Welcome Jimbo, We normally have a few fans on hear but its all quiet. Must be out on the fizz on a Friday night.
We need to win two of finally three games to qualify and to be honest I had this one down as a our defeat on paper but Davis and Roy are in good form so you never know.

I'll be around enough for sporadic posts.
Looking at the Hampshire bowling, it's hard to see who we could target or get away easily.

Might have to go after spin, which is very dangerous with the quality Hampshire have on show.

I've been on the Middlesex thread
I'd say you par would be 155 ish, looks like we'll be below it. If we bowl well we will have a defendable target at least.

Re: Surrey Hampshire T20
All depends on one of our openers to get a big score, lose early wickets and we will lose.
Thats the first game when Afridi hasnt got a wicket, perhaps he will produce the goods with the bat

Afridi just dropped as well could have been four down although apparently that last one was more of a world class stop thyan a dropped catch apparently

A poor performance from us, suppose we have already done the hard work in previous games. Im sure we will still get a home draw

Good and important win for us. Should help the old net-run-rate too.

Re: Surrey Hampshire T20
You are one of the teams where home advantage is very important, your pitch is perfect for Dimi and the spinners and hard for other teams. If you get a home draw (which I think you will) you will be massive favourites to make finals day. As for Surrey, another win and an even better performance. The batsmen didn't get off to a flyer but never let the RR drop too much, in fact we upped it after the powerplays which was impressive. The bowling was great (so I hear) and shows how important it is to start well and get early wickets. I'm still not entirely convinced with middles overs bowled by Meaker, Batty and even the Gaffer as they don't seem like wicket takers so a good start is vital. Certainly it is nice to have Tremlett, Nannes and Arafat to call on!
Le Roi's fielding to run out Dimi was absolutley superb, what a star!

Re: Surrey Hampshire T20
I think, and I might be wrong, that if we beat Kent in the next match we will qualify for the QF's. Unfortunately we have a CC match against them first which completely upsets the momentum and mindset of the players. I really don't agree with putting the 4 day games in the middle of this tournament, how can a team be fully focused on an important Championship match 2 days after a T20 game and the day after they are playing a very important T20 against each other. Crazy.

Also, we are playing (including today) 18 days out of the next 27 in 3 different competitions. Excessive?

Re: Surrey Hampshire T20
It was a bizarre T20 game after Surrey posted their total. Even at 9-4 Hants weren't anything like out of it since Afridi was having one of those days of his. One of his shots went so fast to a fielder 10 yards inside the rope that they couldn't even run a single. Once he went and the Hants middle order forgot how to run 22 yards safely, the final few overs were an odd anticlimax: very rare for a T20 game.
But it was a great game with lots for everyone: some audacious stroke play but no one reached 50; a pitch that gave help to top quality bowling, Mascaranhas & Tremlett in particular; some great catches, a brilliant run out from Roy and some missed chances too.
And the result helped

Re: Surrey Hampshire T20
Contrary to Depressed's suggestion, I was not out on the fizz tonight but at the Oval supporting our boys and, gosh, they deserved it!
The first half of the game didn't look so good for us. Hants are clearly a good bowling and fielding sign. They seemed very organised and self assured. Cork and Mascarenhas are a couple of wily old foxes with the ball. Dimi suckered Roy into a leg side clip which saw him heading for the hutch whilst people were still taking their seats. Having started well, Dimi was kept on and bowled his four overs in one spell from the off. I liked that as I think we sometimes mix up our bowling too much and overcomplicate it.
Cork bowled two at the start and two at the death. He was too smart at the end for Arafat who had been pushed up the order for some quick closing runs. Cork took the pace off the ball with the result that two or three times Arafat simply ended up pushing the ball back to the bowler.
Maynard was clearly our best batsman on the night although useful support came from Davies, Hyphen and Gaffer (whose nine runs off three ball made a nonsense of Arafat's elevation). The Brain was again frustrating. Although he hit a couple of sixes late on in his innings, there had been a lot of singles and dot balls before that.
Hants' three spinners all looked good. Briggs and Afridi both ended up being a bit expensive although I think that was more due to our having sneakily brought the boundary ropes in than any great waywardness on their part.
All in all, I thought we were about ten short of a par score. Wrong again!
Tremlett was really magnificent and blew the top order away. He and all the bowlers were supported by some excellent fielding (bar a dreadful drop by Arafat). The team seemed so lively and enthusiastic from the off.
The fielding highlight of this or any match was supplied by Roy. A magnificent boundary stop at full sprint with a direct hit to the bowler's end running out Mascarenhas. The best run out I have ever seen at a live game or on television in well over forty years of watching cricket.
Another run out soon followed but that [sorry if you're reading JimBoHammers] was just comic cuts with Dawson trying to run a quick single and Cork not budging an inch. I and others felt Cork should have sacrificed his wicket as Dawson seemed fairly well set and was pretty much Hants' last hope at this stage but the skipper chose to stay and see his ship go down.
Finally, I was again impressed by the Gaffer's bowling. His figures of 1-25 off 4 don't really do him justice. He came on when Boom Boom was starting a counter attack but refused to be intimidated and deservedly got his wicket.
A great result and night. Now we need to keep calm and keep going ....

I'm still not convinced by Tremlett and Meaker in this form of the game. I know Tremlett bowled very well last night but I think Carrotdude mentioned before that Tremlett is only good in the one day format when the pitch is doing something and last night Churchy said the ball was moving around a bit under the lights. Get him on a normal T20 batsman wicket and I don't think he can keep the runs down.

Re: Surrey Hampshire T20
guildford, cheers for the review. Dimi always opens the bowling and finishes his 4 overs from the start and he does a brilliant job at it.
Like i said last night if our top order fail we will really struggle and we did. Dawson and Afridi hung on but the performance was nowhere good enough.
