US Open - Day One Empty US Open - Day One

Post by CaledonianCraig Tue 30 Aug 2016 - 3:04

The final slam of the season is under way and Djokovic takes to the court as he looks team re-establish his dominance in the sport.

In an early match on Day One Kyle Edmund is off to a flier and leads Richard Gasquet 6-2 4-2 but can he cement a famous win?

Discuss Day One here....

Hmm, this match looks done. Edmund up 62 62 and Gasquet looks to be suffering in the heat. Would be a fabulous win for Kyle.

Gasquet not done yet. He breaks serve early in the third set. Cilic looks well in control of his match against Dutra Silva and Martin Klizan (No 28 seed) is in trouble.

US Open - Day One Empty Re: US Open - Day One

Hm. I posted during the French Open about how Gasquet gets consistently to about R4, but has never been to a final or lost in the first round for 5 years. He seems to have a consistent level.

https://www.606v2.com/t63245-french-open-day-8 At 12:15, more detail on this if anyone wants to see.

In the last 5 years, Gasquet has only lost once even in the second round, and that was narrowly 10-8 to Kyrgios who went on to the quarter final. Perhaps a loss to Edmund here would also represent a loss to an up and coming youngster only outside of the seedings (and hence a R2 opponent for Gasquet) because his ranking hasn't caught up with his suddenly improving level.

Would still be a bad result for Gasquet though.

Whoeever win this looks like a superb opportunity in round 2 as winner of Gasquet-Edmund gets Lacko or Escobedo. Once of those I have never heard of, and the other I have barely heard of, so is it reasonable to suppose that's winnable. R3 Isner, R4 Djokovic suggests we shouldn't get overexcited about this section of the draw, but a R2 win would be a boost to Kyle's prize money, rankings and confidence.

If this goes to five sets, who would you fancy. Edmund may have what it takes to find an extra gear after losing two sets. Would be inetresting to see.

Edmund seals a surprisingly comfortable 6-2 6-2 6-3 win over No 13 seed Richard Gasquet. What a win for him and gives him a great opportunity to go deep into the tournament.

Brutal display from Edmund. Whenever he hit a forehand with intent Gasquet had no answer. Kept the unforced errors in check and never really looked in doubt. Impressive.

Wow, it was 1-3 a minute ago, I write one email, and it's 6-3. Yikes.

Not sure if Gasquet will do a presser for a round 1 match? Would be interesting to hear his thoughts.

Lacko and Escobedo at one set all.

Edmund, could be very good. Particularly if you imagine the landscape in five years time

Last time Gasquet lost in the first round at a slam was the 2010 French Open. To a certain Mr Andy Murray.

2008 I make the last time Gasquet lost in the first round to a player who wasn't a seed. (Tommy Haas US Open.)

So he just doesn't do defeats to lowly ranked players in early rounds of slams, this is quite the surprise, but aside from the fact that you have to have an offday sometimes, maybe Edmund is going to be top 20-30 by next year once he puts a good run of form together.

Willander says Gasquet may be feeling the back.

Still think he would have struggled today, Edmund played very well.

Istomin playing a bit better than the score line suggests. Been broken from 40-15 up twice in a row.

Nadal coughing up phlegm on court.

Since I posted that last message Istomin started playing like a mug.

Tiafoe 2 sets up on Isner....open up the draw for Edmund if he wins!

Decent win for Nadal, Istomin had the power to cause concerns for the Spaniard.

Muguruza in a real back and forth match. At times it hard to see which player is the major champion

Do Eurosport not have full rights to this event in the UK? Just trying to think of any conceivable reason why they are showing Haase v Duckworth which is possibly the least interesting match currently on!

Congrats to you Britons.  Good win for Kyle.

Fritz just tied his match with Sock at two sets apiece, having been two sets down initially.  I will watch some of that match I think.

Sock breaks early and then after some struggle holds, so now 3:0 and one would expect him to win from here.

Djokovic safely through, but he dropped a set. H e looked very unimpressive in the first couple of sets. I was not able to see the last two sets, so he may have improved thereafter - the score was quite one-sided in those sets.

Took an early MTO as well but seems he was playing a bit better towards the end. Long way to go yet but obvious early question marks.

On Novak it is fair to say that a dropped set against Jankowicz is not the sort of form of the first half of the year so question marks remain and that extra set in testing conditions doesn't help. If he is in decent form I'd expect him to up his game from here and win matches with more ease.
