Post by Maverick Thu 20 Oct 2011, 10:52 pm

Ok so these days there is no such thing as post season in golfing terms, now that we have winter qualifiers! Still find that odd!

But winter is usually best time to buy new gear before we start getting overly serious again in February.

I was at the range with old man mav tonight and I wasn't feeling it (15consecutive shanks will do that for you) but we were there as he was trying out his new driver, he's forever tinkering, Started the year with an R9, changed to an MD Superstrong, 4 weeks ago bought a Yonex E-Zone before realising what over priced crap it was and now has settled on a Cobra ZL for a snip and my does it fly long. It was this that prompted this thread.

So what are you looking to change equipment wise thise winter or what do you simply fancy trying out.

As a note I see Cobra have launched the New ZL driver, a Ned driver called the "Long Tom" (sounds like a pornstars nickname for his man sausage) and the all new totally white S3 that Poulter uses.

Myself I'm looking at trying the new Adams MB irons(drooling at that thought hopefully without the shanks) and possibly may change the driver no reason to other than there's plenty out there I like the look of

The new Cobra ZL Encore drivers look lovely, but they're not that much different from the standard ZL other than the colourway. They certainly fly many many miles, and even sound nice, which is rare for a modern Cobra driver.

I've also seen that they're releasing a raw finish driver...not my cup of tea, but each to their own I suppose.

I can't say there's anything much I'm going to be buying in the off season (partially because my basement already has enough sticks to stock a pro shop, and partially because I'd probably end up divorced if I bought any more golf gear). I've recently bought a new driver, 3 wood, hybrid and putter, loads of Lindeberg stuff, and a few pairs of Adidas golf shoes.

If I do buy anything else, it will probably be a new set of waterproofs... either the Under Armour ArmourStorm range, or Mizuno Impermalite Geo.

It's a new set of sticks for meas most are well aware thanks to my much debated thread on here.

Really not sure what to go for at the moment but as of 23:00 on 20/10/11 the choice is currently between Mizuno MP59/Ping S56/Titleist AP2. Not really looked at Taylormade yet, R11's are supposed to be good but not eye candy.
Also want to get new wedges, I like low bounce so the MD range ticks the boxes. Got more putters than you can shake a (flat)stick at so nothing required there. Brought 6 doz Penta's back from the States last week so balls are covered as well.

Callaway & Titleist both have new versions of wedges coming out in the next couple of months. Personally, I'd scour the shops and websites for 2009 version wedges. I recently picked up some brand new Callaway X forged Vintage 2009 wedges in 52, 56, 58, 60 & 64 for £175 in total, all with lovely extra spinny grooves.

The R11 irons look nice, but they're not forged. At least they're not white though.

Still looking at making up a set of irons myself with some help from a club fitter mate of mine. Don't feel the need to change my driver, perfectly happy with what I have, although...........that cobra zl does sound good.

Putter as everyone knows with me is an ongoing issue, just trying out a much heavier putter that I've added lead to and at 32" is 3 " shorter than my £1 Scotty.

If I do buy anythingoff the shelf over winter, it is most likely tobe either a fairway wood that I can point in the right direction, or maybe I'll try to get into hybrids!

If your looking at wedges I can recommend the Admas Puglielli black series, low bounce options perfect for nipping off those tight lies and around the greens that's why I add 2 of those to my bag the 52 and 56 degree ones.

Have to say having seen oldmanMavs ZL fly tonight I may look at those and he got it for a snip at £150

My putter is not leaving my bag for the considerable future, got the Benross Doral Pure Red putter (the white one) yes not a grand name but my she is a thing of beauty, balanced to perfection, 1 inch short than standard and gives pure roll for the bargain price of 50 quid retail £65.

Good thread Mav,
In terms of equipment I'm very happy with what I have at present as I've had my most consistent season in terms of how often I've played well, however saying that, as equipment starts to get long in the tooth in comparison with other gear in my bag I'm beginning to think about a change of driver, not because I don't hit mine well, or even that I hit it often but just for a bit of a change and to compliment the aesthetics of the rest of the bats in my bag. I'm a firm believer in having clubs that look as well as perform. My Callaway FT-5 has never been an oil painting while the look of the new 2012 Cleveland Black Tour driver is beginning to tug at the old purse strings. Some testing required over winter I think
Like Mav, I'm also very impressed with some of the Adams stuff coming out, the drivers are supposed to perform very well, while the look of the MB's are orgasmic.

