US Open Day 11 Thursday
Hope it's OK to get this going. Just the two men's quarters to think about today. While Fed and Berdych must be seen as favourites to win, it could be that an inspired Monfils could take out Rog, while Cilic is not without hope against Tomas.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
I haven't liked the way Fed has played but he's been winning. He must surely have too much awareness to beat Mon today, the more likely upset is Cilic he's beaten Berd in a slam this year where he was in control from the back of the court.
6-3 6-4 2-6 7-5 Federer
4-6 7-6 6-3 6-7 6-4 Cilic

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
This is an interesting match. Monfils has been strangely monotonous in his play this fortnight. Very consistent, lacking in flair. Like the antithesis of the normal Gael. The newfound consistency has seen him beat players he should beat, but could lose to. But I think sans the crazy athleticism, and power, against the big dogs, he probably loses games that he should lose but could win, or at least make things interesting.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
Dimi had 1/7 Bps while Monfils had 3/4. Old Man is bound to throw in bad games, but if they come in third/fourth, he should be able to pull this one.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
I've been interested to see how cleanly Federer has been able to drive the backhand return of serve, even against Groth. This is quite a change for him, stepping up from chipping back or high error rate driven returns.
Monfils will challenge that innovation with a bigger and better directed serve. If Federer maintains this standard it'll be very encouraging for his chances because it allows him to gain the ascendency early in return points, reducing the rally length which is crucial to (i) deprive Berdych of time, and (ii) prevent Djokovic making it a lung buster.
Nice to see the guy still being creative at 33, I'm starting to wonder whether retirement will eventually be forced not by his own age, but by his daughters.

I expect the Old Man to slice quite a bit v Monfils, similar to Granollers match.

I think that 5-8 bracket is as high as Cilic will get. He's not good enough to beat the big 4 consistently but I do think he's playing his best tennis yet this season.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
Berdy needs an older out of shape guy to dictate his serve with, Cilic ain't that man. Berdy don't wanna play Fed any more now that he's beating the rest of the top 10

He's overrated. He was worse than this playing Klizan round 1/2, he's just inevitably showing himself being 1 dimensional.

So Berdy at about 70% and Cilic at about 85% play ability.

I've rarely seen Berdych look more robotic. I guess the wind just destroys him; high toss, no mobility of foot or mind.

The only thing to help Berdy now is if Cilic falls over on his ankles. Can't rely on himself to do the work

+1 so much talent but never believed in himself , Goran is doing wonders with him, a coach who can understand the exact dynamics of his game.
Cilic should have been punished by Goran for not turning up in 4th and 5th set at Wimbledon against Djoko after leading 2 sets to 1.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
Simon Giles would have been upset with himself for losing a close match to Cilic.
Before Cilic match, simon and his team might have been laughing as follows
You already beat David Ferrer and next up is a pony [Cilic] on whom you 4-0 on h2h stats and Berydch is no different to Cilic and hence sail to semi's where he is facing old Fox RF against whom he always found it easy so finals was up for grabs where he might be facing a battered Murray/Djoko/Stan/kei and hence a Slam dream be realized.

Berdych's outfits are always so bold and out there. Really no idea whether it's Blind Sunday School teacher or Avant Garde fashion house.

It's funny, Mac is still eligible for a WC into the USO whereas Roddick is not.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
For WTF I guess the first 7 players more or less will qualify given they are well ahead of the rest.
So the last place will boil between
8]Dimitrov
9]Murray
10]Tsonga
and 11] kei Nishikori [who is said to make huge gains here]
Unless Rafa withdraws I now believe Murray will not make it to WTF.

Mac's still registered with the people who do the drug testing whereas Roddick isn't. You have to be registered for 3 months to play at a major or something. It's the reason why Roddick couldn't play alongside Mardy Fish (on his comeback) at the tournament this year.
