ESAA English Schools Championships
The English Schools Championships got underway in Gateshead yesterday with a load of track heats and field event finals. The Senior Girls Triple Jump final saw the highest quality of competition, both Naomi Reid and Ahtollah Rose went over the previous championship best. The comp was decided in the last round where Reid's leading mark of 12.79m was beaten by Rose's 12.88m leap. Kike Oniwinde has emerged as a developing talent in the Javelin this year, and she won the Senior Girls title ahead of Freya Jones - who's been high up in age group rankings for a while. Oniwinde threw 47.08m while Jones posted 45.51m. Speculation has mounted that Clovis Asong could take Chris Clarke's championship record of 47.17 in the Intermediate Boys 400m - he looked very comfortable clocking 47.67 in his heat, just a shade off his PB. Several starlets of schools athletics, such as Charlie Grice and Emelia Gorecka are in action today.

Pedant corner - Clovis Asong is actually in the Intermediate age group not Senior (the Record you quoted is the relevant one to beat though).

So much going on at the Champs, I'll pick out a few highlights - Jordan Kirby-Polidore wins the Senior Boy's 200m in a class time of 21.49. Steven Turnock wins the Senior Boys Javelin with a PB - 65.48m to beat Joe Dunderdale (a big shock). Jessica Judd wins the Inter Girls 1500m, some were talking up Cumbrian Abbie Hetherington's chances in this race but I don't think anyone's going to challenge Judd in the junior ranks, Judd wins by six seconds - 4:21.15. Sean Molloy wins the Inter Boy's 800m with a swift 1:52.85. Sophie Papps breaks the Champs record in the Inter Girls 100m - 11.78 to win there. Clovis Asong breaks his PB again in winning the Inter Boys 400m - 47.39, but is short of Clarke's record. Jivendra Singh wins the Junior Boys 800m in 1:58.80 - 2 mins the benchmark for that age group. Charlie Grice wins the Senior Boys 1500m with 3:53.70 - looks like he was given a good race by Cameron Boyek - 3:54.32 in 2nd.
A big thanks to Nick How and Andy Barber of England Athletics for their prolific updates today!
