Gloucs Thread
First topic message reminder :
Don't like the new set-up - all done without much consultation over a couple of days of a holiday weekend.
Well thought out.
So just starting a Gloucs thread within the County Cricket section.
There, that's the dullest topic I have ever posted.
(Please don't disagree.)
But further postings in this thread may be more interesting...

Madness
Gloucs lose to Netherlands by ONE run. For some reason they held star batsman Batty back so he came in at No 10. Off his three balls faced he managed a stike rate of 200. Just one more ball would have done it for Gloucs

He must have upset the Boss. Probably didn't say "Yes, sir" quick enough.

Re: Gloucs Thread
As I have said on the CB40 thread, loosing to Netherlands should not be regarded as an embarrassment.
Batty is interesting. I spoke to a Gloucs supporter on the Cricinfo blog/forum, who was very disparaging about Batty. Thought he'd been so poor since joining from Surrey that he should have been released, and that Gloucs were right in persisting with their (probably financially motivated) decision to play Coughtrie in the Championship. The last thing he wanted was a recall for Batty. Odd, as I always thought Batty was a good, honest pro at Surrey, and an experienced played that Gloucs desperately need in their ranks.

S93, I think you mean "inept" rather than "interesting".
BBC Radio Bristol commentators described his missed stumping today as the easiest/worst in the history of cricket.
They also mentioned something about Batty being second team coach at Gloucs (a role I had hoped he would take up back at Surrey.)
Does anyone know if this is true? (Where's LydneyBob when you need him?)

Would certainly agree Batty is past his prime. But it does seem odd to put him at no 10...

Er... Not exactly
More of a pub side - the King Charles Spaniels

Alas, neither pub nor club is still with us

Good God no
I was an umpire and very occasional leg-spinner. I took a lot more wickets as an umpire

Gloucs v Middx due to start at 3:52.
McCarter replaces "2 overs for 24" Muchall.
Batty keeps on keeping.

By the way, who's better than Batty (apart from current incumbent 4-day w/k Coughtrie)?
Steve Adshead, Steve Snell, Louis Gegg, to name but three...

So, if Batty is a horrendous wicketkeeper and is now batting at no 10, what is the explanation of why he has been kept on and is playing in this match....
Has he got mysterious powers of influence?

Even with all those initials still some way to go but a winning innings from Benny Howell today.Spiny Norman wrote:He's [Benny Howell's] got three initials, so he must be England material

Admirable support from Jon Batty resembling a restrained Graveney putting the interests of the team above his own.

Taylor from Notts has three initials - no doubt why everyone's backing him for future England role. So has Matthew Spriegel....
Good to see Batty batting at the finish.....

No, but he has got a 3-year contract and Gloucs don't have any money to buy him out of it.
Coughtrie is the better keeper and 4-day batsman, but either deemed too slow for CB40, or just in need of a rest, or someone promised JB a game or two.

Irish fan here...what do ye Glos fans make of Graeme McCarter, will he get more chances this season? How quick is he as I have never seen him in the flesh.

Not a Gloucs fan but on TV he was only clocking mid-70s. Young and reasonably accurate though.

Could someone (preferably Gidman Senior) please explain to me, with Yorks 216 - 3 chasing 400 to win, why neither Marshall, Williamson nor Dent have been given a bowl yet?

Norman, can't you just nip out of the members' enclosure onto the pitch and ask him?
(Yorks only need 170 off about 40 overs; that's not too tricky.)

But finally Jacques is out. Yorks should win - but a collapse is entirely possible.....

Oh, the wickets are a'tumblin' now.
Well, we've gotta start somewhere.

Let's see, 18 off 6 overs, at a BresnanRate of 13 an over....
Not looking good.
