Fast bowler George Edwards is named in a Championship squad for the first time this season and the Pemberton Greenish Academy batsman Dominic Sibley is also included.

7 overs to bowl tonight and no sign of Tremlett on the field!?! Injured facing 2 balls at the crease and walking back to the pavilion??

To be fair Jimbob he was doing fine in the partnership with Batty and then the last few wickets went down in a flash.

Yep, our nine, ten and jack between them faced 4 balls and scored precisely nil runs.Corporalhumblebucket wrote:To be fair Jimbob he was doing fine in the partnership with Batty and then the last few wickets went down in a flash.
We're clearly still in a better position than Derbys but it should be much more. We really fouled up the last hour. Not getting a wicket at the end was a bit disappointing too. What on earth was going on with Tremlett not appearing until about 3 overs had been bowled, meaning he couldn't bowl tonight??
Anyway, fine knock earlier from Solanki by all accounts. Double anyone else's score - so far ....

At the ground. The general conditions seem good for batting. Sunny with not a cloud in sight. Pitch behaving itself so far.
Linley right on the money and now into his sixth over of the morning. Deserved Slater's wicket (awful mess of a shot, probably borne out of frustration) and has already troubled new man Madsen.
Tremlett replaced after just 4 overs by Edwards.

Derbys grinding things out. 64-1 off 32. Spin on at both ends with Batty and Ansari, the latter giving it some flight.

Lunch. 80-1. Effectively, 10-1 in what now becomes a one innings match.
Derbys - and Borrington in particular - resolute. We've bowled fairly well without ever looking particularly penetrative.
Linley - the best of the bowlers, expect him to start again after lunch.

Particularly for the Corporal - just heard someone putting on a Private Frazer of Dads Army voice and booming out: "We're doomed! Doomed I tell you!"

Tremendous first over after lunch from Linley. Two unsuccessful lbw appeals, two play and misses and then the fifth cuts back in and bowls Borrington.

Chandepaul lbw to Batty. A very important wicket. Chandepaul was looking good and seeming to have more time than any of the other batsmen.
Meanwhile, Madsen continuing to scrap and appears on the verge of a hard earned 50.

The Brain has just bowled his second unthreatening over. Meanwhile, Tremlett hasn't bowled since this morning!
141-3 as tea approaches, a lead of 71. An intriguing match being hard fought ...by two Division Two teams.

3 quick wickets after tea. Two for the now on fire Tremlett and the other for the perpetually calm Ansari.
Derbys 167-6, a lead of 97. New ball due in 2 overs. Probably not going to take it too soon.

161 lead at stumps letting them off the hook after having them at 113 for 7 we must get these last 3 wkts quickly tomorrow morning anything over 200 will be very tricky the way we are batting at the moment

Spot on.jimbobgooner wrote:161 lead at stumps letting them off the hook after having them at 113 for 7 we must get these last 3 wkts quickly tomorrow morning anything over 200 will be very tricky the way we are batting at the moment
Mind you, a lead of 161 might already be too much if we bat like the loons we've been at times this season.
Fascinating day. Not many runs, not many wickets but so tense and enthralling. Derbys never got properly ahead but they kept battling away and remained resolute from start to finish through, in particular, Borrington, Madsen and Poynton.
Linley was the pick of the bowlers and probably should have had 3 or 4 more overs. He was devastating immediately after lunch. The others plugged away and were generally tight but not too often penetrative. Good to see Ansari get some tidy overs under his belt although I felt 25 was a bit too much. Edwards couldn't repeat his success of the first day and lost direction in his second spell. Batty did what Batty does and collected a couple of wickets. Tremlett bowled four shortish spells and was on fire in the third immediately after tea but seemed stiff and off line when he returned late in the day.
Fielding was pretty good. Harinath particularly caught the eye with some fine stops, both close in and around the boundary. Also liked hired hand Amla regularly showing commitment to the cause. Good sharp catch low down at slip from the Brain as well to dismiss Burgoyne off Batty.
Still all to play for tomorrow and, in contrast to cricinfo, I make us narrow favourites - just one good partnership should edge us over the line provided we get the remaining Derbys wickets fairly quickly. However, I can't help thinking that whatever the result both sides will be playing each other next season in Division Two.

Bit of a tough schedule for Surrey with just one days off before the big one on Tuesday. Wonder whose advantage that will be to?

Echoing numerous previous posts, I have concerns about Tremlett playing 8 days of Championship cricket in 9 days. Perhaps significantly, Meaker was at the Oval yesterday and doing 13th man duties.Shelsey93 wrote:Bit of a tough schedule for Surrey with just one days off before the big one on Tuesday. I'm hoping to see Tom Curran... but doubt they would play both him and George Edwards in the same XI.

Derbys have been playing up catch up since the start of this match. They are now ahead and it will be mighty difficult for us to regain the lead. A lot resting on Amla and Solanki ....

After the double failure in this match from Arun Harinath, you might though see Dom Sibley against Middlesex.Shelsey93 wrote:I'm hoping to see Tom Curran... but doubt they would play both him and George Edwards in the same XI.

Agree that Harinath has certainly lost form and confidence and he is likely to be dropped in favour of Sibley,

Re: Surrey vs Derbyshire lv county championship
This afternoon will define our season. If we don't chase down 217 and win a game we dominated for the first 2 days and 2 sessions, I feel we will be too far behind statistically and psychologically to stay up. Nor will we deserve to. If, however, we can do it, then we might just turn the corner and save our Div 1 status.
I remain baffled by our club's recruitment policies. Lewis and Keedy were unnecessary, irrational acquisitions. We already had both experience and up-and-coming cover in their fast and slow bowling roles. Our aching need is for reliable batsmen. I still think Solanki was a good short to good medium import.
Finally, to those who say Surrey need to develop their own players, have a little look where Carberry, Hamilton-Brown, Rikki Clarke and Jordan learned their craft before deciding they needed a new start elsewhere. Let us hope that, with help from past greats - eg Stewart, Thorpe and M Bicknell, the longer term outlook is rosy and that we will before long once again start providing significant homegrown talent for England to draw on.
PS: now 36-2 as i write: dare we hope?...

Actually think we're going to get over the line. 124 needed from here. If Amla and the Brain can get the target down to double figures, Derbys are also going to be very anxious. On paper at least, our middle order looks fairly reasonable whilst their bowling shouldn't be pulling up trees ....

Tea, 114-3. We need 103 in the final session. Surely we can do that?!? Very big ask for Derbys to take 7 wickets in a session.
Based on the comments earlier from George Jepson of Radio Derbys, believe there are 33 overs left - meaning we'll get 73 in this innings, anyone know if that's right?
Drinks tonight in the mess, eh Corporal? Just hope it's a celebration and not a wake!

146-4. The Brain gone for 31. Derbys desperately needed that or any wicket. We remain on top but won't be if another wicket goes quickly. 71 to win ... or 6 wickets!
