Match Commentary Thread
A thread to provide commentary on matches at tournaments which don't have their own threads (as I'm watching Ferrer v Murray).

Re: Match Commentary Thread
Murray looks up for this. These last 3 weeks will tell us a lot about Murray. Does he still have fight in him or have injuries and success caused him to lose that fire?

Re: Match Commentary Thread
Punishing start. Murray will feel he should have done more with two 30-30 situations. A couple of limp errors.

Lovely point!! Thought he'd made an arse of it but that was a cheeky volley.

Re: Match Commentary Thread
Ferrer making a lot of forehand errors so far. Murray's first serve looking devastating (as it did last week for a set). Will be interesting to see if there is a drop off again.

Superb returning down the line from Ferrer.

Re: Match Commentary Thread
Ferrer breaks and is just returning the better at the mo whilst Murray looks restless.

Re: Match Commentary Thread
Shocker of a game really from Andy. Took the pace off the last two first serves only to miss easy forehands off short returns.

Re: Match Commentary Thread
That is an infuriating thing for me about Murray. He has this knack of getting broken and breaking straight back. How about getting the break first Andy and maintaining that advantage?

He also has the reverse annoying trait of getting the break and handing it straight back.

Ah, good thread; I was always wondering why this was on the random tennis news thread.

Alluding to a point made a week or so ago, someone's destroyed his serve. It was wobbly during 2013 but he hits far more doubles than he used to.

And in the blink of an eye and a shabbier than shabby service game from Murray the first serve goes to David Ferrer 7-5.

It will be a long way back from here and a loss for Murray will leave him in ninth in the race to London with two tournaments left to play for him.

Pretty impressive from little David. I do not know if he can keep it up for another 1-2 hours, but he does not look like yesterday's match had any negative effects on him so far.

Where's a slice? Where's some variety? Murray playing like Ferrer; boring and predictable, just ball bashing.
Trying to hit hard doesn't constitute attacking tennis.

That 3rd BP was poor. Yes it looked like the return was going long but there's no excuse for taking anything for granted. Play to the calls.

Re: Match Commentary Thread
Murray is just trying to hit harder. It's fine if they go in but it's hardly clever and there'll be unforced errors that will seem inexplicable but are actually caused by lack of variety.
In 2007 I'd not believe I'd have been saying that in 2014 Murray looks a very limited player.

Dunno what he can do. The drop shot would be stupid because he rarely executes it well and even if he did, Ferrer would be on it. Also, Ferrer's alright when dealing with sliced balls. Could he come in more? I'm not sure.

Good break there, now hopefully he can have a comfy hold of serve rather than the slogfest seen earlier.

A sloppy service game from Ferrer and Murray breaks to lead 2-1.

Re: Match Commentary Thread
He's got such easy power on his forehand, its hard to understand why he was tipping-tapping it around in the first set (and still missing!). The strategy is now better albeit I agree with BB it should also be accompanied by some variation. Notable that as soon as Murray shows signs of over-powering him Ferrer plays an extremely poor game.

Re: Match Commentary Thread
A bad game there from Daveed but in general a lot of resilience and determination from him (as ever)
Still good enough even at 32 to beat anyone on his day (except the Fed ..... although he must get a win one day ....surely ....?). I wonder will Andy be such a tough proposition at the same sort of age ....?

Go short, long, come in, stay back. Just do different things. So far every shot he plays with time is topspin, deep. Tedious. The Special Juan wrote:bogbrush wrote:Murray is just trying to hit harder. Perhaps but the tame start to the game set the trend.

I suppose he could also trying drawing Ferrer in and passing him.
Didn't think this watch would be your scene either

Murrays going through the motions...again.
Where's the exciting Murray from 2011/2012??
Does he even want to make the Tour finals is the question.. Perhaps he's happy to sit outside the top 8 for the time being

I don't know but he doesn't seem comfortable on his forehand, 1 decent FH followed by tame. He CERTAINLY won't keep holding serve.
