Mayweather vs Maidana

Fight Hype are reporting that Leonard Ellerbe has declared that the fight is off. There was an issue with the Everlast gloves that Maidana wanted to use due to their padding, the commission and Schaefer agreed thag the make and model of the glove was fine but the actual pair were not.

This didn't sit well with Ellerbe who then declared the fight off, at which pointed Team Maidana packed their bags and left.

The commission have said the blue gloves aren't allowed but a red pair would be fine, the blue ones were custom made and didn't have enough padding. Now Team Mayweather don't want him to wear Everlast at all despite the contract saying he can chose his own gloves.

I really hope Maidana and his team stick to their guns here and say tough, Maidana could lose a pay day but Floyd would be breaching the contract.

Mayweather's team will look like muppets if this fight is cancelled although I don't think it will.

Perhaps just trying to drum up PPV sales

Hopefully boxing contracts in Nevada carry more weight than they do with the BBBofC.


Could this be a publicity stunt?

Little more than publicity stunt to drum up sales on what I would hazard a guess is a PPV event which is flagging in terms of sales so far.

Does saying a fight is off really drum up PPV sales?

I'd be staggered if maidana pulled out.. As truss says he's not going to hit anything whatever gloves he wears... He might as well pick the comfiest ones. Madness to lose your big payday, regardless of the rights or wrongs of the situation.

Why is Maidana the fool? He's the WBA champ now. He's getting paid well for Floyd, but it's hardly stratosphere money. Martinez got $5m fighting in front of his people. Absolutely nothing to suggest Maidana doesn't make similar bank in a homecoming fight to what he's getting for Floyd, at a lower risk.

I doubt this is true, but at $1.5m, Floyd's hardly dangled a big enough carrot to bully The Maid into anything he doesn't want to do.

Martinez had the benefit of being the Middleweight champion a division the argentines have history in as well as being a national hero which Maidana isn't at the moment. He and Matthyse fall are a long way behind Martinez in the popularity stakes.

If Maidana could make more money fighting stiffs at home..He wouldn't have agreed to 1.5 million for FMJ

Golden Boy is using sales from Argentina to subsidize Maidana's purse, (for tax reasons) so his purse is already being linked to his popularity in his homeland.

Garcia said he was happy for Maidana to wear the standard red Mexican Everlast gloves or the Reyes. The commission have no problem with the standard Everlast MX gloves. He doesn't see it as fair that Maidana should wear the same super padded gloves as Mayweather.

Maidana's only chance is a punchers chance and he doesn't want to have any power taken away from his punches.

Why should Maidana just admit defeat like some are suggesting and go into the ring wearing a pair of pillows on his hands if that is what Floyd wants?

Bad news for Khan if it's off...not sure he can afford another cancellation..with Ramadan coming up he wouldn't fight till at least December! That would be 18 months out of the ring!!

Mayweathers a spoilt brat and acts like a 6 year old if he doesn't get his own way. He is an absolute superb boxer but can't help but think the sport will be better when he goes and less of these shenanigans are highlighted.

I reckon Maidana will get to wear the red Everlast gloves that the commission have approved.

Cleto Reyes are the punchers gloves and Garcia mentioned these but  I can't see Floyd allowing them.

If the commission and the rules state you can wear them, then Floyd shouldn't be having a hissy fit.

He isn't coming out of this looking anything other than a whiny mardbutt, and if the fight doesn't go ahead he should get torn apart.

Is Maidana really on $1.5m? I was under the impression it was much higher.

It appears it is only $1.5mil Scott which is the same amount as Khan is earning as chief support, I think we all may have underestimated Khans pulling power a bit.

1.5 base, gets some of the ppv as well, but, as I understand it, it's scaled, and if projections are correct, he probably isn't going to top up too much, especially after uncle Sam, who won't get most of his base, gets his ppv cut

Yeah I've just read that. I know it depends on the structure of his PPV money but a $1.5m base sounds pretty bad when Guerrero is getting double that as a guarantee.

It was an absolute embarrassment from Canelo's money men. Floyd's previous fight did less than a million, your potential fight is looking at at least 2 million - Common sense dictates you're a selling point in this - and the best they can get you is 2 million more than Guerrero? Embarrassing!!

1) A ppv percentage in that fight is worth a lot more than this.

2) No way is Maidana getting the same percentage as Canelo

Floyd is a 17 year pro and a credit to the ethics of fair play. I could see from here in England that them gloves had little to NO padding. You can clearly see Mayweather's knuckle sticking out of the right side of the glove.

I don't know, why would he complain about perfectly legal gloves on the eve of a fight not projected to break the box office? It makes absolutely no sense to make it appear that a fighter many expect to get schooled is wearing gloves that Improve his chances. Strange all round.

He did not stage anything he is just very particular with the fair play aspect of the sport. His critics are looking for anything to taint him with.

I can't tell if you're serious? Of course it's a benefit to make it appear that his opponent has more of a chance from gloves that benefit them. That and every news station is giving him more publicity.

I don't really think that's why he's doing it though, he just must have control of everything.
