If Wales win the RWC should they get the same honour as the England 2003 team
If Wales win the RWC...
...and that is IF.
Do you think a precedent has now been set, and they should all get honours like the 2003 English side did.
If they dont, surely there is discrimination of sorts...
So if they win it is a minimum of MBEs for the Team, OBE for Sam Our Captain, and OBE for whoever kicks the winning drop goal (assuming it is won that way).
Not forgetting of course a Knighthood for Warren Gatland, who as a New Zealander, and part of the commonwealth can accept it....

Everything should be the same except Gatland should be given an OBE not knighted.
Clive Woodward should never have been knighted anyway.

But is it.... Clive Woodentop got knighted, and what has he done differently.. Nout. Both won Grand Slams, and IF all goes well both World Cups..... AND AGAIN THERE IS AN IF for those who will pick me up on it.
Also, not sure he could be given MBE or OBE being a New Zealander, but I know they can take a knighthood, dont know enough about the honours system to know what type of knighthood it is, but it is still Sir...

May I suggest you read the OP and Poll carefully.....
It says IF...
So I assume you voted NO. That IF Wales win, they shouldnt get the same awards....

Nathan, are you really suggesting that England got their gongs for being number one in the IRB rankings? Of course it was because they won the World Cup!

I put No because I don't think Gatland should be knighted. The rest of the honours should be the same though.

Nice try.... but no banana... Their awards where for winning the 2003 RWC.

Perhaps it was an award for excellence over time, with the world cup being the cherry on the cake?

Re: If Wales win the RWC...
Wales would of course be honoured if they won the world cup. I dont think as much as England were as they haven't shown that consistency yet.
Jonny Wilkinson kicked the winning drop goal, but was also rated player of the world cup. An lets be fair he became a massive rugby icon from these times.
Martin Johnson Captained England for a long time! And Captained them through to world cup.
I think timing has something to do with it as England were pretty much the world #1 the best part of two years before.
Where as 3 months ago no one would have backed Wales to have a shot at the World cup final if they're honest.
If Wales were to win I could see Shane Williams being honoured for his service to Welsh rugby. I just dont think players like Warbuton have been around long enough yet.

Far too many celebrates and professional sports people are getting honoured for doing something they are already being generously financially rewarded.
So it's a no off me.

As Barry Norman would say 'and why not?'
If a precedent has been set we almost had Sir Brian Ashton. If Wales win and Warren Gatland gets a knighthood there is a tiny riciculous chance that that may also set a precedent - a knighthood for a kiwi coach of the All Blacks (if they win the World Cup again).
I want a knighthood too - Sir Gramlin.

I said no
My reason - it was sickening watching some many honours for sportspeople doing their job. It was mainly due to a Labour government trying to win politicasl favour and was wrong
Celebrate their wins, maybe the odd award to players coming to the end of their careers, but blanket awards cheapen the whole thing

Absolutely yes, If Wales win then they should be honoured in the same way as the England team were.
The Wales team should be packed in a bendy bus and wheeled around Swansea & Cardiff and end up in some square so the Welsh fans can celebrate & cheer their team.
There is an argument for awards for the players themselves for services for winning (isn't that what the Winners Medal is for?) but at what level is to be decided by more important people than me.
They should definitely get the keys/freedom to the city.
Why not I say, knock yourselves out and have a party. We did.

Folks
I appreciate everyone is getting a little excited as the semi final approaches and we want to have some great debate on here over it, but take this as a gentle reminder, debate and banter are accepted here, abuse and personal insults are not. Should people wish to continue along that course, then site bans will follow.

So they want to be British now?
I'm so confused by it all, one min they're saying they're not British so the British media should stop jumping on the Welsh RWC bandwagon, then if they win they want the British honours that England got plus they want a Welsh flag flying above No10 Downing Street this weekend

Re: If Wales win the RWC...
They definately should but I can't see it. I say they should as the English rugby and cricket (i think) teams got honoured when they won WC's, but generally I don't think sports stars should get knighted unless they've done an absolutely exceptional job for years and years, and these people would be the exception, but as it's happened to other teams then it should happen for all teams.
PS Please note that I'm not saying Wales will win the WC, I don't expect it though it is possible, I'm just saying IF they do.

Hersh who says they don't want to be British?
I'm Welsh and British and proud of both, proud of the heritage and history of both Wales (individually) and Britain as a whole.
I'm confused about where you have heard Wales don't want to be part of Britain, unless you've confused Wales wanting an Assembly to equating to us wanting to form our own independant country - which of course is totally incorrect.
Also for my part I associate GSQ with England as it is the English anthem, I don't personally associate it with Britain.

I always think of it as the British Anthem and would really like the English not to sing it, but have there own tune like Wales & Scotland have. I like bread of heaven.
Own personal favourite would be Land Of Hope & Glory....
...not a huge fan of Jeruselem as I think it is a bit of dirge.
Maybe we could have Benny Hill.. or... Bad Boys!

Lets be honest if Wales did fluke it, then they should get the same as what England got,
Never ending hatred from every rugby nation in the world.
8+ years of not knowing your best XV.
A succession of Coaches and managers.
Never ending injuries to your best players which go on and on.
Priestland the next best thing, starts dating Kelly Brook and moves to Aus after football trials with QPR.
Cheap tacky music after every try you score at home.
Real fans priced out of International matches due to corporate tickets filling three quarters of the stadium.
The IRB are out to get you by appointing poor Refs to award penalty after penalty at the breakdown despite not doing anything wrong, don’t even mention the TMO’s.

Surely not the English whinging about the referees after being dumped out in the 1/4 final? I thought we just listened to 4 years of English fans telling NZ to man up and get over it.
"You should have been good enough to win anyway" I think was the line most oft-heard.
"If you blame the refs and don't look at yourself, you'll never improve" was another.
"Not mentally strong enough" was a third.
