World of Warcraft
Seeing as the COD guys have their own thread I thought it was about time there was one for what is frankly THE best game of all time.
At present I'm levelling a goblin hunter (beast mastery and with a raptor pet) but normally I play a gnome frost mage.

Brilliant, I tried the worgen ones first which are a bit on the emo side but the goblin ones were just fantastic, great blend of humour and plot in there.
Which server are you on and what do you play?

Any of you managed to take down a whale shark on Vashj'ir?
I lol'd something rotten as a few guys took one on and it one shotted each person in turn.

Re: World of Warcraft
I perosnally haven't but many of my guildies have (i'm not really one for the achivements to be honest).
IIRC it revolved around our druid aggroing the beast and going into aquatic form to kite the boss (who was snaredd, slowed, chains, etc) while some ranged nuked him down.

Guild are going to Blackwings descent tonight, depending on who turns up should be pretty fun. Magmaw, Onmitron and Maloriak (spelling) should be a breeze, the blind dragon should be fun only had a couple of attempts of him/her so far!

Could someone give me a small brief into the game?

I was playing this a few years ago and it was far too addictive. There's no way to be any good at the game without putting in some serious time. Obviously the raiding and PvP are the most exciting but to be at a decent level in this, the hours that you have to put in are just crazy. I stopped playing about three years ago just because it wasn't good for me.

I was exactly the same. I came into the game quite late (after the BC update) but i sure made up for it, i was probably putting in over 45 hours a week into into which was far too much.
I have been clean for 215 days now and dont plan on getting hooked again

I just didn't like the "You have to be here at this time and you have to organise your life around us. You must come prepared with all of this stuff which take hours to grind etc etc"
A superb game but it's highly destructive to people who play it a lot.

Yeah that annoyed me too with the constant moaning if someone made a mistake or the messages regarding addons that everyone needs to have. Now i dont mind having an addon or too if it helps but not when they want dozens which slow up the game.
One guild i was in had a 3 strikes rule that if you wasnt online at a certain time then you wouldn't be allowed to join the raid for a month

Totally, I'm a social player and tend to enjoy the journey of getting to lvl 85 rather than the raiding and gear snobbery that goes on once you are 85.
Re: World of Warcraft
Console gaming fits my life perfectly now. I can turn on and turn off when I like, there are no dungeons or anything like that that tie me up for over an hour and I don't have to pay an extortionate monthly subscription to play.

Though I must admit, I was damn good at that game back in the day. Undead Lock with crazy damage. I regularly found it fun to pull the boss off the tank to show off :P
Think we were the fourth of fifth guild to finish a lot of the instances in BC and before then, we were consistently at the top.

Re: World of Warcraft
I genrally do raids and heroics with 6 mates outside of the game so it's always a better laugh when things don't go right running them.
when i first purchased cata I put a lot of hours in to get up to speed with my main, and then got my alt up to.
But i've slowed down now with the mrs getting a bit sick of me spending all my time on there when i had finshed work.so i'm down to 2 hours a night now.But i have gotton more and more in to Warcraft lore and am reading some good stuff.

It's good to go back to geek mode sometimes.I still enjoy going to Games Workshop every couple of weeks to catch up with a few old mates, still do a bit of painting in there too.
It's also handy because it's next door to my local comic book shop.

Having two young kids and a wife meant that I could never devote time for hardcore raids.
Re: World of Warcraft
With the birth of my son a few weeks ago i've not been able to touch the game. I'm seriously considering dropping it altogether right now, although i was never in one of those hardcore guilds, prefering the relaxxed atmosphere of a sensible casual guild that had fun and "raided semi-seriously"

With the 4.1 patch that is due soon, its going to make it a lot more friendly towards people who don't get the time everyday to run raids and heroics to get you're daily valour points over the course of seven days instead of only doing them in one day.

Re: World of Warcraft
Had a break for a couple of months off this (tried Minecraft and a bit of FM11) but am back full swing into it.
Usually play frost mage but am trying a paladin for the first time.
Any tips?
Just hit lvl 40 (so can get plate now), currently I'm retribution spec (heal on dual spec), what talent tree should I go for and items I should be looking for along the way?
Gone BS & mining as profs.

