1891 Rules of Golf....

I was doing a bit of reading in the Golfing Annual 1891-92.... and came upon "The Rules of Golf" (on page 64 forward).  INTERESTING reading... ONLY 6 pages... sheesh!!!  Definitely worth a look for those so inclined.   NOTE:  This was taken as a cut and paste from the copyright and royalty free... and free of cost version of the Golfing Annual Vol 5 found on Google Books. I did very little cleanup, so some characters or words throughout the copy might not have transposed correctly.

Very interesting find Robo.  It seems they focus on matchplay rather than strokeplay, which of course was the preferred form of the game in that era.

You can also see that they are the bones of today's rules, just without a lot of the unnecessary guff added on.  

I love rule 28, which states if you loose a ball you loose the hole.  How good would it be to see that reintroduced?

28. If a ball be lost, the player's side loses the hole. A ball shall be held

as lost if it be not found within five minutes after the search is begun.

Just think of the attitudes it would change in terms of slow play and course maintenance?


In a similar vain I also like rule 29

29. A ball must be played wherever it lies, or the hole be given up,

except as otherwise provided for in the Rules.