For my own good, I'm going to go on record as saying that I should stick to what I have for the time being, but I'm sure I will be tempted by all the bargains as the next generation equipment rolls out.

Wouldn't be surprised if anything white is marked down in the run up to Christmas, on the basis that extensive research has found that painting a red stripe down the side increases clubhead speed and makes the ball go even longer...

Seriously though, I've heard that Callaway are finally dipping into the adjustability era (not everyone's favourite brand I know), and will be interested to see the reviews on [what I understand will be called] the "RAZR-Fit" kit.

happy with everything in my bag, including Galvin Green waterproofs, which I added last winter. I do however have a gap to fill and my fitter is making me a Wishon 949 fairway metal (5-wood) it will be the only thing in my bag thats not KZG, except the putter.

Surely its not post season already ? Im just about to do a day working from home, or as I prefer to call it, a 4 day week, so was actually hoping to start playing some regular golf.
I might have a look at a few driving irons, quite fancy having one of those in the bag as the course I play at has 3 or 4 par 3's around the 200 yard mark.

have you paid a visit to the new John Letters shop in SA? Got some really nice gear in there and the fitter I spoke to really seems to know his stuff. He showed me a prototype of the new JL driver, quite a splendid looking beast if I say so myself thumbsup

a good option for low bounce wedges are also the cleveland cg15 dsg, the sole grind gives a narrow sole which should help the club get through the turf rather than dig in, while the face can be opened up laying the club on the sole grind part and thus decreasing the bounce. Been struggling with my wedge game for the last few seasons, always played vokey but just changed my irons driver and wedges, went for titleist irons again a cb/mb split at the 7 iron, decided to go for a change and went for the clevelands mentioned in 52 56 60, also the shaft in the wedges is the dynamic gold spinner shaft shaft which is designed to aid spin, steepens angle of attack, ball launches lower but with more zip.

You know what D4S, I never actually knew there was one, I tend to avoid the St.Andrews shops as it seems to be difficult to buy anything which isn't emblazoned with "Old Course St.Andrews" on it. Even some of the clubs are.

I think Mac would be like a pig in faeces there though.

just "recently" reopened, last couple of months I think. Good thing about it is it's purely just JL's own stuff, none of the branded tourist poo that all the other places are full of.

Owned by DirectGolf so in England you have to get them from one of their stores, have noticed the prices have gone up dramatically.

Had to laugh at one of the google adverts that's just appeared at the top of the page - advertising "golf knickers for men and women"!

Ok so it's American - we know what they mean by "knickers" in this context but still made me laugh!

I think I'll get me some of them golf knickers for christmas Wink

I am seriously looking at changing my Mizuno MP 37 irons for a new set of Mizuno MP 69 irons, it just the price that is holding me back(£600).

Would also like to get rid of the 3 iron and put a 2 and 3 iron hybrids into my bag, and as I am getting older, looking at the Gore Tex waterproof clothing, but they are not cheap.

Bloody expensive hobby this golf, without having to pay membership fees

JohnLetters really going for a big relaunch with the new kit and about time too. The new irons do look mightly lovely, I like the fact they are understated and a slight return to timeless classic looks. Problem is though having Sam Torrance as your poster boy isn't going to do the image a great service

Have you noticed that Mizuno have closed their NFC at Wrexham.
"All

As some of you have noticed the NFC's at Glasgow and Wrexham are now closed.

The new NFC at Burhill GC is open for business and will remain so.

Since Mizuno introduced the shaft optimizer and Swing DNA, the gap between the service offered at our NFC's and the privately run fitting centres has closed. We are now able to offer a very good, consistent iron fitting at a local level - that wasn't possible before Swing DNA. Hence the decision to invest the funds into supporting our network of fitting centres.

1. The UK will increase to 400 Swing DNA locations by spring 2012.
2. Mizuno UK are putting 2 full time field staff on the road for training and fitting days.
3. We have just launched new software that improves the fitting we offer at a local level.

In a nutshell, we can offer the fitting service to a lot more people across the UK with the changes. For most golfers the NFC's were out of range. So we have diverted our resources."

http://www.mizunoforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3636&sid=da94f296a696fc68f8b1c683e8b2cef8

I don't believe that having new software will make local staff into excellent club fitters.

Just bought myself a new Tourstage X-Drive 9.5*. Also I bought a 15* Bridgestone hybrid last week which has replaced my current 3 wood...I seem to hit the hybrid lower and alot more consistent than the old v steel.

If I had the cash lying around I would really like to change my srixon pro 100s for some Tourstage x blade 901s or Vega vm 02s.
