Gloucs Thread
First topic message reminder :
Don't like the new set-up - all done without much consultation over a couple of days of a holiday weekend.
Well thought out.
So just starting a Gloucs thread within the County Cricket section.
There, that's the dullest topic I have ever posted.
(Please don't disagree.)
But further postings in this thread may be more interesting...

Sorry CF that you are fed up after a week and a bit. We at Gloucs are fed up after a season and a bit.
Gloucs "let go" two 30-year old keepers in Steve Adshead and Steve Snell, both very decent and sometimes match-winning players. Furthermore they do not seem to have taken up promising local Louis Gegg from his emerging player contract.
Instead, we now have to tolerate a 38-year old (in the middle of a 3-year contract) whose best years are definitely behind him, who is consistently worse than either Adshead or Snell.... yet who somehow keeps coming in and out of the side.
He was recently brought back into the team to replace Coughtrie who "has had a bit of a rough ride with the bat." Maybe, but not as rough as 18 in 5 innings (thanks SN).
The target of the criticism is the coach/selector/chairman/purse-string-holder, not Jon Batty. I have nothing personally against JB. He's probably a nice chap who is trying his best. What annoys me (and probably Spiny too) is the inequitable treatment by the "management" of Adshead, Snell and Batty.
Oh yes, and he used to play for Surrey![]()
Thanks, Chris. That's exactly what I meant.
If I ever need a spokesperson...

Indeed. And pretty comprehensive it was, too

Pity there's no more real cricket here until August

Expensive way to do it though
They should have stuck to Friday and put up a couple of screens for the footy.

Another impressive knock from JB today - keeps his average steady.
Never mind, another good win, and fine bowling by Murali

Pity about the catering, though. In the Hammond Room you could have an all-day breakfast - at SIX O'CLOCK
No chance of a sausage or bacon bap though
Fortunately the Jessop was rather better organised.

We were crushed, but a superb spell by Murali. I honestly can claim to have read his wicket-taking delivery, which is more than the batsman did

I believe that is his first double-figure score of the season, in his 10th innings...

Re: Gloucs Thread
Chris and Spiny Norman,
This may be old news to you but I was surprised and saddened to learn today that former Gloucs batsman Martin Stovold died in May from a lung disease. He was only 56.
I can't claim to remember him well but I certainly remember him and his brother. I hope it's not too disrespectful to say that Martin never quite established himself in the Gloucs side of the late 1970s / early '80s. That was in contrast to his older brother Andy, a fairly successful batsman and wicket keeper.
However, I was pleased to read that Martin enjoyed coaching success in South Africa where one of the youngsters under his charge was Jacques Kallis and in more recent years as a much respected teacher at Cheltenham College.

Gloucs third in CB40 table with games in hand.
Through to T20 quarters.
Saxelby 6-48 v Leics.
Batty 25 n.o. opening the batting...

Batty out for 26 - your fault, Chris!
Btw, interested in any comment concerning my post above about Martin Stovold.

Gloucs 91 - 7 in reply to Glam 208. Clearly a mistake to have gone for Coughtrie as wicketkeeper as he was out for a duck.

Fine performance from the up and coming youngster Batty who scored 55 and then took three catches as Northants slumped to 73 - 7 in reply to Gloucs modest total of 220.

Re: Gloucs Thread
Having been in a very damp and grey Scarbrough for the "festival" - I have to say Gloucester had the worst bowling attack I have seen in many a year.
Huge thanks to them for agreeing a run chase - but in extremely bowler friendly conditions Yorkshire should not have come close. gidman tried his heart out, but the fact he was opening the bowling says everything.

Gloucs increased their advantage today.
Batty ended with 4 catches in Northants' paltry total of 100 and is already 23* in second innings. Is this a bid to earn new long term contract with Gloucs...?

If this is it for Jon Batty it is fitting that his last innings, even in a lowly no 9 slot, was a rapid 40*

First and Second
First championship century of the season... Gloucs' Hamish Marshall.
Second championship century of the season... Gloucs' Dan Housego.
You can't do much batter than that.

Welcome back CfS. Excellent start from Gloucs, tho I suspect a draw is on the cards with rain forecast for tomorrow.
Surrey supporters interested to see Tom Lancefield being given a chance at Gloucs - in the second XI - where he promptly scored a century against the first team bowling line up of his former century.

Lancefield never really given any sort of chance in the Surrey first team, which was a shame as we are stretched pretty thinly this season on the batting front.
How do you rate Glouc's chance for this season.....?

Afternoon Corporal.
For your benefit especially, I was comparing them militarily...
All we need is Pike and we'll be a force to be reckoned with.
Still, if Lancefield can emulate Spearman's 341 then I'll be happy to compare them as batsmen too.
As for the coming season, who knows... it's all in the mind.
Mark Alleyne performed wonders with an apparently average team.
I hope Klinger can do the same.

Slow on the uptake.....

Can't offer a Pike - but Surrey do of course have Sgt Wilson.
