Tom Maynard
Reports all over the internet right now that Tom Maynard was killed in a car crash last night. I'm in shock. Hope that somehow this is a sick joke and not true.

Re: Tom Maynard
Terrible news. It is true, judging by those speaking of it now.
RIP Tom, a great talent and desperately sad for someone of such an age to go.

Carrot - I thought this was a sick internet joke when I first heard the news. Sadly, it is not although the cause of death appears different.
Utterly dreadful. Thoughts go to his friends and colleagues but especially his family.

Re: Tom Maynard
It's been confirmed he was hit by a district line train on Monday - don't know whether that was early hours or actually this morning. Not treated as suspicious by police so I don't know whether that points to suicide or not?
At the moment I'm just in pure shock and really can't get my head around this news. Such a tragedy regardless of how talented he was, he was 23, his whole career and life ahead of him.
RIP Tom

Incredibly talented player and so sad to hear. Definitely pales usual frustration as a spectater into significance.

Utterly shocked by the news that once again English cricket has lost one of its brightest young talents in tragic circumstances. Condolences to his father Matt, and the rest of his family. RIP.

A fuller picture of the terrible circumstances surrounding his death are described in this article - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/article-2161009/Tom-Maynard-dies.html
It sounds as if he was trying to get away from police.

Re: Tom Maynard
Talk now is that he wasn't hit by a train, but electrocuted by the rails.
Presumably he tried to cross the tracks whilst running from police.
Either way, horrific news.

Sounds likely, given the timings. Tube trains don't start running 'til around 5. If he started running from police at 4.15 it is likely he would have crossed the track before 5. Doesn't make a jot of difference to how horrendous this news is.

Geez, when I saw the title of the article I thought it was the start of a debate on Tom's chances of an England career.

Completely agree, either is a horrible way to go .
1st train into town through Wimbledon Park is 4.56am, the second one is 5.14am, 1st train out to Wimbledon goes through at 5.23am

Debate as to whether he was electrocuted, then hit by a passing train, or vice versa.
Details don't really matter, I guess.

Don't know what to say. Sounded like a lovely guy. Played some great cricket for Glammy and Surrey and I'm grateful to have seen part of a promising career and life cut horribly short. RIP Tom, devastated to say the least. Sympathies go out to the Maynard family who I can't imagine the pain and grief they are going through.

All too common - I'd opted to get the District line from Ealing due to signal failure delays on the Central this morning, and at the time I felt some relief that it wasn't on my route -

Terrible news for the Maynard family and friends.
In the last week or so there was some indication that he was having some kind of difficulties - but to come to this end is tragic.

Re: Tom Maynard
It looks like another death associated with drink driving but this time his own.
Obviously if he had been caught I guess that could have jeopardised his cricketing career? Then again he could have jeopardised the lives of other road uses and pedestrians. It is probably best not to speculate until the full story comes out but I would be interested in knowing what a drink-driving conviction would have done to his cricketing career - if anyone knows? Perhaps that would have been the main reason why he ran off ...

Swann and his cat seems to have been a marginal decision "... sample had 83mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, which is over the legal limit of 80mg."

Re: Tom Maynard
I suspect that, given he had only recently been disciplined for drinking during a game, he would have been given some sort of ban by the club had he been convicted of drink-driving. Having said that it was probably only because he was drunk that he ran away - as he would have been caught up with eventually and, had tragedy not struck, the consequences of trying to evade police may well have been a prison sentence.

Re: Tom Maynard
It seems to be one big drunken mistake and Tom paid the ultimate price but to be perfectly honest I don't care what happened or how. We have lost a massively talented cricketer and, from reports all round, a lovely man. That is all that matters.

Re: Tom Maynard
Well it does seem to have been avoidable and maybe cricket clubs etc can learn something from this and act to prevent young cricketers getting into this type of position again. I had at first thought this might be another depression type situation that affects certain sportstars and I know there is an associated educational awareness and support campaign for them.

Re: Tom Maynard
Kind of true, mobilemaster, but it makes it no less sad, and it's not like he was your usual run of the mill hooligan, either.
Re: Tom Maynard
However, this is a thread to pay respects to not just Tom as a person but as a cricketer that many of us here have enjoyed watching across the last few years, particularly the healthy batch of Surrey supporters that frequent this forum.
Whilst I understand your comment, I'd ask that this doesn't descend in to a debate over whether Tom deserves our sympathy or not. He was a talented cricketer, and by all accounts a very nice man. That is what matters most. The purpose of this thread is to recognise that.

True, Fists. I do agree that its a sad day for Cricket Fans and sport in general.
But what i can not overlook, is Tim Maccoll. Nobody here has heard of him no doubt.
He is in the Royal Navy, 27 years old, wife and 2 kids, one on the way. He was out o tour in the Middle East last week, and he has gone missing. Last sighting was him in Dubai.
No media coverage, no sad articles etc etc
Joke really
