Key moments SA vs Samoa Empty Key moments SA vs Samoa

Post by Biltong Fri Sep 30, 2011 3:08 pm

Morne Steyn look left: 1 minute 27 seconds:
5 on 4 overlap, momentum with us and Samoan defence not organised, Morne Steyn goes for a drop goal and misses. 25 meters out

Offload gone wrong: 5 minutes 28 seconds:
Fourie du Preez hits the gap and offloads to Habana inside the Samoan 22, Habana half collects but drops the ball, clear run in.

Hey, where did my support go: 12 minutes 57 seconds:
Samoa after a number of phases are penalised for holding on, support players too slow to get there and SA has two players on their feet. Samoa 3 meters from the try line.

Get out of there Jannie: 15 minutes:
Quick ball, need quick hands to get the ball wide after some phases and Jannie du Plessis is standing in midfield just outside the Samoan 22, knocks the ball on.

Quick ball Fourie, get it out: 36 minutes:
Counter attack ball Habana runs into the Samoan 22 about 15 meters out, quick ball secured, Fourie du Preez takes his time and takes two step before wanting to pass, ball gets knocked out of his hands, although I must say Lemi was never really onside, but Owens says it is fair.

Comedy of errors: 40 minutes 30 seconds:

Burger turns over ball at the ruck, gets hit before he can get the ball away, Fotuali’i picks up and runs, he gets the ball out to Mapausua on the 22, who flicks the ball ball without looking and hit Owens with the ball, time called first half over.

Overdone: 46 minutes 6 seconds:
Spies collects at the back of another dominating scrum, but goes straight into burger creating an obstruction. Penalty Samoa 5 meters from their goal line.

Ouch: 50 minutes 20 seconds:
Hougaard only on for 4 minutes gets a solid knee on the side of his head, gets up after a while looking seriously groggy. Jean de Villiers replaces him.

Missed penalty kick: 53 minutes:
Just after Samoa scored their try Morne Steyn misses a penalty from 30 meters out.

Thanks Nigel Owens: 56 minutes 20 seconds:

Lemi makes a clean break through the heavy traffic after an up an under is collected by Paul Williams, he runs 40 meters and is stopped just inside the SA 22, gets up again and is blown by Owens for not releasing. A little error there, hey Nige?

Try, no try? 60 minutes 20 seconds:
Bismarck du Plessis at the back of a maul goes over, and as the New Zealand commentators said, you know it is a try, but you can’t see it. Not awarded.

Another knock: 61 minutes
Steyn charges to the line 5 meters out ball is knocked back and Brussow fails to collect cleanly.

Butter fingers: 66 minutes:
Twice Samoa attack the line being stopped just short of the line until eventually the third time they knock the ball on.

Paul Williams: 69 minutes:
Williams pushes or slaps or hits Brussow in the face with the heal of his hand, brussow falls down, red card.

What, you missed that forward pass? 69 minutes 49 seconds:
Owens stands on the ten meter line of Samoa, the Samoan player passes the ball from the ten meter line it goes clearly forward and Owens let’s it go, the ball come back from the next phase, John Smit according to the New Zealand commentators makes no attempt to catch the ball ( which i am in total disagreement with), yellow card John Smit.

More butter fingers: 75 minutes:
SA on attack, Lambie goes through the half gap, 5 meters out and loses the ball in the tackle

SA didn’t concede one penalty closer than their 10 meter line, in fact most were in the samoan half of the field. So their discipline on defence was brilliant.

They did very well in the forward exchanges until the last 20 minutes, Samoa managed to gain control then, but the game became scrappy and a free for all with many mistakes and counter attacks from both sides, just ending in another mistake and counter from the opposition.

SA needs to work on their umbrella defence, I don’t know if it was overconfidence, but they left the line in the second half almost every time, Australia will love them to do that, for there are holes wider than barn doors out there.

Our execution and technical errors cost us a number of opportunities and we will need to sharpen up on that.

Under pressure Morne steyn reverts to type, he starts kicking the ball and doesn’t seem to care whether it is out or not, some accuracy in decision making is necessary.

There may also be some injury worries.

Australia may well be confident after this performance, but rather see the short comings now than only find them out when it is too late.

Not to forget this was a very physically demanding game, and the boks did come out ontop.

Sounds like Nigel Owens had one of his best games. He is normally far more inept than that.

I'm looking forward to watching this tonight, have some beers in the fridge and this recorded and a meal with missus first, perfect.

I've read conflicting reports on Smit's yellow as to whether it was for not attempting to catch or kicking the ball away after the whistle had gone. I could have been convinced that he was going for the catch, but he didn't do a very good job of looking incredulous after the call, he looked more like a little boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar when he was sent off.

