Who stands out as the greatest pure boxer ever. The answer might surprise you.

ALEXIS ARGUELLO

Ali does not even make top 10.

Leonard close second.

Joe Louis for me, many people say Louis lack of quick foot movement to be a fault in his style, I agree but Joe was a master of distance and deception. Louis used his footwork to put subtle pressure on his opponent’s and then would take small steps back to draw his opponents into him. By pressing forward he would close the distance and then by stepping back Louis would appear vulnerable, but when his opponent’s moved in they were setting themselves up for his lethal counterpunches. Joe Louis hit you twice as hard as you were coming in.

Joe Gans also deserves a mention, he was very skilled and mastered timing and distance imo these are the 2 most important attributes of boxing.

You could say the greatest boxers are the ones who don't have a defining attribute which they rely upon. Say guys like Hagler and Hollyfield. They have a blend of decent skills/attributes which they exploit to there full extent to get the win.

Or you could just say Ray Leonard. He was a master at everything but sometimes fought the wrong fight, or round.

Ray Leonard is probably the best candidate for anyone under 70. Not sure many have seen Ray Robbo in his early welter days.

A motivated Toney was a fantastic all rounder as well.sometimes wonder if he had a been a tad more motivated, would he have been one of the real greats.
