Are Manchester City about to get caught out? Empty Are Manchester City about to get caught out?

Post by Crimey Tue 16 Aug 2011, 12:48 pm

Manchester City's sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways will be analysed by Uefa's financial fair play (FFP) boss. In a 10-year deal reportedly worth £400m, Etihad now sponsors both the club's shirt and the stadium. But with City and Etihad sharing Abu Dhabi links, critics have claimed this is an attempt to circumvent European football's strict new financial rules. City declined to reply, although the club have previously said speculation over the figures was "not accurate".

"I have some questions, yes," said Jean-Luc Dehaene, the chairman of Uefa's Club Financial Control Panel. But it would be dangerous for our authority if we take judgements without facts." The 71-year-old former Prime Minister of Belgium confirmed his panel would "benchmark" all deals to make sure they were "fair value". "If we see clubs that are looking for loopholes we will act," he said. "It is not enough to say 'we've got a sponsorship contract and that's OK' if the contract is out of line."

As well as the shirt and stadium, Etihad also sponsors The Etihad Campus which is being developed around the ground. This will create an expanded academy, sports science centre and training ground, as well as office and retail space and a 7,000-seat stadium for youth games. All of this investment is exempt from the FFP rules as it is not deemed football-related. Any income accrued, however, does count.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport on Monday, City's chief executive Gary Cook said the deal was "unique". "The Ethihad Campus, which constitutes some 210 acres is unique in its breadth, depth and length of term," he said. "It involves the tradition, which is shirt sponsorship, the naming rights of the stadium, but what we haven't seen in football is a campus, creating a place to be, to work. We've got a great relationship with Ethihad. It's a long-term programme and they are equally very excited by it."

Cook added that City's recent spending was "not sustainable" but was needed to quickly attain Champions League football. Manchester City have been the focus of intense scrutiny ever since an Abu Dhabi-based consortium led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan bought the club in 2008. The club made a loss of £93m in 2008-09, £121m in 2009-10 and last year's figures, due in September, are expected to be even worse, despite an increase in turnover partly due to a number of lucrative sponsorship deals with other Abu Dhabi-based companies. Etihad Airways, for example, is owned by the Abu Dhabi government. The oil-rich state's ruler, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is Sheikh Mansour's half-brother.

It does look very fishy, but I wander if there is anything solid to get City with.

Doubt this will lead anywhere to be honest. City would challenge anything in court and Uefa would need to dig enough dirt to stick, which would likely be difficult.

These regs are opening Pandora's box, god knows some of the shady deals the big clubs in Europe have done! If they start to clamp down, I do think a breakaway is possible. Likely the threat of that would cool Uefa on some of their regs.

What about the DW Stadium or the St James' Park @SportsDirect Stadium?

I just don't understand why Uefa are so hellbent on stopping teams competing with Man United, Barca and Real Madrid.

Have Chelsea dominated football since Abramovich took over? No. Have they been able to compete with Man United, Barca and Real Madrid? Yes.

The new Uefa Financial Fair Play rules are so bad for football.

Wigan and Newcastle chariman are just advertising the companys with there football clubs, not declaring that there sponsership deal is worth £40mill a year, just to get past this UEFA fair play rule.

Plus its not Man Citys owners company, its his brothers!!!

The big club's will find loophole's in the rule's. Real Madrid and Barcelona will not have a hope of meeting the ffp rule's but they will find some way around it the same goes for City.

This ruling has been brought in to maintain the status quo. They'll be loopholes for the regulars (Barca, Madrid, United etc) to manage their finances however they like, but its in place to stop City and company challenging them.

I doubt UEFA can enforce this in court, how can you force a club to turn down a lucrative offer. Besides, if City do become the best team in the world thanks to this money then Etihad gets a lot of good publicity.

Not to mention the development and money they're putting into the local area also iirc. What right does UEFA have to stop that?

This whole thing smacks of putting the upstarts in their place and protecting the big names. Its ok for the big names to bully smaller teams into selling their players with their financial muscle, but when a smaller team starts bullying back?

They would love to charge an english club, however if that happeend it would open up a pandora's box, cause a few Russians clubs are also sponsored the way that Man City are, then there's PSG and Malaga who've got big deals.

If you want to read an unbiased article that lays down the facts for you, instead of the headline-grabbing BS published not only by tabloids, but broadsheets, BBC etc. read this http://swissramble.blogspot.com/search/label/UEFA%20Financial%20Fair%20Play

The Financial Fair Play rules will not affect the City deal at all, in reality they could have asked for far more than the reported £400m as it's for naming the whole area which will include the largest footballing academy on earth, the stadium itself, shirt sponsorship and whatever else they build on the 50? acre site they have.

They aren't being paid too much, the fact is, most PL clubs are too dumb to realise just how big a deal they should be getting for the most watched league on earth (by a mile), compare the market to US sports and compare the deals by PL clubs to those teams, as well as the biggest European football sides and the marketing men PL clubs use are totally inept.
