US Open Day 11 Thursday
First topic message reminder :
Hope it's OK to get this going. Just the two men's quarters to think about today. While Fed and Berdych must be seen as favourites to win, it could be that an inspired Monfils could take out Rog, while Cilic is not without hope against Tomas.

Gilles Simon at AO'11? No idea what seed he was but that's the only one I can think of. Don't think it could be Haas at RG'09.
Fed serving to stay in the match...

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
you are half right. it was Del Potro.
But not at 09. At 09 he was never 2-0 down in the match, only 2-1 down.
It was at FO 2012.

has anyone got a good stream.
we have cable TV, but we moved house a week ago and the cable TV man has not turned up to our new house yet!
I did swear off live streams for virus reason, but this is getting too tense

How did he save those two match points is a mystery, but he is still surviving, we have seen him play light out tennis save match points on 4th from set down and lose in the decider.

Can't believe he saved them, holy crap. So glad I stayed up for this, La Monf doing a great job under pressure as well.

Monfils really making the match very interesting 2 double faults again to gift the game and serve, well played MOnfils Fed needed that badly

yeah, but whilst those last two points will play on him, 9 DFs over four sets is not awful when you consider how much Monf is putting on his serve

2 Wimbledon should come to mind, 2008 Final vs Rafa and 2014 finals vs Djoker.

Monf woulda taken a fifth set shoot out three hours ago... but you'd think there's a part of him that feels this should have been done in four.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
What a dig. If he wins this'll be yet another match for the 'Federer puts his fans through the 5-set wringer' reel.
Good thing for La Monf is that he's serving first in the decider.

Actually Fed believed Monf should have taken it in 4 but not Monf, twice he did 2 doubles on serve to give break points and break to Fed.

I actually think its good for Fed on this match, coz Fed is very nervous on serve and he would like to take the first shot on Monf's serve as a reserve break, had Fed serving first he might crumble under nerves.

Quite similar to the Wimby final where Djoko was all over the place on his serve from 4th set onwards, but you felt he could win it just by breaking Fed at the right time anyway. That almost happened here but this time Fed saved the MPs.
I wonder what'll happen now? More Monfils gifts, or...?

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
The joy on Lydian's face might have dropped a bit seeing turn of events last 2 sets, but Lyd don't worry history says Fed when saves match points on 4th set from 2 sets down he wins the 4th set in a spectacular fashion but loses on the 5th set.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
See thats why I told u its better for Fed to not serve first, Monf didn't recover from the 4th set loss and looked extremely nervous serving first, the result would have been same had Fed served first.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
Serving second is helping Fed a lot the pressure is mounting on Monf and his mind is not free enough to serve to his fullest potential, I won't be surprised if Fed takes advantage of it and go double break up.

Fed let the oppurtunity to go double break up, Monf was under immense pressure last serve.

The big difference was Monf double faulting at will Silver

Can somebody confirm me whether it rained today or yesterday night in USO? coz the court which looked lightening quick in the previous matches looks very slow , humid and heavy, one of the reasons I guess Fed struggled a lot.

Pressure is so high for Poor Monf he couldn't even move for the last shot.

This match was a struggle for both players, certainly not of high quality but Fed fans would take it nevertheless I guess.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
Looks like Fed will likely survive now but boy that was too close.
Fed looked very nervous throughout most of the match. Monfils was the better player the first four sets - though not by much - so Fed must feel happy to have survived to at least get to the fifth.
The first MP, Monfils could have had him - I already saw the match done there.

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
Yeah, it's been a really odd one. Tough to describe for people who didn't watch it! Very topsy-turvy with some crazy shots but so inconsistent. Monfils has been all over the place at times but he would've beaten a lot of people today, decent comeback from Fed especially MP down...twice.
Not quite done yet but thanks for posting here with me IC![Smile](https://2img.net/i/fa/i/smiles/icon_smile.gif)
No heartache please!

Tell you what, this match has highlighted exactly why Monfils shouldn't even bother with a coach. Absolutely nothing in the box would have helped that fourth set performance, or the tankjob in the fifth.

Tell you what though, great tournament from Monfils. He's really looked a different player this fortnight, I wonder if he'll kick on from here? So glad Fed won though, haven't wanted him to win that badly for a long time!

Can't describe the feeling on this match really, feel sorry for Monf but at the same time its all his mistake to have poured the double faults like water falls in the 4th.
A good tournament for Monf, a bit unlucky on the 1st match point, but hopefully he will learn from it.

I was advocating from the start Monfils is a different player and not to take it easy, people didn't even give a chance for him against Dimitrov

Amazing, though he did need a bit of help from Monfils. Fed was not at his best the first four sets and on that first MP Monfils could have had him. Plus all those DFs from Monfils - exactly when Fed needed them most - which is fine by me I supposelaverfan wrote:Amazing escape for the Old Man.![]()

Re: US Open Day 11 Thursday
If Monfils played the match of his life and lost, think of Davydenko, Berdych, Tipsarevic.
10 years from now, Monfils will end up the same category as Falla, Haas, Acasuso, et al.
Nadal (not to be spared) has similar ones in his closet with Kendrick, Petzschner, Haase, Del Potro, et al.
As CoolPixel says, in the end what counts is a cold hard win, no matter how you got there.
(I see shades of 2009 USO Federer back, in the Umpire arguments).
