Bit of a quiz Empty Bit of a quiz

Post by Hoggy_Bear Sat 30 Nov 2013, 9:29 pm

Can you name the all-time XI for each test nation according to who has scored the most runs in each batting position? (where a player has scored the most in more than one batting position, the first of those is counted, and the player in second place in subsequent positions goes in the team instead).
There are a few obvious ones, especially among the batsmen and, of course, there is a bias toward more modern players because they play more matches. Still it's quite interesting (at least I think so, but maybe I'm a bit of an anorak). Anyway, shall we start with England 1-11? (No cricinfo unless you absolutely have to).

That... and the fact he's a "once in a generation" talent....

Can't believe I got #7 wrong though... Woulda thought Prior was a certainty.

Possibly helped by Raf's paper having a lot of crosses, my guesses -

1. Boycott
2. Gooch - he got a shedload of runs although possibly (for this flaming quiz!) too many were in the middle order
3. Cowdrey
4. Pietersen - would have been tempted to say Gower before seeing Raf's correct answer
5. Dexter - no idea really for 5
6. Botham
7. Knott - as not Prior
8. Giles
9. Old
10. Snow
11. Underwood

Suprised Cook's not there, although maybe his runs are split between 1 and 2?

Alec Stewart another one who probably moved up and down the order a bit too much to make a run at any one position. Perhaps a shout for number 5 or 6 though?

My mistake. Actually Cook is no.2. Gooch No.1
You are correct that Knott is no.7 (England's recent penchant for nightwatchmen means that Prior has batted at 8 quite a bit)
Non of the rest are right though, I'm afraid.

#11 needs a specialist #11 I would think as can't remember any grand last wicket stands. Perhaps Willis?

So: Are we saying:

#1: Gooch
#2: Cook
#4: The S.African.
#7: Knott
??

Let's go with
#3: Hammond
#5: Graveney
#6: Bailey
#8: Titmus
#9: Broad
#10: Higgs
#11: Willis

Hammond at 3 is correct kwini, as is Willis at 11. Broad is there but one place higher than you have him.
So, so far, we have
1. Gooch
2.Cook
3.Hammond
4.KP
5.-
6.-
7.Knott
8,Broad
9.-
10.-
11.Willis

For number 6, don't tell me it's Tony Greig - he must have scored some runs to average over 40 as I keep being told on the HoF thread!! Really thought it would be Both with the number of years he played and, I thought, regularly at 6.

Rats ! Curse of the time zones...you lot have swept up all the easy ones before I even read this...

Surely Barrington at 5 ?

Bell at 6 ?

Nine is tricky ...could it be Swann ?

Going to say Underwood for 10.

If not Barrington then maybe Thorpe at 5? Although he moved from 4-6 a fair bit, I think he got most of his runs at 5.

Bell could well be at 6. He's undoubtedly got a few thousand runs there, and given England's inclination to play all-rounders at either 6 or 7 without always much success...

No idea about 9 or 10. Swann at 9 from alfie seems like a good shout.

@Mike Selig. Thorpe is correct at no. 5
@ Linebreaker. Pretty good, but no.10 is incorrect as far as I can see.

Oh yeah, Craig McDermott has scored a few more runs batting at 10 than DK Lillee.

Fantastic team... over 46,000 combined runs there.

So Freddie Trueman is the missing piece. Hadn't thought of him being number ten so often. Actually surprised one of the more recent players hadn't gone past him given they play so many more matches , but I guess all these tailenders move around a bit in the order.

Kumble at 10 for India ? Martin Crowe, presumably, is in the NZ line-up, with Habibul Basher in for Bangladesh somewhere and Tamim at one.

South Africa suspects must be Smith, Kallis, Boucher at seven or eight and what about Sean Pollock in there as well.

Pakistan - Is Hanif at one or would it be Mudassar or Mohsin Khan ? Javed Miandad at three? Younis Khan at four?

SL - Sangakkara at three and Jayawardene at four.

Also, is there a COMBINED list of just the top 11 from ALL countries ?

Did cronje score runs at 6? he only averaged 36... What about Prince? I was a tad nervous about listing Smith, he is our greatest opener, but he generally alternates first guard with his partner... so I don't know... he might even be #1 & #2...

Well, he scored a few, and batted mostly at six, so I reckon he's close to be their leading scorer at six. Prince and Duminy haven't played that much, have they?
