to and left a far bit money to spend and a clean slate to any manager coming in. im sorry but we won the league with fergies team so why should he be investing just because other managers couldnt get the same? the next manager might not have wanted the players fergie brought in

Those senior players needed shot of. They may have been senior players but they were no longer good enough. Its Woodwards job to close transfers, not Moyes, how long was spent Wee weeing about looking at Fabregas and Thiago last summer, before panic buying Fellaini at the last moment. Then a big name signing in Mata that really addressed none of Uniteds weaknesses.

When it was evident a rebuild was in order, 2 players in 12 months (1 of which was a luxury signing) wasn't exactly giving Moyes much support was it? Scapegoating Moyes kinda loses its lustre, when 4 games into his reign, LVG has yet to win any of 4 winnable games with more money and players than Moyes had put into his reign. The squad SAF left was filled with Rooney, RVP, De Gea and a bunch of players either on their last legs or mediocre. He got enough out of it to win a PL in which both Chelsea and City imploded under their own steam.

Phil Neville wrote:"Who are the centre-backs out there that United could buy today? There are not many.

"I don't think the quality is out there - we have seen that by some of the defending throughout European football. I was out every week last season scouting - we looked at Eliaquim Mangala, Thomas Vermaelen and Mats Hummels.

"Mangala - who ended up joining Manchester City for £32m - is young, raw, quick, but is the fourth choice centre-back for France. He has the attributes to go higher but for that money I thought he wasn't up it.

"Hummels is captain of Borussia Dortmund and they said he wasn't leaving. United tried for Vermaelen, who went to Barcelona, and ended up with Marcos Rojo who was probably second choice."

Funny that Cleverley was being slated for not moving, but it turned out he had. Guessing the loan move is so that he can still get his full Manchester United wage though with Aston Villa only paying a portion.

After everything Fergie did for the club he was more than entitled to bail out whenever he wanted. And I have to add that United won the title because they were the better side that season. Even in the CL it took a very dubious decision to prevent them from beating Real over the 2 legs.

His United wage is only 30k. I heard he wanted 60k.

That was Joses last season in charge wasn't it? As it tends to be with Jose, there was something very rotten at the core of that Madrid side, and Dortmund took them to the cleaners.

I'd heard he was demanding £80k from some teams, crazy that he thinks he should be getting more than he's getting at United.

Either way, since his first full season with utd Cleverly has been very poor. He showed in his debut season that he has the ability to be a decent midfielder. He needed this fresh start and I do hope he goes on to regain some confidence and do a good job for Villa. His wage demands, if reports are to be believed, are ridiculous but you have to wonder how much that is down to his agent. However when he comes out with stuff like 'la liga crowds would appreciate me' or 'its not my job to score and defend its my job to play 5 yard sideways passes' or things along those lines he doesn't help himself.

He's a tidy midfielder who doesn't stand out but at a team like Villa he'll be workmanlike enough to do a decent job.

He's not decent, he's terrible. In fact he's horrific on all levels. He's so bad, I'd rather watch Obertan run at pace with the ball past a player & watch the inevitable s**t cross, than watch wonky, spinal dystrophy boy attempt to play football. He can take his embarrassingly limited ability to Villa park & once the Villa fans watch those shocking sideways blind passes to the opposition, inevitable 0 goals & 0 assists stats come May, they will be desperate to him leave. Actually they will be pleading.

As a Villa fan, lets hope he does well.

Only time will tell how well he does.

He will start on the bench anyway.

Am sure Lambert will start with the same team that has played the previous league games.

Cleverly will do well elsewhere.

Needs to be higher up the pitch than he was for is and his confidence was absolutely shot last season.

I'm not saying Cleverley has no football skill but Villa wouldn't have gone for him if he played for Cardiff. He just runs about passing it no longer than 6 yards and can't read the game Sorry

What about Westwood? The young lad as looked a good player to me in that midfield. Cleverley will be sub as Sanchez still can't get into the starting lineup.

I expect Mignolet would still be first choice with Valdes as back up.

Mutually beneficial for the move, Rodgers has been looking for a better back up goalkeeper, Valdes needs a club to build up his fitness again and prove his worth, Mignolet can learn from Valdes and Valdes can get his name back out there.

Would be surprised if Mignolet was usurped or if Valdes stayed longer than the one year.

True

I like Westwood, works hard.

Would be surprised if Cleverly started next week. A s you say Sanchez is on the bench and is getting used to premiership life.
Will be ahead of Cleverly.

Richardson has looked pretty good so far, Senderos to.

Hutton had probably his best game in a Villa shirt v Newcastle.

Early days and all, but happy so far.

If Gabby & Weimann can bang a few more goals in and Bent when he comes on, then with Tekkers to come back we should be ok.

Defence has looked solid so far.

Keeping Vlaar was a big plus.

Cissokho has been decent to so far.

Also Cole who still think is a decent player to come.
Young Jack Grealish is a talent, so things are looking a bit more positive for tht Villa.

Looking forward to the Liverpool game.

Juventus want to sign Juan Mata in January. The Turin based club can't match the fee what Manchester United would demand, around £35m, and are hoping to swap Mata for Vidal.

Meanwhile a Rome based paper has stated AS Roma have granted Manchester United a fitness trail for Kevin Strootman in December, ahead of his proposed January move to Old Trafford. Strootman recently changed his agent to the same used by van Gaal and van Persie.

Indeed, Mata did score something like 6 goals in 7 games at one point, you won't get defensive work from him though. Thats a good reason why Chelsea lost 5-3 at home to Arsenal that year. Matic far more balanced than Mata.