I don't think he tried to slap it down, but he shouldn't have kicked it there after, i think that is what brought the yellow card on.

The problem was the pass was high, so looking at it in slow motion he did try to catch it, but what do I know

The Paul williams send off was not really worth a red card, but he did strike brussow in the face, so I suppose a yellow card would have sufficed, but there was only 14 minutes left, so it didn't cost samoa anytihng becuase John Smit was sent off, and in my opinion also not justified.

I listened to the commentary on the radio as work got in the way again, I have to admit I was a little surprised SA didn't put Samoa away more easily, but after reading your summary of key incidents it looks like a few points got away through poor handling/passing and some dodgy decision making?

I guess the result is most important and with 4 wins out of 4 you have to consider it a job done.

Will Botha be fit for next week? From what I heard Matfield was imperious in the lineouts today, but didn't seem to feature much otherwise, I think he misses BB as the two together seem to spur each other on and have a great understanding of each others game.

Samoa was up for it today, I think what must not be forgotten here is that they are a stronger team than what people think.

They pushed wales hard and were unlucky not to come away with a win, they dispatched Fiji with ease, although not their best game.

But today they knew it was last chance saloon and they played like kamakze pilots for the cause.

I think the biggest reason why SA didn't win by more was because they lost focus of what should be done.

They didn't focus on retaining control in the breakdowns and paid more attention to the slaps, handbags, pushes etc.

they did keep their cool though and didn't go too much of the boil though.

What Bilton forgets to mention with regards to Brussow is that williams was holding on to his jersey in the ruck and wouldnt let go (happens all the time) yet Brussow hit him at least twice in the head with his elbow/forearm. Williams got up and gave Brussow an open handed slap/push which elicited Brussow to throw himself theatrically to the ground squeeling like the big girls blouse he is.

Owens didnt do either side any favours but he at least badly reffed the game evenly.

Samoa with a little more composure would have been closer at the end and should possibly have won based on the second half. Owens getting in the way of the try scoring oppurtinity at the end of the first half (and then blowing up for half time) being a case in point.

Smits face for the yellow card was hilarious...."wot me"???

We have already established on numerous threads last night that Brussow is a sissy and took a dive from the 10 meter diving platform, he was bitchslapped and he cried like a baby.

hope i didn't forget anything, I think next week he will be climbing out of the closet.

I heard he's quitting rugby to become a florist and run a crotchet school for young girls after the world cup Biltong, do you know if there's any truth in that rumour?

Any danger of Pienaar seeing the matchday 22 Biltong and if he doesnt see gametime (Hougaard clearly 2nd choice 9) do you think he will return to SA soon?

Ahh, but it must have been a dive, you're a SAFFA, so it must have been cheating.

Oh and you don't deserve to win, and lots of other stereotypes. Hug

On a slightly more serious note, SA have looked slightly untidy in one or two games, been pushed really close, and still closed them out. I don't necessarily get this "deserved to win" malarkey. Wales should have beaten SA, we had the possession and stats, but not the composure. Was a good game, and a good win for SA.

You showed some real killer instinct against Namibia, comfortably took Fiji, and again, won a hard fought game against a very tough Samoa side.

Looking at the injuries that some other teams have (particularly Oz), I'd say you'll comfortably get to the semis, and the AB game should be a cracker!

(lots of assumptions, I know, but even so).

Be fair,it was a bad tempered game from the start,to many handbags all through the match.Owens was very patient Habana excuted a beautiful trip,
deliberate Bok slapdown ignored,
To many cheapshots, offsides, monkey business at breakdowns surprised
both teams went up to half time without cards.
Pundits were drooling over the Boks at half-time,a brilliantly controlled scrum. When a Bok had his hand on the floor surely a penalty offence, penalty Boks?
There were so many offences going on 3 refs on the field could`nt sort it.
Williams incident ,Broussow was striking him several times before it,6 of one
half a dozen of the other.BOTH should have got Yellow,so often the player retaliting got binned.
Talk about a game of two halves,Bok scrum and lineout went to pieces,Two steals against Matfield.
When Samoa stopped moving about in the line out and picked there jumpers it improved immensly.
One moment Matfield makes a lineout steal,is then dumped on his arse and the ball stripped. That happened several times, showing no respect for the worlds Number one lineout technician.
Australia won there gimme, suffered another injury, followed by a dire second half.
England Scraped a win versus Scotland but were pretty poor,France dumped by Tonga.
All Blacks looking like casualty ward 10,a bonus point win for them and France go home.
Italy champing at the bit,and threatening to play some rugby,THAT could be the game of the weekend.
Pot simmering nicely what larks RWC`s they never go to the script.
