Have a look at the first Yvon Durelle v Archie Moore fight, ONETWO.

Archie was decked three times in the opening round but went on to stop Durelle in eleven.

Khan v Maidana certainly wasn't expected to be half decent (defo wasn't my FOTY though as the writers saw it)

Pretty sure Castillo v Corrales didn't have a FOTY contender build up either, but that was yonks ago and the memory's not what it was

GMan v Benn? Expected to be a brutal one sided blow out... Save for the tragic end it'd have been up there for FOTY status

Recently Vic Darchinyan fought some random journeyman called Guerrero (not that one), probably the best tune-up fight i've ever seen as the other guy just kept walking through everything Vic through... well i say walk through he kept returning fire under hellacious assaults. Was a lop-sided decision but the other lad made it a helluva lot of fun to watch... Quick recap here - pretty much how most of the fight went to be honest! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYUPnp2-riI

Fidel Bassa-Dave McAuley I. Meant to be a routine defence against a lanky Irishman who hadn't fought all that often and was supposed to be a bit chinny. Instead became the fight of the year, practically the fight of the decade and when I sit down and think about it, a fight that's definitely in my top 10 ever. On some days, it's in my top 5. I remember that the commentary was done by Carpenter and Bomber Graham, who could barely keep the amusement, and then the amazement, out of his voice as this extraordinary fight unfolded.

A very, very recent one but Ortiz was expected to be hit by Berto and then quit....

Instead we got 4 knockdowns, would've been FOTY if Berto hadn't cuddled as much...

Gotta love a bit of Manny Steward

On that subject you could have Ortiz and Maidana, and if you have that you can throw in Khan versus Prescott.

Fair shout on Ortiz v Maidana......

Not quuuuuuite sure how Khan vs Prescott is a classic bearing in minded it last less than a minute............................................. Bit like saying you're the greatest shag on the planet but you only go for 55 seconds Wink

I would say Carl Froch vs Jean Pascal. Far better fight than we had any right to expect it to be.

Three fights for me always stick out in terms of the domestic scene (which in itself always makes it a wee bit more unlikely to be a classic as the fighters involved, very often, aren't in the highest class). Clinton McKenzie versus Colin Power (both fights), Des Morrison against Joe Tetteh and Tom Collins versus John Moody.

One unheralded fight which I really enjoy watching back involved a fighter who I'm really interested in, but get's little written about these days - Peruvian Light-Heavyweight, Mauro Mina. A cracking fighter who could have been an outstanding champion at 175 lb, but the title evaded him for a few reasons. Anyway, his scrap with Henry Hank was a brilliant one, shades of Robinson-Basilio with the clash of styles, ebb and flow and the sheer intensity. The fight is available online and I'd urge anyone who's yet to see it to check it out.

I remember watching that Darchinyan fight totally amazed at how on earth Guerrero was standing up, he didn't even look like he was in too much trouble if I remember correctly.

John LoCicero v Will "Caveman" Lee

I expect you've seen it but when it comes to classic fights from unheralded fighters this has got to deserve a mention...

Was a belter of a fight, but don't think anyone had it down as a onsided boxing lesson, mainly down to frochs style.

I think I'm right in saying Gatti vs Ward was a fight to get Gatti back into title contention after his loss to De La Hoya. Think Gatti was heavy favourite at the time.
