Round 5 is over and what a controversial round it was.  The big winners were Stella with Definitely Maybe and Beadle with Grace who both pick up maximum points.  All is not what it seems though.  Tactical voting from at least 2 people (myself and Jeff) and possibly more meant that Grace was able to claim joint first place.  There is just never any reason for Definitely Maybe to be in a discussion about greatest debut albums.  Never.  It has crushed my soul to think that people believe that.  But hey, what do I know.  Apparently it’s “musically important”.  Who would have thought it.  I thought it was just important for sales of Parka coats.  I’m deeply fond of Stella but he deserves to be locked in a room with SerialDAVE for an hour as punishment.  Locked in a room after SerialDAVE has just been snubbed by the whole of SLAYER.  GrumpyG*lfer had a solid round with The Who, picking up 8 points.  A great round for Paul as his 6 points for the Sex Pistols means he has joined Hero at the top of the league.  A massive zero for Hero (see what I did there?) means a few posters have closed the gap on our reigning champion.  Sean would have had a storming round, but he is too dim to comprehend simple questions and as such, nominated Slim Shady which fell outside the criteria.  Shame.  Union Cane managed to pick up some votes for Force & Styles which will cheer him up after getting nothing in the last round his favourite film of all time, The Iron Lady.  Big news in the battle between Jeff and Mel Gibson superfly.  Jeff, somewhat surprisingly, got nothing for the Gilded Palace of Sin whereas ‘Fly got a solid 5 points for The Stone Roses (which he only picked to sh*t on Jeff) meaning he leaps above his arch rival in the table.  No holds barred in that particular scrap.  Poor old Galted.  No votes or points for him again but don’t worry, he has procured a new pair of cargo pants and laces for his Hi-Tecs so has a spring in his step regardless.  No points for SerialDAVE with his pick, which is probably bad news for Bradford’s prostitute population.

Here is the updated league table:

1) Hero 30 pts
2) Paul 30 pts
3) Trebs 27 pts
4) C&R 24 pts
5) The Boss 24 pts
6) GumpyG*lfer 22 pts
7) Ziggler 21 pts
8) Fat Head Adam 21 pts
9) Harrier 19 pts
10) Michaels 16 pts
11) weeman 16 pts
12) Beadle 16 pts
13) Azzy 14 pts
14) Shah abu-bakr 12 pts
15) Stella 12 pts
16) Nakatomi 11 pts
17) SerialDAVE 9 pts
18) superfly 9 pts
19) Jeff 8 pts
20) Jules 8 pts
21) Union Cane 7 pts
22) Dagless 7 pts
23) Ray Mears big fat zero pts

Round 6 is back to books so please see the poll for WHAT IS THE BEST SPORT THEMED BOOK EVER?

Interesting reading Tina, it seems I am locked in a battle of wits with superfly, he is a halfwit, but obviously that puts him a good quarter in front of me. I really enjoy the Uncrowned Champions book, but as I have used/ripped off this book for threads in the past it seems almost certain superfly has picked it just to ensure I help him beat me in the scoring, which tactical voting aside I would have ended up doing last time round.

May have to actually think about what to vote for this time. Should there be another competition I am in the market for a new nemesis, superfly is a bit too bright for me. Might target galted, he seems almost allergic to votes.

It's only now the books are up, I realise Adams PM was absolutely correct. Not the part about me making him go a bit funny everytime I post something (although that is true), rather the part about this being a sh*te subject.

Never mind, it's too late to change it now. It might hurry this one up I think.

The double point extravaganza final round will make up for it. That's going to be a classic.

Most of the 'mainstream' boxing books are a pile of crap, I barely scraped the surface of UB before ditching it into the cupboard for the rest of eternity. Dave should be ashamed of himself if he doesn't vote for the Cogswell book with it's glowing reverence towards to Peter Jackson amongst others.

Unfortunately, despite it making me both a c*nt and a moron I had to vote for Fever Pitch.

It was my first choice, and I felt I had to uphold the spirit of the cup by voting for it, despite the realisation that this makes me the end of a bell.

My choice already has a vote, so even if nothing else happens i will definitely have beaten Galted.

Only know three books written about Jackson, I own one, can't afford the other two therefore haven't read them but have based my selection on the fact that it's about Peter Jackson, (he's great, Sully was a p*ssy as was Corbett) and if for no other reason, that makes it the greatest selection

Went with "The Secret Race" for two reasons

1) It's a cracking read (highly recommend to any who haven't read it)

2) It's the only one on there I've actually read.

1) means I don't have to feel too bad about 2) at least... In all seriousness I find a lot of sports books to be fairly dull really, with the odd interesting bit thrown in. The only two I've read which I've really enjoyed have been "The Secret Race" and "Playing with Fire" - Nasser Hussain's autobiography.

G*lfer, you got your first choice. Even though you were rock bottom of the list. Not sure what that tells you about your list, I'll leave that for you to interpret.

I haven't read a single book up there, so I am also open to suggestions/bribes about where to place my vote. I own Dark Trade but haven't actually read it.

I should have done a round on 'Best War Books'. I would probably have read all of the picks.

I might just do that. I've heard lots of good stuff about it.

Went for Tyler Hamilton's book as it gives a great insight into one of the biggest sports stories of all time.

Just about pips The Damned United which I'd recommend to everyone and which is much better than the film (although GB84 by David Peace is better still).

I'm tempted to go for Moneyball simply because I read one of his earlier books (non sporting) and it was extraordinarily good.  That's a terrible reason but I'm struggling.

I own Dark Trade but it appears from a couple of reviews on here that it's overrated.

I'm not voting for a wendyball book, no matter how good it might be.

why don't your pic the 3 you think you might like and then take amazon's word for it (ratings). That would be a fair way for you to voted

I loved I Am Zlatan. But it wasn't written by him, and more importantly... The writer just made things up which "Capture the essence of Zlatan". The only other book I've read on here was The Secret Race, and while I enjoyed that, I enjoyed the Moneyball movie more, and since the book is always better than the movie... well, Moneyball wins on that logic

Rowley wrote:Dark Trade, I despair at the folk on here sometimes. Most over rated boxing book ever written.

Don't know if it's overrated or not (certainly not as overrated as Four Kings), but I think it's a genuinely good book. I quite like Macrae's style and his ability as an interviewer to get past someone's public face. Christ, he even manages to make James Toney an almost sympathetic character.

By no means the best book on boxing but head and shoulders above the run of the mill biographies and stuff like Jacob's Beach or anything by Thomas Hauser.

Fever Pitch is a book for morons.

Dolph, what do you hate about it so much? I'm just interested really as you seem so determined that it is a sh*te book. There's a film as well isn't there? With Colin Firth?

In his book, Niall Quinn States, he knew his wife was the one for him when he was drunk and picked an old bit of bacon off the floor and took a bite out of it. Instead of being disgusted his wife ate the rest of it.

If that's not literary brilliance, I don't know what is.

Wish I had put down 'Nowhere Men', which is a book about Football scouts. A very good read.
