The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

They're discussing smoking on Radio 2. Inevitably, someone emailed in saying she was fed up of paying for smokers who needed treament for smoking-related illnesses. Um, do smokers not pay towards the NHS? Doesn't the money they spend on heavily-taxed tobacco count for anything?
(I know smoking is bad for your health, by the way.)

Lucky - that argument is bollix anyway because you could apply it to anyone and anything - speeding drivers, junk food lovers, drinkers...they all cost the NHS money too and yet it's not a necessity for people to do those things either and they're bad for your health.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I think in general we need to be healthier. Encouraging people to stop smoking is all part of that. Combating obesity, promoting sport, trying to change our diet, trying to encourage people to give up drinking- all kinds of things.
You can't make people stop doing things that are bad for them. Humans have a self-destructive, hedonist tendency. Whether it's chocolate, cocaine or cigarettes most have a vice of varying seriousness.

No that's my point. As I said you can apply that caller's argument to anyone not just smokers, so it doesn't really stand up very well because smokers can argue that they're funding drinkers etc.
I'm an ex smoker by the way but I'm not someone who gets all high and mighty and has a go at others who smoke.

I had a consultation with a Dietician yesterday. Very informative. Seriously found it helpful. Not cos I want to go on a diet but as I just don't understand heathy eating and I want to know about it all.
More people should do it. Information is a great thing.

I'm trying to learn about it. I have an idea though. I'm starting to make more of an effort training wise etc too.

Rev, training is my issue. I haven't a clue how to work the stuff in the gym. Dietician said that a gym would do wonders for me.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I used to eat every three hours when I was into the gym a few years ago, as well as having protein shakes and creatine. Expensive stuff, though.

When you join a gym, a trainer will devise a programme for you and show you how to use the equipment. You could also get a few goes with a personal trainer (which will cost you extra).
Did the dietician tell you to drink plenty of water?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yea they did Sin.
Very comprehensive I was so impressed. I booked it a few days ago and made a record of everything I ate/drank. They told me to eat normally so if I normally eat chocolate bar for lunch do it so they can gauge.
They looked at what I usually eat for my meals and snacks, what times I have them, asked what foods I like/don't like etc. How many teas/coffees per day etc. They were showing me what bad food to eat too so when you do take sweets to know which ones - what brands of biscuits, fizzy drinks to eat and drink. They did a taste test thing where I couldn't tell difference between 7up and the 7up Free drinks for example. If you get a chinese what are the better and worse dishes and all that kind of thing. They asked what way I eat Chinese do I mix the sauce in with the rice. I said yes and they asked why bother getting Fried Rice instead of boiled.
Then about how I should eat/drink if I am exercising. Basically they said that my diet is fairly good. Needs changing but as in things that are urine easy to change. They said that getting a structured gym programme is the key for my own needs. They told me to spend a few quid and get a George Foreman said it will be a super investment - easy to cook, healthy and quick. Our grill is broken at home so I fry most foods.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
George Foreman is good. Also, the spray oil thing is excellent. Most foods are well labelled now, so go for the low salt, low fat and avoid monosodium glutamate (which is used extensively in Chinese food).
They really should teach this sort of stuff in schools.
On the specialised trainer - in the gym I go to (very occasionally, usually for a swim) in Rathmines, Pat Jennings (former NI & Spurs great) is a personal trainer specialising in fitness for sport.

It's brilliant, isn't it? I went to see a nutritionist last year for pretty much the same reason. She gave me loads of great advice and tips, and I've got tons of recipes now to follow as well. The first few months afterwards I was really good at following everything but I confess I've gotten a bit lazy in 2011, still stick to the basics though.
The two most important things she told me to do was to drink lots of water and make sure I eat something within an hour of waking, the only annoying thing is that's the 2 things I find most difficult to do!

One to cheer Penfro up. Obviously golf has gone uncool in here again otherwise
Welshman Phillip Price's first competitive hole-in-one at the Scottish Open has earned him an unusual prize - 168 bottles of champagne. Scott Jamieson, Graeme McDowell and Peter Whiteford share the lead on 11 under par.

ooo Scarlets are launching their leisure range on Monday! That will make the wait for the official kit easier.
Hey Glas, not seen you in here too much for a while, how are ya? You got your hands on a season ticket yet for the Scarlets? the early bird prices finish in 5 days
I'm not sure I would compare those who smoke to those who drink. Passive smoking kills too, tis one of my huge bug bears, smokers aren't only making themselves ill but they are potentially making others ill too. People who drink alcohol don't force the people who don't to drink the stuff.

Dreamer - alcohol is responsible for a lot more deaths than people realise if you include all the alcohol related incidents that cause death/injuries in addition to the health risks that happen as a direct result of alcohol. At least there seems to be more legislation attempting to protect people from smoking and its effects than alcohol at the moment.

very true Notch, that's a good point. I was more thinking about the actual health implications on the body though, purely by drinking the alcohol (not the behaviour it can cause), you are only abusing your own body and no one else's. Smokers can't say that.

How are you Gibbo?
On the subject of alcohol, I've found out there is a pub in Chester that sells bitter for £1.60 and it is decent. There's another place allegedly that sells bitter for £1.50 but I have not visited said place yet.

Cari,
Not here in Chester. Finding a pint for £2 is really good. £1.50/60 is fantastic.
I've already moved all my clothes. Now it's just books, shoes, DVDs and other miscellaneous items.

Munsty - £1.60 for a pint is amazing, even better if it's actually a good one. Good luck with the rest of your move, I know it can be a bit of a strange experience sometimes. Like when I moved form Uni I was really sad, but then when I moved from my last house to this flat I was really happy. Guess it depends on the memories you have of the place you're leaving.
