Handshakes. What to do?
My personal opinion is that they're grown men, and professionals, and that shaking somebody's hand isn't a big ask.
Now I can see in special circumstances it can be skipped, (a la John Terry and Wayne Bridge), but Anton refusing to shake Ashley's hand seems a bit OTT.

What happened with Anton and Ashley? i missed that bit. They should just do what Bridge and JT did and just not shake each others hand and stay away from each other. Although if Torres said a racial slur to Anton then it would be more difficult to keep them away from each other.

Ashley testified in court saying the trial never should've happened.

I see, well i think Antons being a bit too sensitive about that. There are probably lots of people who said the trial shouldnt have happened.

I'm one of them. It should've stayed with the FA, not a public farce in court.

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
They should just scrap the handshake anyway, it serves no purpose. Fake shows of respect are pointless.

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
Not all handshakes are fake shows of respect. Just because on the football field they kick lumps out of each other, dont mean they dont respect each other.
I personally think Ferdinand should just move on and shake his hand. I can sort of understand why not Terry, but not shaking Cole's is just attention seeking.
BTW this is not helped at all by the media frenzy

Not shaking Cole's is a side effect of Rio showcasing for the 556th time just how little common sense he possesses.

Of course. Ferdinand should forgive the man who called him an effing black count.
As for Confectionery Cole, the less said about him the better. Credit to Anton for ignoring that confectionery.

They should scrap this shaking hands nonsense and why do grown men have to walk out onto the pitch holding the hand of a child?

Personally, i think the pre match handshakes are completely unneccessary.................i agree they should be stopped.............if opposing players want to greet each other on the pitch before a game, friends, ex teammates etc then let them go and greet each other during the warm up................we are going to have another "event" at Anfield next week..................

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
Olly, I know some footballers do respect each other, but being forced to shake each other's hands doesn't show that respect as they've been told to.
It just gives the opportunity for anger to rise because of the refusal to shake somebody's hand is a lot more disrespectful than it is respectful to shake their hand. The game where Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand shows this, as Evra then went mental in the first couple of minutes, taking out Rio Ferdinand in a mad attempt to take out Suarez.

I don't mind the mascots, not sure why they have to hold their hand, but think the mascots are a good thing as it's for the benefit of the child rather than the players.
The handshake however doesn't benefit anybody.

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
Park should have shook his hand though, that was just silly, and not shaking cole's hand was also stupid. I dont mind not shaking terry's hand, i mean who likes Terry. I wonder if Rio will shake Terry's hand and if Cole will shake Rio's hand. See its all just ridiculous now. And then you have Suarez, Evra and Rio again and lets not forget another vital part of the story Wayne Bridge and Terry, they might not meet each other but again they wont shake hands.

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
P personally don't like the pre-match handshake, never have and never will, its pointless and meaningless
I also don't see why they feel the need to have every player walk out hand in hand with their own individual mascots
The only people who should be shaking hands pre game is the two captains and the referee at the coin toss
After the game when players have earned each others respect should the handshakes take place, everything else is all just manufactured nonsense

What's with all the hate of the mascots? It's a great experience for these little kids to walk out on the pitch with a player!

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
They made a good point on MOTD last night, bin the pre-match handshake and then obviously at the end if there is someone who's crossed you or you don't like, just don't go near them. Simples.
It's the same with Sunday league football, if someone said something unsavoury to me during the game, I wouldn't shake his hand at the end of the game.
Sometimes a good dose of common sense is needed, in a sport where it's fundamentally lacking.

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
The handshake shouldnt be taken away, its the last etiquette of the game, at least shake the mans hand before you kick lumps out of him. (if the situation calls for it). the 'shake' has been there for all time. that part of the history of the game shouldnt be forgotten or stopped. (moore & pele come to mind.)

I don't think the whole team handshake has always been a part of the Premier League...

I don't have a huge problem with the handshake but i think these feuds will only get worse and there will be more and more 'burns' in the future. Solution, just end it.

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
I dont blame Anton as much for not shaking Terry's hand but not shaking Coles hand was stupid, and then Park doing likwise was even more bizarre. It was like when Tevez tried to start on JT after the Wayne Bridge snuff of John Terry.
I'm not in favour of racism but i remember reading that Anton felt hurt by the comments made by JT. I'm sure he has had more hurtfull stuff said to him, maybe not racist, but surely worse. And if it is the worst thing ever said to him, just use it on the field, i mean, Premier league footballers have to have thick skin. Again i wish racism to be extinuished from football and im not advocating it.

Vile insults were traded both ways in last years game.............for Ferdinand to keep this going is stupid. After all, Ferdinand never heard the words himself so cant judge for himself if it was said as a question or as an insult..............the magistrate court found him "not guilty"............time for AF to move on..............
Parks actions were stupid.....................

Re: Handshakes. What to do?
AF took a principled stand. Credit to him for that.
Picture this scenario. A guy who you know assaulted your sister was found not guilty in a court of law. Would you shake his hand if asked and move on?
Whatever many of you may think about name calling, racial insults are felt deeply by the recipient and not easily brushed aside. Unless you want to go back to the 1970s where black footballers had to get on with it regardless.
As for Park, my opinion of him has gone sky high. Great man and wonderful example of captaincy. A credit to the Korean Peninsula. Terry should be ostracised for being a C.

Why did park snub terry?
Banish pre-match handshakes and let them play Football. if they want to shake at the end of the game then, it's up to them.

He has nothing to with the situation. Yes he's the captain but he should be bigger than that.
Anton's reasons are his own and the other players should abstain from them.

Someone said (my paraphrase as I dont recall the exact quote "For tyranny to continue, good men remain quiet".
Park was standing by his colleague who was grotesquely insulted. He took a principled stand in support of AF. Credit to him for standing by his principles. More people should be like him in order to erradicate racism from society.

So, are you saying Terry should be blanked from making a heat of the moment mistake?
Grow up and move on. I dislike Terry but it should be over, at least for us who are not directly involved.

Azania,
Perhaps all that's left for you to do at this stage is to complain directly to the Magistrates Court?
You are making dangerous allegations here that have already been ruled on by a Court of Law. You should be more careful about what you are saying here IMO.

So there must be what nearly a thousand handshakes pre match per season, yet because of two/three people not doing it, we should get rid of it?

If any of that was actually correct then you'd be right
The "shake" may always have been there, but pre-match? Absolutely not, it was manufactured by the whole 'fair play' sycophants that run the game

What allegations am I making and how are they dangerous?
Terry has not denied what was said. Just the context in which the words were said. AF doesn't believe the context in which Terry claimed. Frankly I believe him. Terry has previous and has knowingly lied to his missus before.
AF is well within his rights to refuse the offer of a handshake from Terry because he believed (my emphasis) Terry was being less than truthful. As for Confectionary Cole, the less said about him the better.
Well done Park for standing up to what is right also. The man deserved credit for his stance.

So not being a WUM would be to agree with something I dont agree with? If someone you knew got off for assaulting your sister (God forbid it never happens), would you shake his hand if asked and "move on"?
