Riddick Bowe What Are you Doing???

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Riddick Bowe’s Muay Thai debut ended in an agonising and embarrassing second round KO defeat.
Bowe, 45, was defeated on Friday by 30-year-old Russian Levgen Golovkin.
‘Big Daddy’ suffered a torrent of abuse to his shins as Golovkin hammered him with low kicks, causing the American to fall five times in the bout’s short duration.
The fifth and final fall caused his loss via technical knockout.
Bowe, who beat Evander Holyfield in 1992 to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, ended his combat sports retirement because he was reportedly bored and needed the cash.
And despite the woeful introduction to the world of Thai kickboxing, the cash was certainly there: Bowe made $150,000 (£92,520) from the defeat.
Bowe infamously dropped the WBC belt into a garbage can during a live press conference to underscore his intentions not to defend against Britain’s Lennox Lewis, who would eventually climb to the top of the mountain years later.

Surely there's easier & less painful ways to make money, but that's a nice wage for a few minutes work in anyone's book!

Remember he joined the army, lasted a week, there was a funny skit article on it but I can't find it.

Never heard he was short of money.

Bowe did turn Lewis down for a huge payday in Holyfield 2 .................Often these articles tend to overlook that fact..

Bowe needs money I'm afraid........So it's a bit silly asking him what he's doing.......

He's doing the same things Carnera, Berbick and the like did.....

and it's very sad..

As for after dinner speaking.........Have you heard the guy speak?? and he's never been very interesting....

Yeah - rags to riches, and back to rags again by the sounds of it.

Holyfield, Bowe, Tyson, all short of money while Lennox, the one fighter who consistently kept his distance from Don King, is set for life.

Heavyweight boxing might lack the excitement that it did in the 1990s, but at least the fighters are keeping a decent slice of their earnings.

After dinner is probably a concept Bowe doesn't quite understand..

Holyfield and Tyson both got $20 million purses back in the day......So you can't blame King for their lack of money..they did make millions.....

Difference between them and Bowe is they can still make appearances and get money....because they were from a better era (mainly thanks to Tyson, Hagler, leonard etc)..and fought eachother twice..

Bowe hasn't that appeal.

Holyfield has more kids than China and india combined - otherwise he'd still be rich.

Fair point Truss, but it's also fair to say that regardless of what happened in the ring, Don was always the biggest winner when it came to heavyweight boxing.

Bowe's peak just wasn't as long as that of the other guys, which is a shame as I'd have given him a decent shot against a post-prison version of Tyson. Seemed to decline quite rapidly after the Holyfield trilogy...

Bowe reminded me of Matthew Hilton...another with the World at his feet........

From what I remember, Don King can't be blamed in any way for Bowe ending up broke, Bowe was handled by Rock Newman. 

However, it's OK to say fighters earned millions fighting for King, but how much of it did they get to keep? I've heard Tyson say that he never saw all the millions he's reputed to have earned and Witherspoon has said similar.

Larry Holmes did alright..

Holmes got 4 million from king to fight Tyson. And Holmes always prides himself on not being some dumb pug.

I'm sure that I've read that Holmes still got ripped of by King during their relationship. What probably helped Holmes make some money is that he wasn't managed by Carl King.

Carl King managed Witherspoon, I think Page, and probably a few others. How's a fighter going to earn money when your manager is supposed to go to the promoter to negotiate your purse, but the manager is the promoters son?

I wish boxers wouldn't do this to be honest as they end up hopelessly under-achieving most of the time. Kickboxing is not the same as boxing, and generally better boxers come from the kickboxing ranks than the other way round. Bowe may have picked up $150k but he was hurt like never before. I doubt he'll do it again.

Just a thought, what's Rock Newman up to these days? Retired & rich I guess?? I always thought of him as a nasty little money-grabbing weasel and seem to remember he had a penchant for white suits. Classy guy!
