SURREY VS NOTTINGHAMSHIRE LV=COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE 2023

Surrey have named a 14 man squad for the lv= Insurance County championship game against Nottinghamshire at the Kia Oval starting on Monday 10th July.
Jamie Overton returns to the red-ball squad for the first time this year, replacing Sam Curran who is recharging.
There is no place in the squad for Ben Geddes, Conor McKerr or Amir Virdi.

Will be tough on Patel who scored back to back hundreds for the stiffs against Middlesex last week but i don't see any way to fit him in with that top six pretty much sorted.
With Overton named in the squad you would expect him to start, so maybe Lawes and Steel to join Patel on drink duties.

I was expecting Curran to play with an Ashes chance at the Oval. The 37 overs must have worn him out, or keeping himself fit the Blast final. I hope Lawes does play, I like watching him bowl.

Like you and Jetty, I don't understand the Curran recharging thing - seems crazy!

Agree with you about the eleven although a more correct and ballsy a decision would be to play Patel in place of Latham.

Meanwhile, a third consecutive ton in the stiffs for Patel. This time against Sussex at Horsham. Don’t know when his contract is up but that form will generate interest from other counties. In view of Lawrence joining next season, Patel will probably bite.

Jake Ball is off injured - and Brett Hutton has just gone off clutching his hamstring too.

200-5 at tea, with Foakes and Clark both not out in the 40s - good afternoon session for Surrey, both on the scoreboard but also with Ball not returning and Hutton going off injured. Remains to be seen how serious they both are, but suggest there is a huge opportunity in this last session for Surrey to put Notts into the dirt with some proactive yet sensible batting

We’ll probably be reasonably satisfied with 350 odd and 3 batting points but we definitely wasted opportunities to go properly big, especially considering that Notts were often one bowler (Ball) down and sometimes two (Hutton).

3 wickets lost in about as many overs before lunch yesterday, Jacks gifting his wicket when well set and 2 in 2 balls this morning when they should have been supporting JOve - stand out examples of poor play.

and now the bowlers are letting us down

Hameed and Young played very well yesterday. Going to be difficult for Surrey to win from here, particularly with more rain expected today. Assuming Ball is unable to bowl in our second dig, I would guess that Notts will be in no rush and well satisfied with a draw.

We are not firing on all cylinders and Burns is badly out of touch but we are still top of the table. I fear axing the captain now would be disruptive rather than beneficial.

Although Latham’s not been as bad as Burns since joining this season, he’s been a poor signing so far. As mentioned earlier in the thread, I would question his continued place in the team. Out for 29 shortly before lunch on day one - better than Burns’ duck admittedly but that’s still never going to win us a Championship match.

Yes some bowling points today to add to the total and a draw with the forecast seems to be the best outcome for us here. Shame to not pickup more yesterday but you have to tip your cap to Young in particular. Draw not a disaster, especially with Hampshire in a spot of bother in Taunton and Essex having a day wiped out to rain in Blackpool.

Another atrocious morning from Surrey, didn't get full bowling points, Notts are going to have a healthy lead, doubtful that our ace top order will wipe out... let's hope it rains and we can escape wth a draw...beware of Warwicks, who are going to eat into our lead and still have a game in hand

Why I am quite so harsh on this one - if he's there I think we can send Jacks, Clark, Abbot, JOverton in at the other end with some license to attack, Foakes rotating strike and anchoring the other end.

Slightly throws into question those players roles tomorrow now.

I've had the impression for a little while that too many of the players have an attitude of, ''If I stuff up, someone else will fix it''. That finally caught up with us second dig against Lancs and looks like it might again tomorrow.

With more direct reference to your post, Lawes could try to adopt the anchor role you envisaged for Foakes. Lawes has been poor with the bat this season and gone in as night watchman so will probably be in the hutch within ten minutes tomorrow but can and should be better than that.

Borrowing Craig's roadmap, the best possible route for us now is to add another 125 in 100 minutes tomorrow and then have around 67 overs in which we bowl 'em out, assuming the weather allows. Btw, Craig was always far too much of an optimist for me!