Re: World of Warcraft
I've just made the decision to stop playing WoW a few weeks back.
I was a Human Shadow Priest on the Twilight's Hammer server, 3rd best priest on the realm in terms of gear at the time of leaving.
Was only really in to the raiding side of things, and we had cleared all but Sinestra on heroic mode when I stopped, so we were pretty successful.
Love the game, and so addictive, but had to stop playing as it was just taking up too much of my time, having to dedicate 2 full week nights to raiding. Shame really, as my dps was huge!

I could just never dedicate the time regulary for hardcore raiding, I tend to get to lvl 85 and then get bored and start again!
Re: World of Warcraft
Yeah some tend to be like that, whereas I have always been one for getting the best gear possible and doing the most healing/damage possible!
I played holy spec during the burning crusade and wrath of the lich king, but went shadow during cataclysm and started dishing out plenty of damage!
I suck at pvp though, always have.

Re: World of Warcraft
Still managing to stay away from WoW, despite a massive yearning to start playing it again!!
I just can't justify the amount of time I used to spend on it any more, but man do I miss it! Had some great times on there.
Still in touch with a couple of old Scandinavian guild members of mine via facebook.
What is your highlight of your WoW 'career'? If we leave raiding to one side, as there were plenty of highlights there, the most fun I had was being part of an 80-strong group that stormed all of the horde cities to do the achievement for killing all of the horde leaders. That was pretty surreal seeing so many people racing along on mounts in the days before flying mounts were introduced to Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. Great fun.

Re: World of Warcraft
Not played seriously in just over 4yrs and not touched the game at all in 3yrs, wasn't the time I couldn't devote anymore it was the fact the game was going downhill in to many ways.
The later mid to later end of TBC was becoming a joke that it was time to stop playing and move on or wait for something else to come on the horizon.
Highlights outside of raiding were mostly PvP orientated though kiting the odd monster back to SW and letting it wreak havoc before having to get a server reset was always fun.

When you say it had become a joke, in what sense do you mean?
Ha yeah I've seen plenty of monsters kited into SW and cause chaos, always fun.
Still, for me though, can't beat getting a huge raid party and tearing through the opposition factions cities killing everything in sight, proper buzz!

Re: World of Warcraft
What latter became known as welfare epics had a detrimental effect on the game.
They seriously messed up PvP by going Arena centric after Vanilla making all other forms pretty redundant.
Raid bosses starting to become generic with creativity starting to lose focus.
The inclusion of dailies was a incredible lazy move to cash in on a time sink for various reputations.
There are other points but been a while since I played so those were the ones that came to the front first.

Re: World of Warcraft
I'm not a fan of dailies, and they do tend to repeat the mechanics of raid bosses at times.
Don't get me started on epics...surely the point would be that only the best players get them, and they're rare, as the name suggests. So annoying seeing tonnes of noobs running round in full epics and thinking they were the business.

Re: World of Warcraft
They over inflated the game with Epics resulting in blues becoming almost obsolete and the tiering system they had invented becoming a joke. Couple that with some of the most inflated stat increases Ive ever seen it become a pale shadow of what had been quite a good system in vanilla.

Re: World of Warcraft
I still think hitting 60 for the first time has to be the best feeling after the long grind back in vanilla. Also the first time I flew over Orgrimmar was pretty epic.
I do miss the friendship of the old realm find a group system. With the introduction of dungeon finder there is'nt the same life in the capitol citys that they used to be. Everyone seemed to know each other back then.

Re: World of Warcraft
Just made me remember another major gripe I had before I left and that was cross realm PvP that eventual encompassed grouping (I'd left by that stage). One of the most stupid and ridiculous ideas ever to come from Blizzard.
Completely ruined PvP and the point of actually having a realm.

Agreed. We had some cracking banter with the Alliance lot that we used to consistently beat on out old server. Hardly ever used to see them after they introduced cross-realm.

Re: World of Warcraft
Alliance always sucked at PVP, crazy.
The cross realm dungeons and pvp was rubbish, I agree. Made the only sense of community inside a guild, really, as opposed to a realm community.

Re: World of Warcraft
I always prefer playing as Alliance as I prefer the starting lands and cities that they have (hate Ogrimaar and Undercity) but agree that at PVP horde win 80-90% of the time.
